JOHNS Begin Grift Marks Pre-Sale, Debut Music Video for “Thrust”

Buffalo’s resident dark garage rockers, JOHNS, are prepping the release of their full length debut, Grift Marks, set to drop on March 28th through local imprint, Peterwalkee Records. The album is now available for a limited edition pre-sale (you can purchase here), and is set to include some pretty nice incentives for dropping your money ahead of time. $20 snags you a pristine white vinyl copy of the record (only 50 have been printed) with a digital download for that one friend who still doesn’t have a player. Also included is a copy of the band’s bonus 5-track EP, House of No Lungs, a JOHNS t-shirt, poster, sticker, and a button. Now that is how you spend $20. Action Bronson – “Actin’ Crazy”

Queens MC, Action Bronson, is larger than life in every sense of the word. His music video game is always on point, and it’s not a stretch to say that he could be the best in the game as far as visuals are concerned. Themes have ranged from action movies to Westerns, but every time a Bronson video drops, you know it’ll be entertaining, and you know that the big guy is probably going to try to show off his mobility. This time though, Bronson lets the green screen do the work for him, in a cheeky video for recent single, “Actin’ Crazy.” Between scenes of him blasting off in computer-generated rocket ships and using Super Saiyan-like flying abilities to dunk a flaming basketball, the green screen returns to standard green, and Bronsolino gets the behind-the-scenes luxury of lint-rolling females taking good care of his black v. Joywave Premieres Music Video for “Somebody New”

Rochester’s Joywave (or JOYWAVE, we don’t really know these days) is becoming dangerously close to being too big for our regional coverage categories, but the five-piece continues to remain loyal to WNY, in particular its home town of Rochester. The group frequently comes home for special appearances at the Bug Jar, the band’s home away from home, so at least for now, we will continue to cover them within our Rochester posts. Last week, we posted that the band finally announced the release of its debut album, How Do You Feel Now, set to drop on April 21st, and just yesterday, Joywave premiered the music video to the LP’s first single, “Somebody New,” via Stereogum. Max Garcia Conover – “Motorhome (a love song)”

Jamestown, NY native, Max Garcia Conover, has begun to release weekly songs and videos while holed up in his home recording studio in his new home in or around Portland, Maine. His first video, “Moterhome (a love song),” was released on February 9th and has since released two more videos, the most recent on Sunday, in his year long project. While this Bon Iver-like exile is not a new concept to the musician, this year, the folkie decided to try something a bit different, creating a Patreon page where you, as the listener/viewer, can leave him “tips” for every time a song comes out, giving you early access to the videos and more. Hot Tip Releases “DNA” Video, Produced by Flatsitter

Hot Tip’s new video for “DNA,” produced by Flatsitter, is what your TV does when you’re sleeping. And what your TV does when you’re sleeping is give everyone who’s still awake seizures. It’s a dance party, and someone faceless brought a body suit and a color pallette straight out of a 90’s neon wet dream. Definitely fits the song’s frayed, frenetic vibe. BadBadNotGood and Ghostface Killah – “Ray Gun” ft. DOOM

Toronto trio, BadBadNotGood, burst on to the scene a few years back remixing the likes Odd Future and A Tribe Called Quest. Their jazzy, improvisational sound got the attention of some of rap’s most well-respected artist, and it set them up for this collaboration with the Wu Tang’s Ghostface and the masked underground rap giant DOOM. “Ray Gun” is a strange ride following a metal-faced alien, played by Odd Future’s Left Brain. The video heads into a go-go bar and the veiled assailant tries to take a lady back with him to the motherland. The whole thing is pretty weird and shot like it’s in the 80s, working nicely with really great verses from Ghostface and DOOM. The Weeknd – “Earned It”

Apparently there’s this movie coming out in a few weeks that’s based on a series of erotic novels that you can buy at Target called Fifty Shades Of Grey, and it will be a huge hit because all of our neighbors who’ve bought the books at Target will bumrush theaters down the street from Target to see if the movie measures up. The soundtrack for 50 Shades Of Grey, also available at Target, will include sexed up contributions from artists like Beyonce, Sia,  Ellie Goulding, Jessie Ware, The Rolling Stones (yes! “Beast Of Burden!”), and Toronto’s very own The Weeknd, who’s featured in the first video off of that soundtrack, the mildly NSFW “Earned It.” Actually, The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) doesn’t need to sex up his music any more than it already is, and based on this clip featuring Grey lead actress Dakota Johnson, this could well be the[...]

