GØGGS – s/t

GØGGS is a fairly recent project primarily made up of Ty Segall, Ex-Cult frontman Chris Shaw, and Charles Moothart. As we have seen with FUZZ, when Ty and Charles Moothart collaborate they can make some great riff-centric jams. Also, with Chris Shaw’s claim to fame being the lead singer of hardcore band, Ex-Cult and guest spots from Mikal Cronin, Cory Hanson of Wand, and Denee Petracek of VIAL I figured it’d be safe to say this album would make for a solid effort. This self-titled album will be a definite hit with those who love eighties hardcore. It’s not to say it’s straight eighties hardcore worship like Ex-Cult is, and I think there’s something for a lot of different music fans here. There’s some sharp guitar work from Ty that’s a mirror of the style he used in his last project, Emotional Mugger, as well as Charles Moothart as they[...]

DUDES share debut record Stay Home PT 2

Stay Home PT 2 is the debut from the new punk garage band DUDES. DUDES are exactly what you want out of a garage band nowadays, showing off a solid display of nice riffs played at a fast pace mixed with creative use of added effects, but without overdoing it. The band keeps garage rock as it should be: raw, fuzzy, and abrasive. The singer/guitarist plays some nice psychedelic punk riffs with the always pleasing wah/fuzz effect combo. The vocalist shows an impressive range where songs can be compared to groups from Thee Oh Sees to Pissed Jeans. Tracks like “Sun in your eyes” go from a nice slow groove to fast paced as the song progressives making some super sick psychedelic punk jams. The band says it is heavily influenced by Ty Segall, the Spits, and local group Plates. The quality drum work shows influences from stoner metal band Torche The drumming is clearly a priority for[...]

Parquet Courts – Human Performance

Parquet Courts is one of the rare rock’n rolls bands in the last couple of years to manage a consistent number of good releases in a short period of time. Coming from Brooklyn, they manage a good work ethic and have put out some actually thought-provoking music that isn’t too pretentious. When Parquet Courts first gained traction with their release of album Light Up Gold, it was apparent that this band was special. The quartet has succeeded by making good music with a genuine message that is unfortunately not commonly seen with many bands when they gain any sort of commercial success. The lyrics Human Performance are poetic and that’s what is one of the many polarizing aspects of the band. The intro track “Already Dead” contains is good preparation for what is to come as it transitions into a small spoken word monologue reminding you to just relax wherever you are[...]

Iggy Pop – Post Pop Depression

Releasing a rock and roll album at 68 years old is no easy task as the genre is almost synonymous with youthful energy. When you are one of rock’s most legendary icons does that mean you can still release music that was up to par with your early material? That’s a question in which will be debated endlessly, but I can safely say that Mr. Pop still has the weirdness that we know and love along with some fresh creative energy. Pop brings a flavor that isn’t youthful energy, but is no doubt rock n roll. On the icon’s latest effort, Post-Pop Depression, the vocals bring about a sound reminiscent with the likes of Johnny Cash’s sound when he was around the age Pop is now with the added crudeness that we are familiar with when it comes to Iggy Pop. This is certainly not to say that Post-Pop Depression lacks[...]

DIIV – Is the Is Are

DIIV has acquired quite the reputation among independent music fans over the last couple of years. For both their music and through offstage controversies, like when the bassist of the band, David Ruben Perez, was accused of making bigoted statements on the image board 4Chan. Not to mention since the release of their last album, Oshin, there have been various accusations of singer Zachary Cole Smith and his girlfriend, Sky Ferreira, of being addicted to heroin after their drug-related arrest in 2013. This is the first full-length release from DIIV in four years after receiving mostly positive reviews on their debut. All this aside, Is the Is Are is a double LP clocking in at a little over an hour long, which sort makes it justifiable to the fans who have been patiently awaiting new material from the band. This album is not drastically different from DIIV’s first release, but[...]

The Pooches – Heart Attack EP

The Pooches are an up-and-coming indie band hailing from Glasgow and signed to Philadelphia-based indie label, Lame-O Records. The band’s latest release, Heart Attack EP, is modern indie-surf pop at its best, coming across like the softer albeit friendlier little brother to the band Wavves. Heart Attack’s strongest suit is found in creating some relaxing surf riffs and they nail that atmosphere that so many “surf” bands fail to accomplish as of late. Songs on this EP seem as though they were written on a hot summer’s day, as the sunny songs are a quick sampling that includes four songs that average at about 2 minutes each. If you like what you hear on the first track, then you’re going to like the whole thing because there’s not a ton of variation in the songs. The album is effective in establishing a specific sound that has some promising aspects. The soft and relaxing[...]

Ty Segall – Emotional Mugger

Ty Segall is arguably one of the most hardworking artists in music right now, and he’s only improving with an increasing catalog of releases and side-projects. The guy has kept good company since he started making music in his early years with the likes of Mikal Cronin and King Tuff whom are both featured on the new project titled Emotional Mugger. The band also features members from the band Wand, Corey Hanson and Evan Burrows, making The Muggers somewhat of an all-star lineup. If you’re familiar with Ty’s work you know his projects are usually reliant upon some heavy guitar riffs, and show the music of those he’s been influenced by such as The Gories, The Mummies, Alice Cooper, The Cramps, and Black Sabbath to name a few. Simply put, Ty Segall makes rock n’ roll music for people who appreciate its history. Emotional Mugger is definitely a bit more experimental and chaotic than his previous records. The guitars often sound frenzied[...]

Tonight: Night Slaves

You may be living under a rock if you aren’t aware of the show that every local media outlet is talking about – Night Slaves release show at Mohawk Place. After much anticipation, the industrial duo, comprising of Johnny Toohill (JOHNS, Alpha Hopper) and David Kane (Them Jazzbeards) is set to release their self-titled debut six-song cassette via Bad Drone Media. Night Slaves makes some dirty industrial pop that sounds like it came out of a grimy basement (in the best way possible). This dark electronica is flavored with a psychedelic sound that has a pretty blatant punk influence. Toohill and Kane deliver on their own name, bringing out a specific yet dark atmosphere. The music is refreshingly produced in the provocative spirit of the avant-grade, and intensely immersive. Also on the bill are locals CAGES, VWLS, and Malaria control, with Flatsitter taking care of the atmosphere. Show starts at[...]
