Must See Shows (12.18.24-12.24.24)

Saturday, December 21st @ 7:30pm buffaBLOG Holiday Party @ Milkies Well, we’re back. These past few months we have been increasing our content load and getting back on the saddle to provide our normal churn of quality local and regional bands for your listening pleasure. With that, we wanted to re-establish some of our defunct annual traditions, which include our heavily attended annual Holiday Party. Previously, we hosted this event annually at DBGB’s, however with the closure of the establishment, we had to find a new home for the showcase and we are happy to now collaborate with Milkies for this upcoming event. If you haven’t wandered to that section of Elmwood over the past couple years, the lounge underwent a giant revamp of their menu, branding, and interior since 2023 when the general manager Nikki Rosenberg took the realm. Our past holiday parties have featured performances by JOYWAVE, Humble Braggers, Newish Star, RADARADA, The Slums,[...]

Tonight: FOWLS

Angular indie rockers FOWLS make a return to Buffalo tonight, sharing a loaded stage with some of the area’s more notable talents. Hailing from Rochester, FOWLS have been a staple of the 585 local music scene for nearly nine years, which is is kind of like eighteen years in band years. The band’s light and dance-y sound is similar to that of FOALS, Bloc Party, and Bombay Bicycle Club. Tonight is a good chance to check this band out because they will be sandwiched with Medusa, fresh off their new single with Sons of Luther, Karrot Kake’s MIke Fridmann solo project KWKA, and of course the local staples that need little introduction, Aircraft. Doors at 9pm with a $7 cover. Wear a sweater. Palace to roam by Fowls

Tonight: Bold Folly

Always turned up to 11 psych punks Bold Folly are back and they mean business tonight at Nietzsche’s with a skull crushing lineup featuring Aircraft, The Molice, and Zurich Cloud Motors. Everything about this show will make your ESP tingle because every band on this bill values melting your mind: the rededicated but no less bonkers Bold Folly are a force of nature, heady and nihilistic in equal measure and back with a surf punky new single; Aircraft’s melodic psych rock is shinier and heavier than ever before; while Tokyo punk heroes and honorary Buffalonians The Molice bring pure joy and tight riffs wherever they play. Zurich Cloud Motors, hailing from Indianapolis, Providence, and Buffalo, specialize in unhinged garage rock transmitted from a parallel universe. Get ready because it’s going to be way too much in the best ways possible. Doors are at 9pm and cover is $7. War games by Bold[...]

Tonight: The Leones 5th Annual Halloween Bash

Batavia psych rock gurus The Leones are back with their beloved Halloween show at the Mohawk with a psycho killer lineup featuring Aircraft, The Tins and Moody Cosmos. The spooky Samhein vibes will be in full effect, featuring intensely trippy jams all night long, tasteful Halloween holiday kitsch curated by Justin Bachulak, the choicest VHS horror in all their grainy, gory analog glory; and costumes are strongly encouraged. Doors are at 8pm and cover is $5 unless you bring a new Halloween costume (in the package) to donate to a worthy kid who deserves to enjoy the holiday too. Songs From The Canyon by The Leones

Tonight: Aweful Kanawful

With lineups so consistently solid that it’s hard to tell who the intended headliner is, Nietzsche’s has been the place to be on recent Friday nights. This weekend, that trend continues with local acts Ex-Pat, Aircraft, and VR Sunset, along with a special visit from Rochester’s Aweful Kanawful. Here’s what to expect from each, in two sentences or less. Ex-Pat’s lo-fi synth pop is so soothing, it might as well be a blood pressure medication. Upon hearing the reverberating, ethereal guitar, keys, and falsetto, your breathing will slow to the beat of the music, your sneakers will melt into the floor, and you’ll float into a blissful waking dream – trust me, I’ve been there. Aircraft is perfect for trying to surf on Lake Erie (good luck). Springy, yet sinuous guitars, deeply layered harmonies, and beach-y drums build a kaleidoscope of psychedelic surf-rock that’s so fun and consuming, it’s honestly[...]

Aircraft Drop Live Video For “Bad Things”

Beloved psychedelic rockers Aircraft have some new music on the way and our first taste has arrived with an atmospheric video for their new single “Bad Things.” Filmed live at Mammoth Recording Studio, “Bad Things” is more than a tad appropriately bleak, with some groovy underwater guitar sounds maybe a little bit reminiscent of “The Rain Song” and 90’s R.E.M. and hauntingly plaintive vocals from our man Justin John Smith that synch up rather nicely with the prevailing disquiet. You can check it out below, and definitely stay tuned for new Aircraft material incoming this year.

11 Acts to Catch at Trimania 2018

The event will almost overwhelm your senses, with artists, poets, musicians, and DJs performing in various rooms and  corners throughout the six stories of the building. With that, here are 11 musical performances we suggest checking out Saturday night. 8pm Hop Hop @ Insight International (Suite 556) Experimental hip hop artist Jaz Frasier performs under the moniker Hop Hop to deliver smart lyrics with abstract instrumentals Scratch by Hop Hop 9pm Little Cake @ First Floor Stage Avant garde multi-instrumentalist and front woman Little Cake dips her toe into a variety of genres and styles to produce an undoubtedly commanding performance.[...]