Maybird Reveals “Down and Under” Video

The Netsky brothers have done it again with the video for “Down and Under,” the title track and album closer to Rochester indie band Maybird’s intense 2013 debut. Featuring the stark and plaintive vocals of Josh,  evocative direction, and heartbeat like drums from Adam, not to mention some fine pedal steel guitar from Kurt Johnson, “Down and Under” is pure upstate / downstate New York like the band itself now that they’ve since partially relocated to Brooklyn: walks in snowy woods in a red flannel jacket, art happenings, and listening to records in Christmas light lit city dwellings, all meditatively shot by brother Adam. The band is currently working on new tunes for the follow up to Down and Under, which can be listened to and purchased from Maybird’s Bandcamp page.

Chae Hawk Drops Video to “Dirty Gospel”

Chae Hawk, who has been in the game longer than some of his fans have been alive, does it again with the release of his latest effort, Dance Party for the Heavy Hearted. The album, an audio-visual journey now four years in the making, is well worth the wait. Like any great quest, it’s not just the destination, but how you actually get there, that makes it worthwhile. Anyone can churn out a record, but Chae chose to carefully curate this release, and it shows in the quality of the beats, lyrics, and visuals. Buffalo gets to claim his as ours, but with an ever-expanding fanbase, Hawk’s name is known almost everywhere, and not just for the music. Passion in Constellation Releases Video for “Smash”

Passion in Constellation (aka Chris Alan) got 2015 started right releasing a dazzling clip for “Smash” at the end of last week that more than lives up to it’s name. Created by parties unknown and consisting of found footage and edited to the aggressive syncopation of Alan’s latest meditation on the EDM form, the clip calls to mind the Emergency Broadcast Network,  vintage MTV bumpers, and film class experiments out of UB’s Media Study Department. It’s also a bold visual step forward for this ambitious up and comer, and hopefully a sign of things to come.

Panda Bear – “Boy Latin”

Panda Bear’s music has always felt like daydreaming, or recapturing that awe struck feeling of childhood. Those deceptively simple repetitions and stoned tempos seem like they could go on forever, and are on full display here. While Animal Collective’s Centipede Hz, and fellow band member Avey Tare’s latest album were too Saturday-morning-cartoons for even their music, the tracks on Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper are great and one of the first releases to look forward to in 2015. “Boys Latin” and its polyphonic lines are like a cubist painting, where everything is broken down into little facets to reveal a bigger picture. Then the next section is the choir boy of one, and the only words you can understand: “Dark clouds resurface again, and a shadow moves in.” In a more just world, this song would be played at FAO Schwarz during every holiday. SHEDS Release Debut Video

It’s no secret that the blog has been recently drooling over Lancaster-based act, SHEDS. With that being said, we were more than pumped to get a hold of the band’s debut music video for the song “HPBG” or high pressure basketball game. The video is very true to the title, clipping select moments from various intense NBA games and slicing them in a very dreamy direction. SHEDS is currently working on their upcoming full-length with an aim for a spring release, but I’m sure you can check back here as soon as there are any developments. SWISH.

Death Grips – “Inanimate Sensation”

Death Grips is one of the biggest wild cards in music. Whether it’s dropping albums for free without their label’s permission, or no-showing at Lollapalooza, Death Grips do not appear to ever really give a fuck about the music industry. The trio of Zach Hill, MC Ride, and Andy Morin announced their disbandment along with a project earlier this year, and due to label obligations, they owe us one more album. “Inanimate Sensation” will serve as the lead single to that forthcoming album, entitled the powers that b. This song is a doozy. The video is set in a Space Jam-like arena with a fallen Jumbo-Tron taking center stage. On the video screen, Ride’s menacing presence guides us through a great track, but one that is almost uncomfortable to listen to. Wooden Waves Premieres Music Video for “Big Wheel”

The long wait for Wooden Waves‘ Wilder Dreams is nearly over. The months (years?) in the making record, which saw the final pressings take a detour to somewhere in Europe earlier this spring, will culminate next week, Friday, December 5th, at Mohawk Place as the quintet will celebrate the release of Wilder Dreams (One Percent Press) along with Mallwalkers, Jack Toft, and more. Today, WW premiered the music video for “Big Wheel,” an early stand out track from the upcoming record. Shot by go to Queen City director, Malt Disney, the video finds the five-some exploring the late, great Super Flea grounds for relic video games, rims, and top-of-the-line snowboard gear. This marks the second clip shot at Super Flea this year. Earlier this summer, Malt directed Jack Toft roaming the Super Flea as well for MC’s “Beef on Weck” video. Orations Releases Music Video for “Anhedonic Moan”

Brooding post-punkers, Orations, released the music video for the rather dark “Anhedonic Moan” this afternoon. The video plays like one of those B-Horror intruder flicks, where the masked strangers eerily gaze upon the band until something really bad happens.
