Tonight: Twin Peaks

Tonight, incandescent Chicago DIY indie garage rockers Twin Peaks make a stop in Buffalo at the Rec Room with fellow Chicagoans Post Animal and local rock heroes Made Violent. God bless them, these dudes formed their band back in high school in 2010 amidst other proper shenanigans, getting their legs becoming mainstays in Chicago’s DIY scene before releasing their debut EP Sunken in 2012 and continuing a prolific string of releases up thru last year’s Sweet ’17 Singles, a collection of laid back psych garage recordings the band released as singles monthly throughout 2017. Chicago’s Post Animal will be making a welcome return after making a very heady debut at the Tralf a few years ago and making good on a show scotched by the death of a van last year I believe, while local fellas Made Violent will be getting everybody in the mood with their tasteful, California sober hard rock[...]

Bully at Mohawk Place (9/21/18)

Nashville’s Bully brought down the house at Buffalo’s Mohawk Place on September 21st, touring in support of their ferocious sophomore LP, Losing (Sub Pop). Bully reignited the raw intensity of 90s grunge and indie-alternative with confessional, intimate lyrics indebted to classic emo, with Alicia Bognanno’s sandpaper rasp spitting caustic kiss-offs to anyone with the gall to stand in her way. Along for the ride that evening were fellow Nashvillains JEFF the Brotherhood, whose latest record, Magick Sounds (Dine Alone), deepens and expands upon the band’s downtuned garage-rock sound with elements of drone, psychedelic, and even krautrock. Originally a two-piece, brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall were joined onstage by an expanded lineup featuring members of Daddy Issues, The Dead Weather, and Raconteurs, whose masterful playing created an atmosphere of hypnotic, surreal intensity. Opening the show that night were Buffalo’s own Made Violent, proving that the Queen City is no slouch when it comes to raucous rock[...]

Tonight: Made Violent

You hear a lot of talk these days about rock being dead. It’s a very fashionable thing to say, based on “diminished market share” or the lineup and crowd sizes at Coachella, but at the local and underground level we know better. Yes it’s true that the local scene isn’t particularly well supported by Western New York beyond the wonderful music fans that do, in part because some rock fans are sitting home complaining about rock being dead, but the fact remains that rock is very much alive, and tonight it’s going to be at the Mohawk when hometown heroes Made Violent bring it all back with some help from local skull crushers Ugly Sun and Philadelphia indie rockers Cold Fronts. Combining propulsive garage rock with Tweedyesque vocals and strong melodies, Cold Fronts feel like they’re actually a band on a big label worth a damn. Discovered by the justifiably legendary impresario Seymour Stein,[...]

Tonight: White Reaper

Ascendant Louisville hard rockers White Reaper headline a killer lineup tonight at the Town Ballroom with Chicago psych rock outfit Post Animal and local garage rock heroes Made Violent. In town in support of their very, very well reviewed sophomore effort The World’s Best American Band, White Reaper will be unleashing their bold, fully loaded and totally kick ass 70’s/80’s rock stylings (minus the problematic baggage) on the willing and eager faithful, while Post Animal returns to play Buffalo twice in one year having melting faces with their Sabbath meets Tame Impala jams at the Tralf in May when they opened for that ill fated and abridged Wavves show. Hometown garage rock troublemakers Made Violent, who are currently prepping for the release of new music next year and getting ready for a tour of the midwest with Ugly Sun, open the show, returning to the Town Ballroom stage that started it all,[...]

Tonight: Herd Fest Day 3

Herd Fest Day 3 launches tonight and after catching so many acts the past two days and lack of sleep, my ability to craft creative introductions isn’t what it used to be. Mohawk Place kicks off the night with sets from plucky up-and-comers Johnny and the Man Kids, new rock act The Gennies, Brooklyn indie band Kissing is a Crime, pop act Suburbs, fun indie outfit Gillian, and rounded out by alt-rockers Younger Then. $7 cover with doors at 7pm. Milkie’s also kicks off early at 7pm with sets from synth-pop act Small Smalls, pop-punkers Dead Lounge, bluesy alt rockers White Shade, post-emo outfit Into the Wake, and rounded out by noisey punk act Filthy Gorgeous. $7 cover. DBGB’s is set to have one of the biggest shows of the festival, with Made Violent headlining with support from buzzing newcomers Ugly Sun and a recently subbed Super American. $5 cover with doors[...]

Made Violent at Studio at Waiting Room (5/5/17)

Buffalo’s own rock ‘n’ roll rebels Made Violent played a blistering hometown show at the Studio at Waiting Room on May 5th, whipping the crowd into a fierce frenzy. With a seven-inch single soon to be released and a new album fully recorded, Made Violent are making moves, expanding their international reach to an even wider audience hungry for pure, uncut rock. Joining the fray that evening were Rustbelt roots-rockers Sixties Future, preparing a full length of their own, and indie punks Ugly Sun, who recently finished an EP. Check out the photos below! Tonight: Made Violent

Buffalo’s own garage rock masters Made Violent don’t get to play the Queen City very often, but when they do it is a big deal, both for fans and the band themselves. Tonight the trio will be headlining the Studio at Waiting Room. The show  comes just days after the release of the video for their new single “Basement Ghost” which will be released on a 7″ vinyl with the B-side being “More Ways Than One”.  Also on the bill tonight will be Ugly Sun and Sixties Future. Doors open at 7pm, tickets are $13 at the door.