Tonight: Aircraft

Tonight Aircraft, First Ward and Velvet Bethany will join together to put on what is sure to be a show for the ages at The 9th Ward, the basement bar attached to the multi-use facility Babeville. This venue lies in the center of the theater district in Buffalo, at 341 Delaware Ave. Aircraft will be prepared to unveil their top-level energy as well as a masterful mix of both power and delicacy. Fellow Buffalonians First Ward will bring along their meticulous and anthemic melodies. Added onto that will be the garage rock vigor of Velvet Bethany, another locally based act. Doors are at 7pm,  Tickets are $10, 7 Gems from the Sparkling Void by Aircraft

Tonight: Delicate Steve

Nietzsche’s will play host to New Jersey indie rocker Delicate Steve tonight. It’s not an easy feat to classify Delicate Steve; his guitar lead and afrobeat-driven songs dance on the line of otherworldly in most cases, but effortlessly deliver something fresh to today’s music scene. You may have caught him when he rolled through Buffalo with Mac Demarco at the Tralf in 2014. Set to open are the space-exploring psych rockers Aircraft and Witty Tarbox (formerly Annasun).  Tickets for the show are $13 at the door, with doors opening at 9pm. 21+.

Tonight: Aircraft

Wednesday Buffalo News restaurant reviewer Andrew Galarneau delivered a terrific article summarizing the terrific bounty and potential that is the current Buffalo food scene. In addition to the still valuable classics that defined the region for generations (wings, fish fries, beef on weck), he extolled the virtues of the farm to table movement as well as the new ethnic cuisines arriving in our area thanks to the newest members of our community, and heartily encouraged local eaters to branch out and support these new efforts. It’s an amazing time to be an eater in this underdog and snake bit city, or a supporter of our local music scene, but you already knew that. Which brings me to tonight’s entertainments at Nietzsche’s featuring Aircraft, OL’ CD, and Feverbox. You already know all about Aircraft: psych rockers, blog favorites, always terrific, now featured on local TV; these guys never disappoint. OL’ CD are pleasingly skeezy[...]

Top 20 Buffalo Tracks: 10-1

It’s that time of year again, where we re-think and dissect every local song that we’ve come across organically or via submission. This is our fourth year counting down our top songs and this year, like every other year, has been difficult to whittle down. Like we always remind people, this list is subjective and not the end-all be all. Earlier this week we posted our five close calls and our first half of the top 20.  I am sure there are amazing local songs that aren’t on our radar, but from what we have heard, we as a group have determined below are the blog’s favorite songs of 2015. 10. Tiny Rhymes – “Arrows” Tiny Rhymes‘ ”Arrows” is an incredibly cherishable tune. It approaches the listener with a coy but welcoming softness, making it feel like a delicate gem that only you are privy to. Atop prime musicianship, singer Sharon Mok’s[...]

Tonight: Indie Rock Office Holiday Party

Tonight at Mohawk Place hosts a local bill that’s as local and awesome as you can get– Sleepy Hahas, The Naturalists, Aircraft, and Humble Braggers. It’s like Christmas is here early! Or something like that. While these bands really don’t need much of an introduction, we’ll do it anyway. Sleepy Hahas have undergone a couple of lineup changes in the past year, and are poised for the release of a new album on the heels of the “Deep River” single, which has a very cool video to go along with it. The Naturalists are riding high right now on the local attention that they’ve been getting from their latest EP, Home Honey, I’m Hi. If you like grunge, or pizza, give them a listen. (They really like pizza.) Psych garage rock group Aircraft is up next. Their most recent release being an EP, 7 Gems From The Sparkling Void. And[...]

Sixties Future EP Release Party at Nietzsche’s (11/20/15)

Those in attendance on Friday night’s show at Nietzsche’s were treated to what I am probably going to have to call my favorite locals only show of the year. Cooler kicked the night off right, and with only a few shows under their belt, they played an incredible set, sounding like they’ve been at it for years. Rochester natives Skirts then took the stage for a rare Buffalo show and got the crowd’s feet moving, followed by a great set by Buffalo psych freakers Aircraft, hot off a new EP released on Admirable Traits Records. Sixties Future reminded the Buffalo audience that they mean business, ripping through tracks off of their new EP, also out on Admirable Traits. Check out some shots from the show below, and click here for a full gallery. Cooler  Skirts Aircraft Sixties Future

Tonight: Sixties Future EP Release Party

After stoking serious interest about town with some impressive shows at the Mohawk Place this summer and fall, not to mention at Dreamland opening for Made Violent’s last local show before their UK tour with Wolf Alice and Drenge, Buffalo’s next big band, Sixties Future will be celebrating the release of their highly anticipated debut EP tonight at Nietzsche’s. If that wasn’t enough, the release party also features from newbie emo/grunge locals Cooler, the soaring beach punks of Rochester’s Skirts, and the always excellent Aircraft. For my part, I don’t think I’ll ever forget that first time seeing Sixties Future at Mohawk this past summer, watching these guys unload a pleasing and distinctly Rust Belt tinged brand of American rock with notes of Springsteen and The National, and exchanging incredulous looks with fellow staffers Brendan O’Connor and Ron Walczyk while Mike Moretti stood at the back smiling beatifically like a happy papa.[...]

Tonight: Aircraft

Buffalo’s heady psych pop outfit Aircraft will return to Mohawk Place’s stage tonight as the group continues to tour in support of its latest record, the Admirable Traits released 7 Gems From the Sparkling Void. With a healthy dose of surf and space rock, the album continues to raise the ceiling of one of the city’s most cherished and promising acts. Those who have yet to catch the band live will be #blessed tonight with some fantastic harmonies and exhilarating musicianship. Joining Aircraft tonight will be rising Rust Belt post-rockers Tomoreaux and sardonic slackers Difficult Night, both of which are set to release a new album over the next couple months. Rounding out the bill will be the debut local performance from Albany’s dark shoegazers, Slowshine. Doors open at Mohawk Place this evening at 8pm with a cover of $5.
