Tonight: Peelander-Z

Mohawk Place welcomes music (and anime) festival staple Peelander-Z to Buffalo tonight for a colorfully comical show. The NYC via Japan via outer space group formed in 1998, and have made an indelible mark on the music scene, mainly due to their live performances, which rely heavily on audience participation and sassy superhero-esque costumes. The group is color coded, and after Peelander-Blue left the group in 2008, Peelander-Green joined Yellow and Red on their quest to become the best Japanese action comic punk band in the game. They are joined by Pink (vocals), Purple (bass), and Black, who plays guitar and produces. Their bold anime-inspired costumes are just that, so don’t believe the band when they tell you that it’s their actual skin. Concertgoers may want to consider wearing workout clothes, as the group fully expects audience participation in various cardio-friendly activities, including bowling, limbo, and some ubiquitous cowbell-ringing. Joined[...]

Just Announced: Cursive

Omaha heavyweights and indiemo staple, Cursive, is set to play Mohawk Place next year on Sunday, March 15th. The cult band will be touring in support of the expanded and deluxe reissue of its seminal, Saddle Creek released album, The Ugly Organ, a record that goes down as many a music elitists top 10, even top 5 releases of all time. The Ugly Organ was a catalyst for the emergence of indie rock, and Cursive would go on to become college radio legends. The upcoming tour will feature a variety of songs from the band’s seven album discography (we’re hoping more The Ugly Organ/Domestica select picks over Happy Hollow). I think we are good though, since the band states explicitly its are touring with a cellist. Tickets go on sale Friday, November 21st for $15 in advance, $17 day of at ticketmaster or at the Tralf Box Office. Exuent.

Quintron and Miss Pussycat

Hopefully they grabbed a couple parkas before hitting the road because New Orleans based act, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, will be dropping down on the winter wonderland that is Buffalo tonight. Made up of long time electronic musician, Quintron, and puppeteer (yep), Miss Pussycat, the pair have coined the term, “Swamp Tech,” a chaotic version of electronic dance music bred in the deep south for nearly 15 years. They even popped up on an episode of Treme, HBO’s love letter to the Crescent City’s eclectic neighborhood, a couple years back. Originally scheduled for Buffalo Iron Works, this show will now be taking place at the comfier confines of Mohawk Place. Buffalo punk-funk all-stars, Mallwalkers, the Queen City Lotto product, Scajaquada Creeps, are set to open. If you want to see something out there, fun, and original, this is the show for you. Plus, the city barely got hit with snow, so no excuses[...]

Tonight: Mooses

Fredonia psych rockers, Mooses, are set to touch down at Mohawk Place later this evening. Born in 2012 and landing on our radar earlier this year, the soaring four piece has one EP to its name, Tales From the Elephant’s Nest, containing the exhilarating song of the year contender, “Bette Davis.” Mooses is the latest act to come out of the college town, which previously birthed acts like Well Worn Boot, Zealot, and Mr. Boneless Rounding out the bill are whacked out country-folk outfit, Pants and the Family, jammy funk trio Luanjie. Music kicks off at 10pm tonight. Cover is $5.

Tonight: BoBo, Johnny Revolting, and more

Things are pretty much back to business as usual in the Queen City. It’s getting cold, the amateur street theater on Allen Street is in a recession, and Mohawk Place is once again live and well. Since reopening late this summer, the Mohawk (under new ownership) has been hosting show after show with each line up being stacked full of local home boys and home girls. Tonight is just another night at Mohawk with local acts BoBo, Cowboys of Scotland, and Johnny Revolting taking the stage. Also on the bill are Toronto’s The Nasties. Doors are at 8pm. $5.

Tonight: Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band

If you’re looking for a solid mid-weeknight blast of brilliant psychedelic rock, you’re definitely reading the right preview. Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band will be bringing their eclectic and sonically diverse set of classic rock-tinged psychedelia to Mohawk Place tonight in support of their recently-released debut studio effort, Intensity Ghost. Their compositions draw comparisons to some pretty iconic artists including the likes of Television and the Grateful Dead. Experimental guitar duo The Actors, comprising of Nick Gordon and Eric Kendall, will be opening the show. The pair was last seen at Buffalo Iron Works during the Tins EP release show for Young Blame, and is a beyond worthy act to open the show up. Music kicks off tonight at 8pm. Cover is $6.

Tonight: Zammuto

The recently resurrected Mohawk Place is certainly back with a strong lineup of shows to cement its reopening. Tonight, you can catch Zammuto, the latest project from one of the founding members of The Books, Nick Zammuto. While Nick Zammuto has been busy releasing music on his own since 2001, Zammuto is his latest project and has released 2 albums since The Books split up in 2012, including the upcoming Anchor.  Of no shock to fans of The Books, Zammuto’s music is equally creative and eclectic albeit in a more poppy direction than the previous group. Tonight’s show is a great opportunity to catch Zammuto on their small US Tour. Also, the band built a trebuchet for their latest music video, which is a pretty good reason to see what they are capable of live. Tonight’s show starts at 8pm. Tickets are $12 at the door.

