Just Announced: buffaBLOG Presents Halloween w/ Soul Patch

buffaBLOG is pumped to announce our second annual Halloween party, teaming up once again with local 90’s alt-rock cover band, Soul Patch, and buzzing indie rock newcomers, Sixties Future, on Friday, October 30th at Mohawk Place. Expect a riotous night filled with zany costumes, debauchery, and losing your voice screaming along with some of the very best(?) songs from two decades ago. Pre-sale tickets can currently purchased here, and it might be a good idea to grab one ahead of time: last year’s Hamlin House party sold out, so don’t sleep on this.

Tonight: Circuit des Yuex

Help ease in a busy Saturday here in Buffalo by paying a visit to Dreamland and spending the evening with Haley Fohr’s experimental folk project, Circuit des Yeux. The Thrill Jockey recording artist and NPR favorite combines electronic minimalism with organic strings, woodwinds, and percussion for a meditative yet challenging style of folk that fans of Chealsea Wolf and Zola Jesus should be drawn to. Expect the Indiana native to tackle selections from her well received and powerful 2015 album In Plain Speech. Joining Fohr this evening will be the rather busy Cages. The avant-garde folk outfit has had a busy summer, including performances at the Burchfield Penny and tomorrow’s Music is Art festival on the Sugar City stage. The evening’s set should be the proper format to catch the act: intimate and intense. Music begins tonight at 8pm with a suggested donation of $10.

Buffalo Sex Change’s Phil Pierce Releases KDNYLUV Compilation

Musicians from Rochester and beyond are coming together to help a family member of one of their own. Glori Alexandar, the sister of Buffalo Sex Change guitarist/co-vocalist Phil Pierce, recently underwent a successful kidney transplant this past weekend. While she is recovering well from the surgery, Glori still has a long and unfortunately expensive road ahead of her. In order to help with the mounting medical bills, her brother Phil has curated a 16 track benefit compilation in hopes to aid with the costs. The compilation features tracks, many which were previously unreleased, from some of Rochester’s top acts in Pleistocene, Howlo, Auld Lang Syne, MD Woods, Passive Aggressives Anonymous, and more, in addition to contributions from BSXC buddy Shana Falana, Buffalo native and Asthmatic Kitty artist DM Stith, and other acts from around New York State. Dave Drago of 1809 Studios, as well as Pleistocene’s Stephen Roessner, handled the[...]

Cantelope Drops 2-Track for ours

Lo-fi Rochester act Cantelope, which features Doorway Talkers’ Hannah Weidner on drums, released a couple new tunes onto bandcamp earlier this week. The fuzzy for ours is a short, two song EP that joins a small but growing digital catalog from young trio. The EP’s lead track, “R’N’R P Hole,” is a solid cut of Yuck inspired jangle rock. The three-piece will kick off a five date fall tour on Saturday, October 3rd in Fulton, NY with Utica’s still buzzing Comfy. The short outing will take Cantelope from Central NY to a few gigs down south. In the mean time, check out “R’N’R P Hole” below. for ours by CANTELOPE

Del Paxton Films Session with 1809 Studios

While in Rochester earlier this summer for a gig, Buffalo based indiemo trio and still fresh Topshelf Records signees Del Paxton paid a visit to Macedon’s 1809 Studios to record session with studio engineer Dave Drago and videographer Jon Lewis. The three piece broke out the previously unreleased, from the vaults “Loose Leaf” for its installment to the ever growing series. The addition of the track to the band’s growing digital repertoire continues to push Del Paxton to the forefront of Western New York’s burgeoning music scene while eager fans await a proper LP. Watch the clip below and keep an eye out for the trademark McClure “O-Face” at the 1:06 mark.

Genesee Live Premieres Latest Session feat. Secret Pizza

After teasing a full fall of new session clips, Rochester’s Genesee Live made good on its promise yesterday with the release of its 26th installment, this time featuring the grungy post-rock quartet, Secret Pizza. After a summer that saw the group take a short tour of the North East and finish up its soon-to-be-released debut LP with Pleistocene’s Stephen Roessner, the busy band managed to fit in a recording session at Rettner Hall on the campus of the University of Rochester. Check out the full clip below and for past sessions, you can catch up at Genesee Live’s Youtube page.

Parade Chic Shares First Single from One and Only Secret Dream

Local chamber pop outfit Parade Chic shared the lead single from the group’s upcoming debut LP, One and Only Secret Dream, earlier this morning. Titled “New Lines,” the neo-psych number features a bouncy, retro pop melody along with new wavey keys and gentle yet nervy guitars backing Colin Griffin’s lead vocals (think Stuart Murdoch meets Alex Berkley). Fans of Belle and Sebastian, the cassette culture movement, and even Ariel Pink should give a song a spin. Keep an eye out for One and Only Secret Dream sometime this fall (we think), and in the mean time, listen to “New Lines” below. New Lines by Parade Chic

Brimstone Blondes Release “Do U Wanna Make-Out?” Music Video

Brimstone Blondes, the now-defunct former high school turned collegiate all-stars, resurfaced out of nowhere last last week with the music video for the track “Do U Wanna Make-Out?,” a cut from the band’s 2014 release AGE OF CONSENT. The quartet had a very busy start of 2015, embarking on an ambitious multi-city tour and picking up weekend dates and festivals well into the spring. The video for “Do U Wanna Make-Out?” is spliced between two realities – one is the backyard goofiness of the Buffalo suburbs featuring the most recent lineup, complete with synchronized swimming, rooftop guitar playing, and numerous costumes. The other shows snippets of lead man Matthew Danger Lippman’s more psychedelic side, featuring a longer-haired, makeup-clad, seen-a-lot-of-shit version of himself. Watch the clip below, and make sure to follow the Blondes on FB for any further surprise announcements.

