Tonight: The Coathangers

Tonight, Atlanta punk rockers The Coathangers will be hitting up The Tralf. Joining the Suicide Squeeze Records group will be Buffalo native’s honey COMA. Together, it should make for an evening of heavy hitting hard rock. The Coathangers are known for having an irreverent playfulness to their songwriting. They combine that with a classic minimalist garage punk sound, reminiscent of some of the earliest female punk acts, while still having a foot in the modern indie sphere. The group is coming off the release of their 2016 full length Nosebleed Weekend, which landed on Paste Magazine’s 50 Best Albums of 2016 year end list. Openers honey COMA are a local supergroup, comprised of Mallwalkers’ Norelle Christiani, Humble Braggers’ Tom Burtless and Bryan Johnson & the Family’s Bryan Johnson. Coca-Cola Death Squad, the Buffalo-bred, St Louis-based brainchild of percussionist Cameron Rogers, makes a homecoming appearance at Sugar City tonight. The unique musical project, which harnesses the prowess of two drummers simultaneously, ditches standard time signatures for highly-textured polyrhythms, beats, and sounds. Equal parts mathy, noisy, and downright shamanistic, the drum duo is touring in support of its newest release Brain Power II, which melds all that aforementioned madness into a concise 7 tracks. Tonight Canadian New Wavers Operators make a stop in Buffalo with blog favorites Humble Braggers for a night of synthed out electronic bliss and tasteful ass shaking. One of the many projects Dan (Wolf Parade, Divine Fits) Boeckner has going at any given moment, Operators released their terrific debut Blue Wave last year. Recorded in “a vintage barn in the middle of nowhere” of Southern Ontario, it’s a terrific slice of smart 80’s New Wave pop with an up to the minute sensibility that speaks to our immediate times with songs like “Mission Creep” and “Bring Me The Head.” Really, with the bombs falling in the Middle East and quite possibly North Korea by the time this post gets published, Operators couldn’t have come at a better time. Meanwhile, local openers Humble Braggers have had a busy few months, playing shows in Fredtown, Rochester, and the city in support of their fine debut[...]

The band is celebrated as an angst-ridden, emo alt-rock ray of hope for the Western NY music scene, honing in on an organic, authentic sound that’s often hard to come by. The trio holds true to the ideal of producing genuine, soul-bearing music for anyone willing to listen, and their hardworking, grassroots mentality shows. With a sound similar to The Used, Brand New, and The Wonder Years, The Traditional pride themselves on having many influences but holding true to their very own unique sound. Tonight: Decorum

Brooklyn’s three piece outfit Decorum takes a hold of the post-punk revitalization movement and makes it their own. The often jangly, spindly guitars that are found throughout the genre are vacant, as Decorum consists of a dual bass set-up and drums. Taking the various flavors the low end has in post-punk and playing both at the same time creates atmospheric textures while still staying true to the genre. Swirling around, in almost a cyclical nature Decorum incorporates a dark, moody sound that’s strung out and made thin, wisp like, on top of which are early shoegaze, breath-like vocals. Supporting Decorum  at Dreamland will be locals, Orations, who are just coming off their stellar post-punk LP, Wych Elm, along with Slow Mutants who always seem to bring a ton of energy to their shows, and post-punk trio, The Patterns. This is a post-punk night not to miss. Show at 7pm. $6 to[...]

Tonight: Rock A Mile In Her Shoes

Tonight one of the best fundraisers in Buffalo returns as Babeville once again hosts the 3rd Annual Rock A Mile In Her Shoes show featuring The Slums, Morbs, Erica Wolfing, Del Paxton, and M.A.G.S.. Tonight: Advance Base

Two Orindal Records label mates are slated to hit Buffalo tonight. Advance Base and Karima Walker both bring their own unique brands of lo-fi pop to Mohawk Place. Joining them will be two local solo acts, Lara Buckley and Matt Script. Headlining the show is Chicago-based act Advance Base, the solo project of former Casiotone for the Painfully Alone member Owen Ashworth. Still riding the wave of his well-received record Nephew in the Wild, Ashworth’s sound is layered an array of electronic keyboards, employing minimalist arrangements that pair well with his heavy-hearted, soul-baring lyricism. Tucson singer-songwriter Karima Walker offers up an ambient and experimental kind of folk music, combining traditional folk melodies with tape loops and samples. Sound collage artist Lara Buckley opens the show, followed by loop-machine singer-songwriter Matt Script. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Tonight: Moon Bounce

The music of Philadelphia-based producer Corey Regensburg aka Moon Bounce is a forward-thinking take on pop, combining funky synths with bombastic percussion and weighty, soulful vocals. Self-described as “mutant pop”, the infectious sound features samples as well as varied instrumentation including violin and saxophone. With heavy, elastic sounding bass reminiscent of Kaytranada and vivid melodies, the artist’s latest album, Clean House, is a consistently fresh-sounding release that references club music while maintaining an eccentric, unpredictable pop form. Tonight, Moon Bounce will perform at Dreamland with support from New Jersey artist Ehiorobo, whose experimental pop productions are as soulful as they are inventive with smooth vocals interspersed with spoken word portions. The pair recently collaborated on the single “Lungs” in anticipation of their joint U.S. tour. Kicking things off are Buffalo producer Yung Painkiller and producer/vocalist Medusa. Music starts at 8pm. $5 donation.
