PUP at Studio at Waiting Room (05/18/17)

Well, it was bound to happen eventually. After making their Buffalo debut at the Studio in 2014 and playing there once a year since, they finally sold it out. Following the release of their latest LP, The Dream is Over,  the Toronto pop punk four piece have steadily been gaining popularity, and at that showed at their performance.  Going as down as one of the more insane crowds I’ve seen at the Waiting Room, the packed house didn’t slow down for a minute over the course of the bands hour long set.   The show was opened with an awesome set by Prawn, who played with PUP the last time they were in Buffalo as well.   Check out some photos from the insane night below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Made Violent at Studio at Waiting Room (5/5/17)

Buffalo’s own rock ‘n’ roll rebels Made Violent played a blistering hometown show at the Studio at Waiting Room on May 5th, whipping the crowd into a fierce frenzy. With a seven-inch single soon to be released and a new album fully recorded, Made Violent are making moves, expanding their international reach to an even wider audience hungry for pure, uncut rock. Joining the fray that evening were Rustbelt roots-rockers Sixties Future, preparing a full length of their own, and indie punks Ugly Sun, who recently finished an EP. Check out the photos below! Acid Dad at Studio at Waiting Room (4/2/17)

On April 2nd, New York City’s Acid Dad brought the seductive swagger of their gritty garage rock sound to the Studio at Waiting Room for a night of debauchery. Along for the ride were Brooklyn’s Honduras, who kept the spirit of ’77 alive with their unbridled take on downtown punk, earning their stripes from rock ’n’ roll’s true believers. Representing Buffalo’s local scene that evening,  Deadwolf’s psychedelic stomp and Ugly Sun’s bare-knuckle riffs set the stage for the main event. Check out the photos below. AJJ at the Studio at Waiting Room (11/05/16)

Earlier this month,  Andrew Jackson Jihad played their first show in Buffalo since their name change, and it was packed.  On tour in support of their new album, The Bible 2, the folk punk veterans played a career spanning set to a full house at the Studio at Waiting Room.   They split the set between a full band set and a stripped down two piece set, performing cuts from their new album, among many others.  AJJ brought along Chris Farren and Diners as openers, and they both killed it as well.  Check out some photos from the show below, and click HERE for a full gallery. Every Time I Die at the Studio at Waiting Room (9/17/16)

If you’re from Buffalo and haven’t at least heard of Every Time I Die, there’s something wrong with you. The five piece has built a huge following in Buffalo and beyond over the years, but their hometown shows are always something special, usually on the brink of pure insanity. On September 23rd, the band will be releasing their eighth studio album, Low Teens, and the band had a surprise in store for their fans last Saturday.  Originally planned as a listening party of the new album, the group came together last minute to treat Buffalo to something special, a performance of their new record front to back, before anyone else in the world had heard it, along with an encore with some of the classics. Luckily, blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor, was able to make it in with his camera and capture some of the madness that is a hometown Every[...]

This past Friday, UK pop punk act Basement made their way back to Buffalo for an incredible show the Connecticut 4 piece Ovlov, and Brooklyn indie act Eskimeaux. This was Basement’s first time back in Buffalo since they played the old Sugar City, on their first ever US tour.  Buffalo showed them a great time, and every band that played was stellar.  Check out some shots from the night below, and click here for a full gallery. Ovlov Eskimeaux Basement Basement Setlist “Whole” “Aquasun” “Fading” “Bad Apple” “Spoiled” “For You The Moon” “Earl Grey” “Brother’s Keeper” “Oversized” “Yoke” “Crickets Throw Their Voice” “Promise Everything” “Pine” “Covet”

Tonight: Basement

You might want to get down to the Studio at Waiting room tonight.  UK pop punk / alt /emo act Basement is making their triumphant return to our fine city tonight, fresh off the release of a new record, titled Promise Everything.  On tour with Basement is New York indie act, Eskimeaux, and the recently reunited Ovlov. If you caught Eskimeaux at Sugar City last year, you should know that Eskimeaux alone is worth the price of a ticket.  This is a gig you’re not going to want to miss. Doors open for the show at 6:30pm, with a showtime of 7:30pm. Tickets are $19 at the door, which is a small price to pay for this stacked bill.

Tonight: PUP

The Studio at the Waiting Room is about to have one of the most insane live shows of 2016 in early February.  Since the release of their self-titled debut in 2014,  the band has played both headlining and supporting sets in Buffalo multiple times.  Even at their first show, I was surprised by the amount of audience participation. By the end of the set the lead singer of PUP even crowd surfing while covering “Sabatoge” by the Beastie Boys. Last December,  PUP played a set in their hometown of Toronto that I will never forget. It was easily one of my favorite sets I saw ANY band play that year.  The energy that this band is able to play within the crowd they play for is unlike anything I’ve seen. I’m crossing my fingers that tonight will be no different. Kicking the night off will be local indie tinged post hardcore[...]

