Tonight: Remember Sports

Remember Sports is the modus operandi for the band formerly known as Sports and they are making a stop tonight at the 9th Ward. Originating from a small college town in Gambier, Ohio, Remember Sports started to pick up steam after their relocation to Philadelphia. The band signed to Father/Daughter Records and indie buzz quickly followed thereafter. The band is touring in support of their latest album Slow Buzz. Fans of Speedy Ortiz, Diet Cig, or The Beths should plan on taking a trip down to Delaware Ave this evening. Supporting the band will be tour mate Joey Nebulous and locals Velvet Bethany. Doors are at 8pm with a $12 cover.

Tonight: Orations

Tonight, get on down to Mohawk Place to catch an electrifying lineup that is sure to start your weekend off right. 

Buffalo-based shoegaze act Orations will be performing tonight in celebration of the release of their new LP Receiver, which is dripping in subdued, moody, post-punk goodness. The band has generously dropped two new tracks: “All The Honey” and “False Face,” on their Bandcamp to hold you over until tonight. Trust us, you’re not going to want to miss this one. Sharing the stage with them is local fuzzed-out emo heartthrobs Cooler, and the unassuming-yet-thrilling Nylon Otters. There will also be solo performances by Dave Allison and Bill Nehill. Doors open at 8pm with a $7 cover.

Tonight: Mikaela Davis

The best way to blaze your own trail is to learn all of the rules, and then throw them away. Rochester native Mikaela Davis studied orchestral harp for symphony playing in high school and college, and then she moved to Brooklyn to forge her own singer-songwriter career. This evening, she will bring her new album Delivery to the 9th Ward. Produced by Grammy Winner John Congleton, Delivery hands us beat and groove driven tracks such as “Get Gone” and “Do You Wanna Be Mine,” as well as beautifully sparse songs, “Emily” and “All I Do Is Disappear,” that proves Davis successfully forged her own harp centered singer-songwriter career. Tonight: The Molice

Come out tonight and catch a killer rock ‘n’ roll show at Buffalo’s Sugar City who host a lineup of local acts. Headlining are temporary resident punk act The Molice. This Japanese three-piece is going to rock your socks off with the insanely catchy combo of candy-sweet vocals, electrifying riffs and dynamic drums. Expect material off their latest album GATE and an overall fun, livewire set from a band that can go. Sharing the bill is the college rock four-piece, Little Summer. Their upbeat, yet lackadaisical jams will bring you back to the days when all you had to worry about was getting to class on time and having enough beer money for the weekend. Tonight: Past Life

Celebrate getting over the hump tonight with a mid-week show of stellar and intimate tunes at Mohawk Place. Headlining and making the drive from Philly is the thrilling indie-rock quartet, Past Life. These four have crafted a robust and multi-textured sound that swells with crashing waves of emotion and energy. Expect personal lyrical reflections over electrifying riffs that will make your heart explode. Past Life has a reputation for a lively and rowdy set so don’t miss it. Dimming the lights and helping you to unwind is the tranquil bedroom folk act, Heave. Sit back and cozy up with singer/guitarist Emily Finlan’s warm, solemn lullabies over a lazy river of guitar string ambience. Tonight: Tokyo Police Club

Tonight, Canadian indie rock all-stars Tokyo Police Club’s finally  return to Buffalo. As per usual, this will be a performance that is certain not to disappoint. The band, hailing from Newmarket, Ontario is sure to bring its’ signature brand of catchy, up-tempo indie-rock to Town Ballroom. This marks their first show in Buffalo since a relatively intimate, yet extraordinary performance in January 2017. Tokyo Police club will be touring in support of their fourth album TPC, released in October 2018. On the record, which includes the singles such as “Hercules” and “New Blues,” the band breathes new life and another wave memorable hooks of into their familiar catalogue, one many of you have looked fondly upon since 2008’s breakout Elephant Shell. Tonight: SMUG

Local pop punk trio SMUG are celebrating their return tonight  on a jam-packed bill at Nietzsche’s. The band has been busy since the release of their debut full-length Gorgeous, which came out at the tale end of 2018, recently returning from a twelve-date east coast tour as well as wrapping up a successful college radio campaign. Joining these rascals will be grunge rock re-imaginists Ugly Sun, riot grrrl up-and-and comers Party’s Over, and the second ever revealing of somber indiemo act Wild Once. Doors are at 9pm with an $8 cover.

