Halloween Weekend with Superstar DJ Keoki

Costumed club kids will gather this Halloween weekend for Superstar DJ Keoki as he makes appearances in both Rochester and Buffalo. His music became pivotal in the early onset of dance culture. El Salvador born, he was raised on Maui, Hawaii and by the early ’90s, he was developing as a star on the scene. He worked with the TWA Flight Center in New York which allowed him to travel for free. Within the nightlife of Manhattan, he found his future. Wearing a jeweled crown, big furry collars and gold chains, he developed his image as “Superstar DJ” as a gimmick but it eventually turned into a phenomenon. He worked parties for the likes of Lou Reed, Deborah Harry, and The B-52’s. Steve Levy, president of Moonshine Music, signed Keoki to the label, pushing out records that were top-selling, including “Superstar DJ Keoki – All Mixed Up” and “Disco Death Race 2000.” His[...]

Still Diggin’: Always Dancing

Another year has passed and my musical evolution has continued on. Record Store Day is coming up once again, and I have a story to tell. My grandparents introduced me to vinyl. When I was small, I was fascinated by their turntable. I would push the glass door gently so it would pop open. My grandmother, the matriarch of the Greco family, would come over and help me pick out a record. Their collection was filled with the classics, especially the beloved Frank Sinatra. Probably around three or four years old, I would always pick out Sesame Street Fever which she would then drop the needle on so I could dance around in the living room. The hilarious child-inspired rendition of Saturday Night Fever, SSF is a concept album made by Sesame Street in 1978. The album artwork is ridiculously and hilariously on point. Bert, Ernie and the Cookie Monster pose[...]

It’s fun and can build up great anticipation for the partygoer, especially if it’s at a spot that no one has never seen or been to ever,” said Igloo’s Rufus Gibson. “Buffalo has a very structured party scene. Same show, same venue, same time of year. We wanted to break the mold and throw a little mystery in the mix,” said the crew’s John Sullivan. “Our goal is[...]

Southern drawlin’ straight from the ATL, Young Thug kickstarted his career when he signed over to Gucci Mane’s 1017 Brick Squad Records. The number of her album releases has grown exponentially over the years, whether they be studio albums or a part of her live series. Her merch, bearing the iconic flexing pixie-cut chick, continues to sell. Through activism and a fight for preservation, DiFranco helped save the old church on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, which is now coined Babeville. It is home to the headquarters for Righteous Babe Records, her self-established label, as well as Asbury Hall, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, and the Ninth Ward bar. It would be an understatement to say that Ani DiFranco has been busy[...]

Tonight: K.Flay

When Kristine Flaherty was in California attending Stanford University, she began making rap music as a joke. A parody track opened the door to her passion for music and writing, and sparked her career as K.Flay. She began creating tracks last fall, uncertain of what would become of them. She sought out crowdfunding to bring her album to fruition, rather than her route signing with RCA. For her album Life as a Dog, she broke off from her major label to take initiative for more creative control over her art, and also to establish a more intimate relationship with her fans. “It seemed like everybody had an opinion. It should be more electronic, it should be more dancey, it should be more pop, but I never really fit and I never really wanted to fit the mold that they had in mind,” she said in her crowdfunding pledge video. Through crowdfunding[...]
