“PLS&TY – Yours (ft. Tudor)”

Florida native PLS&TY brings another track from his upcoming EP, 3 Days, 2 Nights, this time bringing a club-oriented “night side” track. The infectious rhythm envelops the room, urging bodies to move in sync with its magnetic pull with Welsh singer/songwriter Tudor in tow. This track admires earlier tracks from the EP, “Party In My Head” feat. Lost Boy, which is currently Top 30 charting at Dance Radio, as well as “New Color,” serving as the darker sibling to their “day side” vibes. Amidst the electrifying beats, the lyrics weave a narrative of liberation, embracing the freedom to be unapologetically oneself. As the beat picks up midway through the song PLS&TY says, “when the night comes down” encapsulating the “night club” anthem. As the neon lights illuminate the crowded dance floor, this song takes center stage, merging pulsating basslines with progressive lyrics. The progressive nature of the song transcends mere[...]

SURVIVE – RR7349

The second half of 2016 has been a very good to Austin, Texas electronic band SURVIVE. The preposterous viral success of Stranger Things on Netflix this summer catapulted the largely unknown band into the public’s imagination thanks to adoring articles from Pitchfork, NME, and AV Club, a hot two volume soundtrack album from band members Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, the show’s obsessive fans, and the band is making the most of it with a national tour and a well timed sophomore album, RR7349. But could it live up to the expectations that come from sudden increases in attention, and could it exist separately from Stranger Things? The answer on both counts is definitely. SURVIVE as a full band trades emotive minimalism for glacial synths and pulsating, widescreen vistas that occupy an entirely different sonic space. The layered sounds of RR7349 conjure 80’s futurism, bleak coldness and human struggle, to create subdued but epic soundtracks for movies[...]

Charles Bordeaux Releases Free Of.. EP

Buffalo producer/songwriter Charles Bordeaux, formerly known as REverb Rock, recently released a soulful four track EP titled Free Of.., which includes instrumental melodic synth jams as well as downtempo experimental pop with frenetic percussion and emotive vocals. The artist’s abstract style is notably compelling on tracks like “Temple” and “Youth”, where lush arrangements accompany the singer’s introspective lyrics along with immersive vocal samples. The casual instrumental jam “Wax & Wane” centers around an infectious synth progression, paired with static drums and a strong bass groove to make for a jazzy, contemplative feel. Faire Écho – Child of Rage

Before the break, I mentioned that going into the new year buffaBLOG would be keeping you up to date on every new and exciting voice in local music. So it’s after eagerly waiting 30 long days that I can finally share with you one of those voices; Faire Écho. Faire Écho is the electronic brainchild of Buffalo native and former Sleepy Haha’s bassist, Derek Sullivan. Now residing in Neu-Ulm, Germany; Sullivan has taken to producing music full-time and the first results are nothing short of breathtaking. Child of Rage is the name of his forthcoming work, a loose concept album based around the destructive power of childhood pain and fear. The album follows a haunting series of vocal samples that thematically ties the work together using what sounds like childhood therapy sessions and chilling eyewitness accounts. While the album itself is still awaiting a release, Sullivan has released a collection[...]

Peach releases new album The Fall of Rome

Buffalo production duo 桃 [peach] with only a pair of bandcamp releases to their name are responsible for one of the more unique sounds to come out of the local electronic scene. With their latest album The Fall of Rome, the artists explore sounds rooted in vaporwave, house, and electronica while adhering to the ancient Roman theme with track titles like “Julius Caesar,” “The Ides of March,” and “Fall of the Republic.” Opening with the downtempo, glitchy “Ode to a New Age,” Peach complements fiery drums with lush chords and dark atmospherics while the more house-oriented “Julius Caesar” brings to mind the work of Toronto duo Crystal Castles with its abrasive textures and frenetic synth leads. Their eclectic production skills lend themselves to more groove-based, mellow tracks as well with “Welcome to Rome” and “Crossing the Rubicon” providing a more subdued tone while maintaining the experimental, scatter-brained approach that characterizes Peach’s sound. Perhaps[...]