Little Cake Begins Song-a-Day September Project

Following in the foot steps of Alex Berkley and M-A, Little Cake, Radarada vocalist and Jack Toft partner in crime, has begun her own song-a-day project, releasing a new track for every day of the month of September. With three songs already in the bag, the project appears to be rather eclectic, with songs styles ranging from layered, neo soul and R&B to lo-fi kooky observational sing songs Today’s experimental track, “Pole Dance Students,” is and ode to well, new students to dancing on poles. The track is best served with the bass turned up. You can follow the daily progress over at Little Cake’s soundcloud page here. In the mean time, check out her day three song below.

Kharlos Shares First Single from Upcoming Cassette

Fuzzy slime garage trio Kharlos is set to release its debut EP/cassette Don’t Think About Dying at My Party on Saturday, September 12th. Featuring members of Merchants, ronaldraygun, and Space Wolves, the three-piece has kept a pretty low key internet presence, quietly dropping a debut track early this summer, up until now. Today, the group has shared the first single from the forthcoming cassette, set to be released by local tape label, More Power Tapes. “Work” sounds like the daylight peaking in the windows of a mildew-y basement. Grimy yet peppy, fans of Fidlar or the Black Lips should dig the tune. Look for a music video for the single to premiere sometime next week. The trio will be celebrating the release of Don’t Think About Dying at My Party at Dreamland along with Sixties Future, Dante Velour, and (redacted). Admission is free and a tapped keg will be waiting for you. In the mean time, check out[...]

Songs of the Summer: Staff Picks

As I type this intro, students have returned to campus, coming in and out of my office at UB North, and with Labor Day weekend upon us, normally the last gasp of summer here in Buffalo, the seasons are about to change for all things pumpkin spice, despite what this recent humidity says. But before we turn the page on another great summer in Buffalo, the blog staff compiled a list of the songs that helped shape the season not only our office, but the city as well. Check out our staff picks below. Ronald Walczyk Mac DeMarco – “The Way You’d Love Her” Not many artists can conjure carefree summer vibes quite like Mac DeMarco can. His latest effort, Another One, is mostly a handful of swaying lully-love songs, with a few standout tracks. One of those standout tracks, album opener and premiere single “The Way You’d Love Her,” took[...]

Tonight: Radarada

The OTHER Curly’s is set to host the laid back hip hop group Radarada this evening in the venue’s West Side basement. The collective has made quite an impression since its debut LP First Edition dropped late last spring, boasting some of the city’s finest lyricists in Toomy Too, Wza, and Little Cake. Joining the Rada crew tonight will be neo R&B act Hop Hop, the newish project from Mallwalkers and Mink vocalist Jaz Frazier, in addition to the regrouped indie rock act the Etchings and dreamy Boston slackers Harmoos. Music is set to kick off sometime around 7pm with doors opening around 6pm. Bring a few bucks to cover the touring act, and if you have find yourself at the Blasdell Curly’s later on, you took a wrong turn. First Edition by RADARADA

Buffalo Porchfest Again Seeks Bands, Porches

Registration is now open for the fall installment of the Elmwood Village Association’s Buffalo Porchfest, set to go down on Saturday, October 3rd. For those new to bi-annual festival, the concept is pretty simple: a band or bands play on an assigned porch somewhere in the Elmwood Village, while people mosey the neighborhood to catch sets of their choice. Music normally runs from 12pm to 5pm and weather permitting, its a pretty fun excuse to kill an afternoon by roaming around the village and slightly beyond. Sadly, last year’s weather did not cooperate, forcing some porch hosts to resort to other measures to keep their show going… Porchfest organizers are currently accepting registration applications from porch owners, bands, and/or volunteers. If you wish to be any of the above, you can sign up here. Registration closes on September 14th.

Night Slaves Share Demo Track “Into the Nowhere”

Earlier this spring, Night Slaves, a new industrial duo featuring John Toohill (JOHNS, Alpha Hopper) and Dave Kane (Them Jazzbeards), shared the unnerving first track from a soon-to-be released demo. Now, with summer almost over, the pair has quietly released a second track from the demo upon bandcamp, the dark yet strangely soothing “Into the Nowhere.” Night Slaves are still prepping said demo, but hopes to have it ready to go this fall with a physical cassette release as well as a live performance and a FLATSITTER produced music video. Keep an eye out for the duo’s fall performance and release date, and in the mean time, check out “Into the Nowhere” below. Into the Nowhere by Night Slaves
