Tonight: Pigeons Playing Ping Pong

Since Mohawk Place closed its doors, there has been a void left in the local Buffalo music scene. Where do we Buffalonians get our itchy fix for live music? There are been a few new places that have popped up. After Dark Entertainment has fulfilled a certain void, with its venture The Waiting Room. Buffalo Iron Works has put together some great shows as well, however the one spot that gets over looked again and again is Nietzsche’s. Even though it has has been at it for over three decades, supplying live music nightly, the venue still seems to be a bit of an afterthought here and there. In just the last few weeks, Nietzsche’s has been putting together fantastic weeknight shows with out-of-towners, and tonight is no different. Tonight, the Allen Street staple with be bringing Baltimore’s funkadelic Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. PPPP is a quartet that will bring[...]

Today & Tonight: Well Worn Boot Comic/EP Release Party

If you need a little excitement to liven up your Easter weekend, you’d be wise to catch Well Worn Boot – possibly the most shocking band in town – at Nietzche’s tonight, for the release of their new EP and corresponding comic, Boot In Space. If you’ve never heard the band, you’re in for a completely unique experience. Imagine if Primus, The Cramps, Motorhead, and Jethro Tull were all put it a blender, and you’d have a reasonable idea of what their sound is like, but really, they’re unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Their music prominently features the flute alongside driving baselines, and old-school psychobilly guitar riffs, and they seem to take equal inspiration from punk, prog, and shock rock. The result is something wholly unique, and quite unsettling for those who aren’t prepared for it. The new EP figures to be yet another head rush of innovative, genre-bending music, and[...]

Tonight: Turkuaz with Alan Evans’ Playonbrother

Nietzsche’s is going to be the scene of a soul funk dance party tonight when Brooklyn funk powerhouse Turkuaz bring it back to Buffalo along with local hero Alan Evans’ latest project Playonbrother.  In town promoting their latest album Future 86, it’s always something when the soul funk army of Turkuaz takes over that tight stage and unleashes their focused yet rampaging brand of old school funk. Soulive’s (and City Honors alum) Alan Evans will be setting things off with his ultra soulful and jazzy Playonbrother, formerly known as the Alan Evans Trio. Prepare yourselves for righteous fun when Brooklyn, Buffalo, and the funk collide tonight. Tickets are $12 and the show starts at 10.

Tonight: Shilpa Ray

If you’re like me, you have a faux real job, such as a server, bartender or a barista. Not to say those aren’t real jobs, but let’s face it, monkeys could do our jobs, and probably with less attitude too. In our ‘desired’ vocations, we don’t get out to see shows all that often, considering a lot of shows fall of Fridays, Saturdays or the random weekdays we happen to work. However, tonight is a different case, Nietzsche’s has put together a show just for us (not really, but it’s nice to think so). Nietzsche’s will be hosting a plethora of talent this evening, most notably harmonium toating Brooklynite, Shilpa Ray, who, sans her Happy Hookers, will be bringing her own brand screaming indie roots rock to Allentown. Also on the bill will the Buffalo’s indie slacker rockers, Difficult Nights, The Coy Wolves and Nietzsche’s regular Pam Swarts. 7 bucks at[...]

Just Announced: Herd Fest

Spring has arrived in Buffalo, and just like that, things are on the up.  With summer in the city nearly here, we are happy to announce our next big party plans. Rather than do another stand alone showcase, we decided to be a bit more ambitious this time around.  On June 20th and 21st, the first weekend of summer, we are proud to present Herd Fest. What is Herd Fest? Well, think of it as our own version of CMJ/SXSW. Nine showcases over a two day period in Allentown (and slightly beyond). And for this party, we invited a few of the blog’s closest friends around to be a part of the festivities by hosting their own showcases and personally selecting some of their favorite Buffalo acts to play. While final lineups and schedules won’t be released until May, here is a taste of what Herd Fest will be offering:[...]

Tonight: Jimkata

If you’re ready to set the pace for the upcoming months, as the weather becomes a little kinder, the electro-rock grooves of Jimkata would be the right place to start. Even though the quartet is a staple within the jam circuit, with the release of their album Die Digital they set themselves aside from the aimless sea of extended improvisations. Jimkata is EDM without overkill, indie without drab, and rock without the drama. This March the group released a singles collection Feel In Light, that carries throughout a blissful chord and is best heard with the volume up high. Cosmic Dust Bunnies, hailing from Connecticut, will be opening the night with their series of high-energy ‘wavetronica’ flow. Details: 10 pieces of gold to get you in, 21+ ID to seal the deal. 9 p.m., Nietzche’s.

Tonight: Tired Iron

One of the blog’s favorite Medina based bands is throwing the towel in tonight. Tired Iron, which features Boiler 54 promoter Adam Wakefield on drums, has decided to call it a day, and as a curtain call, will be competing in tonight’s BOOM competition at Nietzsche’s. Tired Iron’s raucous post-punk single, “Rut,” caught our attention last year, and if you haven’t had the chance to catch the four piece, tonight could be your last chance. Other acts competing tonight are the Naturalists, Orius, and Child of Folly, and while we don’t want to go around throwing our hat in any band’s camp, it sure would be a nice story for Tired Iron to advance. No matter your band preference, BOOM, which as always is presented by Artvoice, kicks off tonight at 10pm with a $5 cover.

Rhubarb w/Ocupanther & Brown Sugar

We have a triple threat on our hands tonight. Each act offers a mind-bending exploration of sound, that is, if you choose to let go. Think of them as a triple-layer popsicle–flavors blending and melting together, yet distinguishable by taste and age. First on the roster is Buffalo-born Rhubarb, formed in the late 1990’s when trapper keepers were in the limelight and we prepared for epic millennium celebrations around the globe. Perhaps this pivotal timing had something to do with their sound. It’s not the over-saturated and aimless wanderings most ‘psychedelic’ music cares to label itself. Rhubarb clearly takes its roots from a jazz-standpoint, like Medeski, Martin, & Wood, slowly carving out a sensual rhythm and twisting the beat into a delightful daydream, steady on percussive leads. Next in line is Rochester-based Ocupanther, who take their name from a mythical Ocular Panther who gains control of a soul through hypnotic[...]