Tonight: Applennium, Strange Acres, Lazlo Hollyfeld

On what appears to be another one of the best local bills of the nearing winter season, three revered Buffalo acts will be taking over Mohawk Place this Saturday night. The all-too-elusive Applennium will be bringing their affecting, dreamy blend of indie folk to the stage, joined by symphonic mood-rockers Strange Acres and the cerebral instrumentals of Lazlo Hollyfeld. Each of these three talented Buffalo acts really pulls out all the stops to ensure that their live shows are not easily forgettable, so if you’re not in a candy coma from last night’s shenanigans, you better make sure you’re at Mohawk Place tonight. Yes, it might snow—but this is Buffalo. Don’t be a wuss. The ‘hawk will open its doors tonight at 8pm for this all-ages event, and admission through those doors will cost you five bucks—probably the best five bucks you’ll spend all weekend. Tonight: Wildhoney

Tonight at Mohawk Place: a pretty interesting bill to make your Tuesday feel good. Baltimore’s Wildhoney will be coming through, supported by locals Hot Tip and Alpha Hopper. A good shoegaze band has a knack for bringing out the best in a song by softening the edges, and Wildhoney can definitely do that. There are elements to their newest EP, Seventeen Forever, that I bet are going to tear some people apart live. But at their best, what they’re doing just sounds gorgeous . Hot Tip and Alpha Hopper, as you may know, sound much more aggressive. Check this post and this post for proof. Definitely interested to see how it’ll all play out live, but feeling pretty thumbs up about it. Show starts at 8pm. $5 at the door, which is a steal. Facebook event here for more info.

Tonight: Diarrhea Planet

Without a doubt, party-punk act Diarrhea Planet is one of the most talked about bands rising in the ranks of the blogosphere. Another consensus is the off-putting band name, which some dismiss before giving them an actual listen. I, for one, think the band name sounds like a writer for a failed 90’s teen comedy came up with fictional grunge band playing a high school prom. “Like… Diarrhea Planet are totally playing prom. Duh.” The band’s sound is big, almost like if you took the good parts of Weezer, with the energy of Andrew W.K, and Nashville-style of labelmates Jeff the Brotherhood. To boot, Diarrhea Planet’s live show is incredibly engaging. This past month, I caught them in Brooklyn’s soon-to-be-closed DIY space Death By Audio, where I witnessed the sextet crunch itself onto a tiny stage, pump out jammers to a sweaty, constantly crowd surfing audience intent on pulling down the drop ceiling[...]

Tonight: Handsome Jack Album Release Show

With their Southern blues-rock sound, some might mistake Handsome Jack for one of the host of bands from the Nashville rock scene, but rather this talented four-piece hail from our very own Lockport, NY. The local retro-rockers will take the stage tonight at Mohawk Place to celebrate the release of their new album, Do What Comes Naturally. The album is already receiving early acclaim and even landed them a shout from Rolling Stone. Tonight offers a rare chance to hear the self-described “boogie-soul” band debut their latest record in an intimate venue while you still can. The band will also be joined by a local acts Bearhunter, JOHNS, and Pine Fever. Doors opens at Mohawk Place at 8pm and tickets are $7.

Tonight: The Shivas

Tonight Mohawk Place (47 East Mohawk) has a pretty bitchin’ bill that will appease both the DIYers and entry level plebs. Headlining the stacked bill is Portland-based dream-surf foursome, The Shivas. With releases on both K Records and Burger Records, the band’s sound could easily be compared to SW/MM/NG, Beach Fossils, and a pinch of Aaron and the Burrs.  Not to be forgotten is the killer support for the show, featuring lo-fi electropop outfit, Small Smalls, power-pop partners, Space Wolves, and in-your-face punk act, Mayday! Should start off right at 9pm with a $6 cover.

Tonight: On The Cob

I recently read this piece in UB’s Spectrum about “Why Buffalo Rocks.” While Mohawk Place is not a 30-40 min drive from the South Campus, the writer did do a great job of introducing new students to the variety of venues that the city has to offer, giving prospective local music seekers a bit of a check list when it comes to venturing out looking for new music. And tonight’s show at the Mohawk is one of those nights where if you are new to Buffalo’s eclectic scene, then this would be a great way to catch up. Steak & Cake’s mini festival, titled On The Cob, is a long and ambitious bill covering genres from fuzz to punk to garage to even toe-tapping slacker rock out of Akron. Some of the venue’s old guard (Johnny Nobody, Shane Sweeney) will be on hand, playing along side some acts that may[...]

Tonight: Cheap Girls

Mohawk Place is a venue with more than a lot of history for Buffalonians and since it reopen last month, many bands will add to the esteemed venue’s history. That said, few bands better reflect both where the venue has been and where it is going than the showcase of bands gracing it’s stage tonight. That starts with Cheap Girls, a trio hailing from Lansing, Michigan with a sound that reflects everyone from The Replacements to Gin Blossoms to the Gaslight Anthem. They’ll be hitting our fair city in support of their latest album, Famous Graves.  The band has been quietly been making a name for themselves among retro-rock enthusiasts for awhile and with their realist blue-collar lyrics, catchy pop hooks, and classic guitar riffs, should put on quite the show. And speaking of bands of the future working off the past, Beach Slang will bring their brand of 90s-inspired[...]

Tonight: Brief Candles

Hold your PBRs to the sky—Milwaukee shoegaze indie-rockers Brief Candles will be taking over Buffalo’s Mohawk Place later this evening for a night of droning and blissful dreamrock. Their music—thick, sludgy, and actually very pretty—does not easily draw comparisons, so you’ll have to head on over to the ‘hawk and check them out for yourself. The 90’s-tinged indie jams of Buffalo-based Supergoner will be flavoring the bill in the opening slot, making the legendary Mohawk Place exactly where you want to be tonight. Doors at 8pm, $5 cover.