Fourem Releases New Single, “Newspaper Cape”

From the cosmic harp motif that sets off his latest track, “Newspaper Cape,” Buffalo producer Fourem makes his inclinations toward a deeper, pensive sound apparent. Bringing to mind artists like Flying Lotus and Bonobo, the musician born Chris Groves (Applennium) creates an atmospheric build before letting a relaxed groove carry the majority of the track. Merging elements of funk, hip hop, and electronica, Fourem brings in glitchy, experimental sounds among the soulful percussion and bass line to make for an immersive cut that introduces just enough ideas to stay engaging while avoiding becoming overstimulating. With an ability to work with a wide array of compelling sounds, Groves is the kind of artist that can consistently defy listener’s expectations. Listen/download “Newspaper Cape” below. Darksleep – Obviate

The imaginative soundscapes of Buffalo producer Darksleep have been among the most otherworldly to emerge from the local underground electronic scene over the past year. With the release of his debut album, 電効営み, the artist caught our attention with a vivid, experimental style reminiscent of avant-garde synth virtuoso Oneohtrix Point Never and Venezuelan producer/Bjork collaborator Arca. This sound-art approach to making tracks is conveyed clearly from a glance at the abstract artwork for the latest release from the enigmatic producer, Obviate.  From the onset of the album’s lead track, “Precursor,” with it’s glitchy vocals and washes of digital chaos, Darksleep creates an unsettling, yet mesmerizing atmosphere complete with playful arpeggiating synth tones and eerie droning textures. As a listener, the effect can be imagined as being transported into alternate universe where what follows is an eloquent glimpse at a wildly conceptual world of sonic visions. On “Spectre,” another unearthly loop begins the[...]

Space Cubs – The Fire And Things Forgotten

The Fire And Things Forgotten, the celestial debut full-length from Buffalo born electronic musician Suzanne Bonifacio (who records as Space Cubs), is the result of what the artist refers to as a “journey of creative reflection and change” that included a move to Chicago before settling in Charlotte, North Carolina. Drawing comparisons to experimental pop artists like Bjork, Grimes, and Jessy Lanza, Bonifacio’s strength as a songwriter lies in her ability to forge melodic, blissful sounds from underneath an uneasy, murky veil of reverb and restless percussion. Mostly recorded during a period where the artist found herself living in the middle of Pisgah National Forest, the album successfully conjures the remote, ruminative circumstances of its creation, as is apparent from the atmospheric opening cut, “Back Lies,” with its siren-like vocals and inviting melodic elements. The following track and lead single, “The Eye,” is perhaps the strongest display of Bonifacio’s classically trained vocal[...]

Mario Bee and Mike Gerbino Announce Point of No Concern EP

Two former Rochester-based artists, DJ Mario Bee and rapper Mike Gerbino, are set to release their debut collaborative EP, Point of No Concern on April 20th. Featuring an assortment of hip-hop, electronic, and grime beats, the five-track record abrasively touches on subjects like the middle-east, prostitution, global warming, and Facebook. Well known for his work on HBO’s Brave New Voices poetry special, Gerbino is an accomplished spoken work artist in addition to his hip hop endeavors, while Mario Bee began his career DJing and producing in both Rochester and Buffalo before moving to New York City where he now gigs frequently throughout the city and the East Coast. The pair are also having a release party for the EP this Saturday at Leftfield Bar in New York if you find yourself in the area Check out the project’s first single, “Eliot Spizter,” below.

Fort Romeau – Insides

Since the release of his 2012 debut album Kingdoms, London producer Fort Romeau has continued to develop a highly textured, slow-burning house sound that lends itself to both economical dance cuts as well as airy, warm introspective tracks. After putting out a series of EP’s for Ghostly International that saw the artist explore sounds outside of the house realm like ambient, italo disco and Kraftwerk-style synth pop, his latest full-length Insides furthers this sonic shift into darker, more direct territory. With typically lush synth work and crisp percussion once again present, it’s the producer’s restraint of the use of vocal samples that draws more attention to the rich instrumentation and experimental sounds like on the sprawling title track whose minimal arrangement creates space for each element to be individually appreciated while maintaining an engaging song structure. Coming from an artist who released a statement about the importance of “slow listening,” there isn’t[...]