Tonight: Ben Folds

Alt piano-rock stalwart Ben Folds returns to the area with a rare solo show this evening at the Fallsview Casino. Known for his energetic and engaging live performances, this show will certainly appeal to old and new fans alike. Folds first rose to prominence with the Ben Folds Five after their 1997 release Whatever and Ever Amen. With songs like “Brick” and “Song for the Dumped,” Folds used his trademark sardonic wit and profanity to diffuse lyrics of melancholy and self-conflict in a way that resonated with audiences. Following the breakup of the Ben Folds Five, Folds released his debut solo record Rockin’ the Suburbs in 2001. What has been described by Folds as “punk rock for sissies” is actually a carefully crafted synthesis of pop and classical sensibilities that have defined his genre bending sound for decades. Tonight: Jose Gonzalez

Tonight the University at Buffalo Center for the Performing Arts will host Swedish singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez and The String Theory. Gonzalez’s indie style dates back to 2006 when he covered The Knife’s song “Heartbeats,” which immediately made college radio salivate. To prove himself worthy of the singer-songwriter moniker, Gonzalez continued to work on original material, releasing three solo albums within ten years. His latest effort is a live album, Jose Gonzalez & The String Theory. By creating the unlikely partnership with the avant-garde chamber orchestra, Gonzalez proves that he is not finished pushing the envelope of modern music, and that his ability to take risks keeps his fans fascinated. Doors open at 7:30pm and there is a $29 cover. Tonight: Humble Braggers

Tonight Buffalo’s Lockhouse Distillery hosts the show of your dreams with an evening of local ethereal pop and rock acts. Headlining and returning for their first show in five months is the atmospheric synth-pop four-piece, Humble Braggers. These hometown heroes will thrill you and get you moving with their vibrant vocals, bouncy bass lines, killer keys and dancy drum beats. Expect a fun and exhilarating set full of dreamy records that will give you a head rush. Don’t miss it or the opportunity to show off on the dance floor. Showing their support and taking you on a trip through your subconscious is the nostalgic psych-rock ensemble, Deadwolf. Tonight: Science Man LP Release Show

Come out and get weird tonight at Buffalo’s Electric Avenue as the mysterious lo-fi hard rocker, Science Man, celebrates the release of his debut self-titled LP and the first stop on his new tour. Born out of a science experiment gone horribly wrong, or horribly right, Science Man (John Toohill) is a self-described “monstrosity of rock and roll.” His stellar new album is made up of 11 tracks of gnarly and grimy garage rock that will melt your face faster than a Bunsen burner. With heavier-than-lead grooves, Science Man will stand on your neck and sing over you with dynamic and charismatic vocals. Tonight: Belle-Skinner

Tonight, Electric Avenue is changing things up a little bit with an evening of new folk music featuring Brooklyn’s Belle-Skinner and local folk rockers Leyda. Lilting, delicate and pleasingly esoteric, Belle-Skinner aka Maria Brosgol has a voice and guitar tone that is absolutely timeless, plus shes’s opened for the sublime Mitski, and at this point in time that’s all you really need to know. Tonight: Lesionread

Lesionread, aka Shawn Lewis aka Sean Louis, has been busy these last few years as a member of Space Cubs giving the Buffalo music scene a swift kick up the backside, but he’s doing a special solo show tonight at Mohawk Place and word on the street is that it’s going to be thoroughly bonkers. The provocative and always entertaining  Lesionread will be joined tonight by neo blues outfit The Gennies, new synth pop act VHS Era (aka blog alum Jeannette Chin), lo-fi vibe rockers Dogs In Stereo, and indie electronica act VR Sunset (aka Reggie Clark), whose debut was our Album of the Week a few weeks back. Doors are at 8pm and cover is $7.

Tonight: Vundabar (RESCHEDULED)

Let’s try this again. Tonight Boston indie art rockers Vundabar will land in Buffalo weather providing to play the much loved sonic temple that is the 9th Ward at Babeville with Nylon Otters and Velvet Bethany after their January 30th show got scotched by our somewhat erratic Buffalo winter. Combining pure garage rawness with ambitious, intricate instrumental prowess, and soaring and evocative vocals, the three dudes of Vundabar are also known to put on an energetic and tight live show worth venturing outside into the winter for. Opening the show will  be post punk garage rockers Nylon Otters with that frontman who effortlessly sounds like a young Kurt Cobain, and the dreamy garage punk of Velvet Bethany. Tonight: Bad Bad Hats

Catch indie rock group Bad Bad Hats tonight at the 9th Ward at Babeville.   From Minneapolis, Minnesota, Bad Bad Hats formed in 2012 when Kerry Alexander, Chris Hoge, and Noah Boswell attended Macalester College.  Shortly after, the trio signed to Afternoon Records through which they’ve released some singles and 2 LPs: Psychic Reader (2015), and Lightning Round (2018). Lightning Round is significant to Bad Bad Hats in numerous ways.  Notably, this recent release was recorded live in studio, differing from Psychic Reader.  Producer and collaborator Brett Bullion encouraged this.  As a result, Lightning Round demonstrates a musicality that now compares more so to Kerry Alexander’s lyricism.  Second, Connor Davison was invited to play drums on the LP, then invited to become a permanent member.  Unfortunately, the announcement of a new member is bittersweet.  Lightning Round is the last album to which bassist Noah Boswell will contribute.  He’s decided to further his education and pursue a master’s degree.[...]