Tonight: Darwin Deez

During their Buffalo debut at Soundlab a few years back, NYC indie pop outfit Darwin Deez must have taken a liking to Buffalo.  The band will once again return to the Waiting Room tonight, this time upstairs, in support of their newest release, Double Down.  Released this September on Lucky Stars records, Darwin and crew continue with their trend of technical yet incredibly fun sounding tunes, and will no doubt inspire the crowd to slip on their dancing shoes over the course of the night.  This band is nothing but fun live, even utilizing full ban choreographed dance moves as interludes into tracks.  On tour with Darwin Deez  is Charlie Bliss, and locals Our Modern Moloch are also on the bill. Doors and show both begin at 6:30pm, so get there on time.  For only 14 bucks at the door, you can’t go wrong. Also, check out free Live Band Karaoke[...]

Tonight: Dreamers

Tonight, The Studio at Waiting Room plays host to touring Brooklyn-based band, Dreamers, as part of their nationwide tour in support of their forthcoming album set to be released in 2016. The band’s name might ring a bell as they were in town last September in support of Atlas Genius. If you weren’t at the show (or late), then expect Dreamers’ sound to be a mix between poppy garage-rock, surfy hooks, and gritty 70’s retro vibes. Fans of The 1975, Broncho, or even Muse would be into Dreamers. Also on the bill are locals Darling Harbor, Daniel Robinson, and No Vacancy. Doors open at 6pm with a $10 cover. Tonight: Windhand

It’s gonna get heavy tonight at the Studio at the Waiting Room with Richmond-based psychedelic-metal act, Windhand, taking the stage. The band is on tour in support of their latest album, Grief’s Infernal Flower, produced by Jack Endino (Nirvana, High on Fire), which just came out on Relapse Records. Fans of Electric Wizard or Sleep would dig this rising sludge act. Also on the bill are Portland prog-metal act Danava and Swedish doom band Monolord, Doors are at 7pm with a $17 cover. Tonight: Tragedy (All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees & Beyond)

New York City glam-metal tribute band, Tragedy, will be making a stop at the Studio at Waiting Room tonight on their tour.  Equal parts 80’s Metallica, Poison, and Dethklok, the band’s hilarious takes and exploits make Tragedy one of the most entertaining  tribute bands on the market. Tragedy has expanded their initial Bee Gees centered setlist to put a metal hairband spin on pop classics of yesteryear. Not to be overlooked is Metalachi, a mariachi band that hails Satan and snorts horse tranquilizers. Doors open at 7pm with a $15 cover.

Tonight: Blueprint

World-class lyricist Blueprint is headed into the Studio at the Waiting Room to perform tonight. The Rhymesayers MC is a frequent collaborator with some of independent hip hop’s best, like producer RJD2 and rapper Illogic, as well as his high-profile labelmates Atmosphere and Aesop Rock. As expected with a Rhymesayers signee, Blueprint can rap his face off, and often does so on genre-bending production. Blueprint’s latest album King No Crown is a fusion of the soul samples and experimental sounds that have brought his projects acclaim in the past. Joining Blueprint in the show is the North Carolina veteran rapper Supastition. Best known for his 2013 single “Yada Yada” Supa’s career extends from his time as a NC battle rapper in the late 90s to his current role as an artist and social activist. Tickets are going for $10-$12, and doors are opening up at 7 pm.

Tonight: Sleepy Hahas

The Sleepy Hahas were going to move to Athens Georgia, but due to unprecedented circumstances of colossal proportions, the now trio has elected to stay in the city it calls home. To celebrate, come out to The Studio at Waiting Room later on and have 1-38 drinks with Sleepy Hahas’ keyboard player, known by most as “Drunk Phil,” before the band ignites the upstairs room with old hits and new tunes from its upcoming album From the Bottom of a Warm Lake. When asked if there was anything people should know about the show, Hahas singer Pat Butler said “to be honest I don’t even know if I’ll still be alive by Thursday night, but if I am, it’ll be a great show. People should come out. We’ve been practicing all of the time and our sound is improving.” The Hahas are joined by local acts The Soft Love, SHEDS,[...]

Tonight: Big Data

The past decade has certainly seen no shortage of underground artists melding electro-rock, psychedelic rock, alt-dance and synthpop – from MGMT to Ratatat to alt-J and beyond. But Big Data – a relatively new project helmed by Brooklyn DJ Alan Wilkis – displays enough intensity and virtuosity to stand apart, if not above, many of its peers in such a crowded field. Big Data’s music is at turns heady and danceable, abrasive and poppy, upbeat and frighteningly paranoid. His debut, 2.0, released this March, features vocal appearances ranging from Rivers Cuomo to Rochester indie-rockers Joywave to indie-pop artists the world around, from Kimbra to Twin Shadow. But their lyrics are pretty universally manic – Cuomo croons about Edward Snowden on the blaring noise-pop of “Snowed In;” White Sea sings about a relentless lover over Europop synths on “The Business of Emotion;” and on the bass-heavy debut single, “Dangerous” (which peaked[...]