Transfer in Jamaica Releases Speculative Dance Party Vol. 2

Known for eclectic, scatter-brained mixes and mashups, Buffalo artist, Transfer in Jamaica, brings together disparate tracks, shifting tempos and vocal pitches as well as placing club music side by side with more introspective genres like post-rock and ambient. The latest release from the artist, titled Speculative Dance Party Vol. 2: Too Drunk, continues this trend as an afro-beat intro leads to a track from Bow Wow and Ciara, creating an interesting juxtaposition to say the least, along with the sample of American composer Philip Glass which lays atop Flo Rida and T.Pain’s “Low.” The mix is separated into six parts each containing r&b and hip hop hits as well as more underground electronic productions from Caribou, Nicolas Jaar, Pantha Du Prince, and Burial. Transfer in Jamaica opens up a world of warped pop culture as a glitched-out track from pop singer Britney Spears begins one of the mix’s, blending hazily into[...]

Tonight: Odesza

Seattle production duo, Odesza, formed back in 2012 when Western Washington University seniors Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight began collaborating on tracks, eventually releasing the debut album, Summer’s Gone, later that year. Blending elements of chillwave, synthpop, ambient and downtempo, the pair’s lush, atmospheric sounds caught on in the electronic music community, as two tracks from the debut, “How Did I Get Here” and “iPlayYouListen,” reached number one on the Hype Machine popular chart. The following year saw the release of the EP, My Friends Will Never Die, and a booking to open for Pretty Lights on his Fall tour. Extensive touring and the release of its second album, In Return, has earned Odesza widespread acclaim, appearing at Coachella, Hangout Festival, and Sasquatch Festival. The duo has been on the road in support of the sophomore effort since this past fall and will continue through the summer as the pair continued to develop its sets which[...]

Chauncey Tails Releases New Beat Collection

Gowanda producer Chauncey Tails has become known for his typically brief tracks that feature pitch-shifted vocals and hip hop samples alongside whimsical, lush sounds that create a smooth feel that often ranges from melancholy and introspective to soulful, club-inspired beats. The artist’s latest release, Collection IV, compiles nine tracks made over the last year and provides a comprehensive look at the sound he’s been able to cultivate in that time, with engaging vocal chops, recognizable samples, and visceral percussion and bass. Leading off with, “Only You,” a bouncing, bass-heavy cut, the collection opens with high-energy, ethereal beats before leading into the more melancholy progression on the aptly titled “I Feel Like Nothing But You Are Everything.” “Squirt” features uplifting piano stabs and various warm sounds reminiscent of Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth’s tracks.Perhaps the most impressive drums and bass sounds are found on “Young Drop Top Lexus” that places a fiery hip hop[...]

Transfer in Jamaica Releases Speculative Party vol. 1

Buffalo producer/mashup artist, Transfer in Jamaica, creates music that, at it’s most compelling, can shift our perception of two seemingly unrelated styles and reveal an unlikely common ground, reminding the listener that genres are dynamic as a result of this eclectic creativity. The artist’s latest release,  Speculative Party vol.1: “Cry If I want To,” is part left-field DJ mix, part mashup album, divided into three parts that spans styles from indie rock to r&b, trip-hop, soul, electronic, and mainstream pop. The first track includes transitions from a pitched-up Beyonce sample to Radiohead’s “Lotus Flower” along with an surprisingly fluid segue from Salt-n-Pepa’s “Shoop” to Pixies’ funky, guitar-led track “Hey.” The third part of the release finds Transfer in Jamaica leaning towards a more hip-hop/club music approach with tracks from Disclosure, Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, Rihanna, and Kanye West making appearances. Speculative Party Vol. 1 offers a pretty comprehensive snapshot of pop music over the[...]

Fashion Expo 1990 Releases New Album, waiting for memphis

Earlier this year, the debut release from Fashion Expo 1990, a relatively unknown electronic/house alias of Difficult Night’s Miles Kirsch, was named our Album of the Week here at buffaBLOG. That record was filled with nostalgic vibes from various dance music scenes of the 90’s and featured impressive keyboard melodies and highly dexterous rhythms along with interesting sample selection. Earlier this month, the project released its second album, the six track waiting for memphis, via bandcamp. Like the self-titled debut, the record consists of previously recorded material, this one dating back to 2006. Standout tracks include “98% hustling,” with it’s archaic samples and breezy melodies and “c.h.a.r.m.,” which features soulful piano chords and classic house vocal sampling. Once again, the keys throughout the album are virtuosic and give many of the tracks an urgent feel to balance out the ethereal, blissed out element found in the artists’ production.
