Tonight: Lemuria

There are some big things happening in Buffalo tonight, but its pretty clear that Mohawk Place will be the place to be. Lemuria will be making their way to town, but not to perform just any show, they are touring on a ten year anniversary deluxe edition of their fantastic LP, Get Better, which they will be performing front to back, as well as some other cuts. While the the band have since moved away to different parts of the US, the original members spent their time growing as a band playing shows locally in Buffalo. Get Better definitely served as a defining record to many Buffalonians that were active within the music scene when it was released.  Let’s hope they all roll out to Mohawk and show Lemuria some love. Opening show will be touring act Cayetana from Philadelphia, and the one and only Mikey Erg, of the Ergs, will be kicking the night[...]

Tonight: No Parents

Tonight Mohawk Place promises one of the season’s funnest shows as Buffalo hosts a visit from West Coast punks, No Parents and White Fang. While both bands have their own unique charms, there is a certain like-mindedness in their manic energy and their bizarre and sly tongue-in-cheek lyrics. White Fang is a band that should remind you of a lot of other recent wonderful lo-fi west coast punk bands (Wavves, Fidlar) but still an entirely winning and infectious. No Parents maybe the slightly more bold of the two, at times almost reminding me of a youthful American answer to Mclusky. Whichever band you love though, if they can transfer their energy to the live stage, should be an absolute barn-burner of a show. Also on the bill are local garage rock act, The Pepperoni Boys. Doors at Mohawk Place start at 8pm with a $10 cover.

Tonight: The Leones

Tonight Buffalo’s Leones celebrate the release of their Halloween album Ghost In The City at the Mohawk with Twin Speak, Orations, and Award Show. Bold and ambitious, Ghost In The City features excellent atmosphere, vocals reminiscent of Richard Ashcroft, and some serious class. Utica psychedelic doom rockers Twin Speak will opening the show with Buffalo goth romantics Orations, Award Show, a lo-fi acoustic bedroom folk project from Jesse Kaufman and Nate Ward, and 80’s horror movies on VHS in between sets. The bands request donations of Halloween masks and child friendly costumes to benefit underprivileged children through the NPO Gateway Longview, which serves 3600 children throughout Western New York. Doors are 7:30pm, show starts at 8pm, and cover is $5. Fire Walk With Me by The Leonesr

Today: Such Gold

This afternoon Rochester-based punk act, Such Gold, will be playing a super early matinee show at Mohawk Place. The band has become a staple of the pop-punk scene over the past seven years, most recently re-releasing their cherished 2009 introduction, Pedestals. Fans of Millencolin, Four Years Strong, and Polar Bear Club should definitely make afternoon plans.  Also on the bill is local support from the always angular Alleys and emo act Subtle Words along with retro-rock Canadians Big School.  Doors are are 4pm and there is a $10 cover. Don’t put this one off because it ends by 8pm, just in time for NIght Slaves’ album release.

Tonight: Bethlehem Steel

The Buffalo-turned-Brooklyn based Bethlehem Steel is already five dates into their fall tour with fellow Brooklynites, Painted Zeros. Tonight’s show at Mohawk Place makes an anticipated sixth. After getting some well deserved praise and coverage from NPR following their SXSW performance earlier this year, the trio has been If you’ve never heard Bethlehem Steel before, a fresh listen introduces you to piercing melodies and a whole lot of fuzz. Frontwoman Rebecca Ryskalczyk’s voice carries a hauntingly somber tone to it that manages to still be bright and hopeful at the same time. If you dig a little deeper into the lyrical content, you become privy to the flip-side of their up-beat energy. The lyrics are equally as haunting. On “Yeah, I’m Okay With My Shit Life”, the last tune of their 6-song album Docking, Ryskalczyk sings, “…If I could breathe under water / I would stay there forever / to[...]

