Hayes Noble – “Forget It”

Northwest Illinois native Hayes Noble’s debut album Head Cleaner is due out in under a month and they are starting strong with first single “Forget It.” The single combines earsplitting shoegaze and post-hardcore with a nod to guitar driven indie noise that burst out of the mid-80’s punk scene. Fuzzy, tube driven guitar surges forward, scattering and dispersing into a wide wall of sound that Hayes harnesses into riffs and rocking rhythms. Young Hayes’ earnest vocals stand on that bed of noise while never being engulfed by it. The home recording enthusiast uses a strong punk drum beat, full of fun punk fills. The rhythms leads you right to a choice guitar solo, chunky, soaring and full of emotion. This coming-of-age noise rocker is blazing a new trail in a town with no scene, coming from small town middle America. Hayes worked with Daytrotter co-founder Pat Stolley to record and[...]

Savagery – “Laughter”

Savagery released their first track, “Laughter,” a fuzz-pop track gone awry. The song centers around a scorned relationship eroded after disloyalty that can’t be laughed off. Sonically sharp staccato’d percussion compressed so far it almost sounds like a glitchy hard drive clicking while being revisited by Savagery’s past love, them full of regret reflecting on their disloyalty and the happiness they missed because of their betrayal. Savagery’s haunting singing is the center piece with synths layering under them to create a ghostly double vision effect, while melodic synths and interweaving guitar line dance above their venomous lyrics. Bobby Saffron x Eliza Shaddad – “Oceana”

Coming from Birmingham, Bobby Saffron combines his skills with Eliza Shaddad for a new indie pop track called “Oceana.”  The bouncing rubbery bass, hand claps, and sugary synths keeps you bopping along with Bobby and Eliza’s shimmering pop vocals which play off each other wonderfully. The track culminates into an ear worm chorus but is outdone by a deft and smooth bridge before the sugar rush of the final chorus. In the summer of 2020, a panic attack on the Ilkley Moors kicked off a period of anxiety for Bobby, leading him to reconsider various parts of his life, including his role as frontman for South London slink rockers CHILDCARE. In the resulting tussle with his sanity, he moved to Birmingham, built a studio in his garden, and started making music on his own. Fans of Alex Cameron, Hot Chip, and Ariel Pink will find this track delicious. Check out[...]

Gryningen – “Radioskugga”

Swedish west coast noise pop group Gryningen come from Gothenburg with their first single, “Radioskugga.” It opens with a tape click and light flanger guitar strum, but that tone quickly cracks open like the maw of an oceanic beast. That large chasm of wailing guitar closes up fast with a fuzzy indie rock guitar riff that fills your chest and head with rockin’ fun fuzz. The familiar tasty rock sound grows ominous as the bottom end on it opens up to let the noise in. The track shifts deftly under your feet bringing undulating cascading horns twilling from above disorientating and thrilling the listener. Ever shifting, full of youth, fuzz, energy, and creativity this young group has an exciting sound that fans of Japandroids, Ty Segull, No Age, and Women will take joy in. Romanie – “Anthony”

Melbourne based Romanie is bringing the powerful indie-pop with haunting new single, “Anthony”. Her spectral vocals pair perfectly with the jangling guitar riffs brought in by her band, both coming together on a big booming reverb dripped chorus that will have you hooked. The heartfelt lyrics of Romaine were written after watching the movie “The Father” starring Anthony Hopkins. A story and song about dementia, Romanie is unfortunately familiar with the topic, having lost her grandfather who was suffering from the disease before passing away last year. Fans of Lykke Li, Maggie Rogers, and Lana Del Rey will find a lot to love on this track. Romaine said this about making the latest track “I remember coming home from the cinema late at night and getting this wave of inspiration. I sat down with my guitar and wrote the song almost completely in one go. We were still in and[...]

Tines – “Thin Blue Line / Rock and Roll Witness Protection Program”

Over the course of rock n roll’s sordid history different styles of songwriting have emerged and worked their ways to the forefront. On one end of the spectrum, bands such as Black Sabbath, The Who, and Rush, have woven together fictional stories and flawless music to create grand, theatrical performances. All the way on the other end of songwriting and storytelling resides punk rock. Its DIY ethics are breathed into every aspect of creating, performing, and way of life. Lyrics from punk bands are personal. The songs are shorter and hit harder than those of the rock n roll grandfathers. Different, yes. Worse or better, that is irrelevant. Piercing the belief that a band must chose one style or the other is Buffalo’s very own rock n roll soldiers, Tines. Members of Tines have lived in the trenches of rock n roll since the nineties, fronting various projects, running a[...]

Night Slaves – THREE AND A HALF

Operating as mysterious as the shadows that lurk after sundown, Night Slaves, a wonderful boogie-rock band with an affinity for ’60’s Brit Pop and psychedelia, have recorded a new album. THREE AND A HALF, released on Buffalo-based label Swimming Faith, appropriately dropping in mid-March during the height of the COVID-19 crisis. Regardless of the timing, THREE AND A HALF has definite staying power. Track one, “CAGE,” begins with an eerily familiar drum beat. Some recognize it as a re-imagining of the Rolling Stones hit “Get off My Cloud.” From there Night Slaves steer the track into a well-polished psych-rock groove complete with organ and synthesizer melodies that create an encompassing sound. Vocalist John Toohill cuts through with a command and ease to his vocal delivery. The lyrics tell a narrative about a return to an old form, as Toohill croons, “I’m back on the scene again.” A perfect track to[...]

Pearl Jam – Gigaton

These days, the only time you ever hear the word ‘grunge’ in and around music is as part of the sentence ‘grunge is dead.’ That’s not exactly true, but or is it a large-scale exaggeration. It’s now more than twenty-five years since Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain took his own life, and the sad anniversary of that event last year was the first time mainstream media outlets had written about grunge in forever. To them, Nirvana was the whole grunge scene. Without Cobain, the scene was gone. Those of you with your ear to the ground and a more open mind will know that was never the case. Grunge carried on and still carries on to this day, and the biggest name still active in the field is Pearl Jam. It’s been a very long time since Pearl Jam released an album (2013’s ‘Lightning Bolt,’ which attracted fair-to-good reviews), but now they’re[...]

Tonight: Night Slaves

Inventive industrial act Night Slaves will be celebrating the release of their newest LP THREE AND A HALF with a show tonight at Revolution Gallery. Anchored by core members David Kane and John Toohil, the group has recently expanded to include Lucy Bell, Ryan McMullen, and Kelly Mourdant. Their sound is an amalgam of 60s garage rock, psychedelic Brit-pop, darkcore, and just a smattering of sardonic post-punk sensibility. While previous releases, such as 2018’s Night Slaves III, have leaned more heavily towards the darker industrial side, their new album finds the group embracing a new sound. Their new single “ABSOLUTE” is a deeply infectious dance track, much in the spirit of “HandClap” by Fitz and the Tantrums. It will be interesting to see the direction this album takes, but I for one am excited. Providing support will be psych-chamber pop group Parade Chic, and lo-fi dream pop artist Ex-Pat. Revolution[...]