Staff Picks

To cap off our Best of 2015 coverage, we asked a handful of our staff writers to submit their favorite albums and songs of the year. Make sure to follow all of the blog’s year in review coverage throughout the month of December Cliff Parks Favorite Album Father John Misty – I Love You, Honeybear I don’t want to go with this album, it was my Album of the Year So Far earlier this summer and I loved the latest from Tame Impala, CHVRCHES, and Neon Indian, but with America currently cracking up, Father John Misty’s sophomore album is album of 2015 now more than ever. Between the ascent of candidate Trump and our nation’s mounting multiple existential crises, Josh Tilman’s ode to love, manhood, and getting hitched to that special someone so you can ride out the American apocalypse together seems right on time, all the time lately. EdgeFest 2015 at the Outer Harbor (9/12/15)

In spite of Saturday’s less than ideal weather, 103.3’s annual Edgefest was hugely successful. Thousands turned out on a dreary day to see the likes of Rise Against, Coheed & Cambria, Modest Mouse, and many other groups as the rain ceased to let up. Local band Made Violent has created quite a fan base over the last couple years and put on a show that seems to ensure its continued success. The trio, who leave for a two week tour of the UK today, managed to set the tone of the show and the other acts followed suit. Edgefest was a show not to be missed, downpour and all. Today and Tonight: EdgeFest 2015

What a day for music in Buffalo, huh? Once a year, 103.3 the Edge puts together a showcase of impossible acts that you’d never think to see together on a show. That showcase is known as EdgeFest 2015. With such a jam-packed schedule a schedule is truly the best way to preview a special night like tonight. 2pm: Parking lot and box office open 3pm: Doors open 3:40pm – 4:10pm: Boots 4:15pm – 4:45pm: Made Violent 4:50pm – 5:20pm: Highly Suspect 5:25pm – 5:55pm: The Sheepdogs 6:00pm – 6:30pm: July Talk 6:35pm – 7:35pm: Our Lady Peace 7:40pm – 8:40pm: Coheed and Cambria 8:45pm – 10pm: Modest Mouse 10:05pm – 11:20pm: Rise Against Tickets for EdgeFest are $43 at the door. Anyone under 16 needs to have a parent with them. The event is rain-or-shine, so pack a poncho and get ready to rock regardless of the weather.

Made Violent Shares Interactive “Wasted Days” Video

Our latest Buffalo rock heroes are at it again with the release of their latest video, the interactive and wonderfully ludicrous “Wasted Days.” A delightful ode to _____ing off, the clip features the lads ____ing off around NYC with joyful abandon, and the interactive camera (which actually works like a dream!) makes this ideal for any much needed daytime  ____ ing off. You can easily watch this video a few times, monkeying with the 360 degree camera to see what else has been crammed into this burst of psychedelic awesomeness, and ____ off for at least a good 15 minutes. Keep an eye out for Made Violent around town (including Edgefest next Saturday) before they tour the UK with Wolf Alice, who are currently the hottest band in the England.

Just Announced: Modest Mouse

One thing that has been happening more and more is that we are getting concert announcements for bands that are totally out of left field. We usually know ahead of time the majority of bands that are going to come through before they are publicly announced based on our network of Buffalo music industry insiders, but not today’s announcement. After a fairly quiet summer at the outer harbor, it was announced at 5pm on the dot that on Saturday, September 12th, 103.3 the Edge would be hosting an evening co-headlined by Modest Mouse and Rise Against, with support by Coheed and Cambria, Highly Suspect, Boots, Made Violent and MORE. Isaac Brock must have had some great wings when he came last spring. Tickets go on sale this Friday, July 10th, at noon via TicketMaster for $31.03 (only as an early bird special). Yeehaw.

Matt & Kim w/Made Violent at Canalside (6/4/15)

Well folks, congratulations. We did it. It’s been building for years, and it’s certainly been talked about a whole lot, but Thursday night it sure felt like the much ballyhooed “new Buffalo” was real, and it was awesome. The first Thursday at Canalside of 2015, which featured Brooklyn duo Matt & Kim, new local heroes Made Violent. and Boston’s Bearstronaut, was something brand new for Buffalo, an immediate victory for the youth experiment with this year’s edition of Canalside, and something close to a dream come true. The Millennials and 20 somethings were truly in the ascendency Thursday night, with many attending their first Thursday at Canalside judging by the rampant confusion about the cash for tickets currency exchange concept that has been in place for the last few years. Drawn by a bill featuring decidedly younger artists, they were there to kick it out, and all three bands held[...]

Tonight: Matt & Kim

It’s that time of year again. As the weather gets warmer and the days grow longer, the Thursday at Canalside series has returned, and kicking off the year is none other than Matt & Kim. While the Brooklyn act might not find its names on any year-end lists, few would argue with the pair’s incredible live shows. Bringing to the stage a catalog of shimmering catchy pop gems and raucuous energy, the duo has become a staple of summer music festivals and concert series. Even those who aren’t fans of the band’s catalog will be able to enjoy Matt & Kim’s series of enthusiastic covers and general sense of fun that few live acts these days can match. The band has played Buffalo more than a few times with the crowd growing on each successive visit, so expect to get down there early tonight (gates open at 5pm). And if that’s[...]

Tonight: Made Violent

Though the trio’s local appearances have been somewhat sparse, Made Violent is finally bringing their signature refined slack-rock sound to the Studio at Waiting Room tonight. The group’s recent self-titled EP release has been nothing short of well received, and is yet more tangible proof that these guys have carved themselves a comfortable spot in the upper echelon of bands on the rise. In addition to successfully managing to bust out of the Buffalo scene, they’ve already broken the U.S. seal in terms of touring, all while garnering attention from major music publications like NME. They have the essence of early Cage the Elephant paired with all the best Brit-pop big wigs like the Kooks and Arctic Monkeys. You can tell MV’s music is built for a live setting and a large crowd. The EP is chock full of raw, punchy grunge tunes that leave me amped for the prospects[...]