Just Announced: Lazlo Hollyfeld & Friends Play LCD Soundsystem

It’s never too early to plan for Halloween. With Every Time I Die set to hit the road for the spooky season, we had to put our annual Soul Patch Halloween bash on hold for the year and look elsewhere for our yearly rager. In comes Lazlo Hollyfeld. The long time experimental rockers, fresh off tackling Radiohead’s In Rainbows and then some this spring and summer, will next take on the catalog of DFA heavyweights LCD Soundsystem on Friday, October 28th at Mohawk Place. The legendary dance-punk group triumphantly returned to the festival stages this year, and with a new album in the works, it seemed hitting for the Buffalo band to dive into James Murphy and crew’s collection of tracks. Joining the Lazlo crew will be tribute band Girl Jeans. Led by Humble Braggers’ Tom Burtless, the fresh-to-the-scene cover group will cover all of your favorite emo/screamo/scenester hits of the past.[...]

Tonight: The Mystery Lights

Fans of Daptone Records know that whatever the label is putting out, whether it’s Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, Antibalas, Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens, or The Budos Band, it’s going to sound instantly classic but also have a sense of immediacy that says “we’re here, you’re hear, and this is right now.” Now the Bushwick ,Brooklyn soul empire is expanding to include straight up rock music with their new WICK Records imprint, and their first band The Mystery Lights will be making their Buffalo debut tonight at the Mohawk Place. Cranking an insurgent brand of rock that channels The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, and The Black Angels, the Salinas, California by way of Queens outfit will be in town to promote the eponymous debut album, released in June. Opening the show will be the recently reformed The Good, the city’s first New Wave band, along with heavy duty garage rockers The Pepperoni Boys,[...]

Tonight: The Naturalists

The Naturalists have one of the most distinct sounds out there. In the ten or so months since their 6-song EP release, Home Honey, I’m Hi, the band hasn’t slept on expanding and improving that sound, especially with the addition of a second guitarist (Jimmy Dimartino) and two shiny new singles released earlier today. “Wicked Dreams” and “Grown Up” are undoubtedly branded with The Naturalists’ familiar throwback-grunge  sound. Both tracks are as rambunctious as ever, yet totally refined in tone and melody. Not to mention, the new material is just downright fun to listen to. It’s hard to argue with something so amiable. On “Grown Up” vocalist Craig Perno sings about subject matter most of us can relate to — the innate fears and confusions of growing older (grow up and hold back / no sleep ’til we’re dead / making sense of dreaming dementia / make me a witness,[...]

Tonight: Yonatan Gat

Yonatan Gat, former guitarist to traveling psych-band, Monotonix, brings his slick licks to Mohawk Place tonight for surely what will be a mind-melting performance. Since Monotonix’s break-up at the tail end of 2011, Gat went solo, evolving his sound from heavy guitar riffs a la Led Zeppelin to more intricate, jazzy psych vibes similar to a playful Mars Volta. Gat’s work is incredibly awe-inspiring, to quote SPIN  “…cults have been formed over less.” Without a doubt, this is well worth heading downtown on a Tuesday night. Also on the bill are local punkers Slow Cooker and Radiation Risks, along with returning psych-folk act via Austin, Calliope Musicals. Doors are at 7pm and there is an $8 cover.

Tonight: Moving Units

LA-based dance punk veterans, Moving Units, will be playing Mohawk Place tonight, undoubtedly waking up Buffalo on a fairly sleepy Monday night. If you are a fan of The Faint or New Order, then you should probably head down to the ‘Hawk Tonight. Also on the bill are fellow LA-ians, Visions, who are currently teaming up with Burger Records to release their forthcoming album. Doors open at 8pm with a $10 cover.

Tonight: Mutual Friends

Dreamy ghostrockers The Leones are haunting their way into town tonight, bolstered by an all-star cast of openers. One of these openers happens to be Mutual Friends (the new project from Nelson-Type’s Kevin Scoma and our favorite lake-popper Bryan Johnson), who are playing their first show this evening. It’s bound to be a good time, especially with Moody Cosmos and Coral Collapse in tow. The show starts at 8:00 tonight. See you at Mohawk Place!

Tonight: Secret Pizza

If the big crowds at Canalside ain’t your thing, or if you just want to keep the fun going well into the night, then head on down to Mohawk Place later on as Rochester’s Secret Pizza heads west to headline a stacked indie rock bill. The fuzzy four-piece, fresh off the heels of releasing its debut record Nothing Needs to Happen (one of our most recent Albums of the Week) via Dadstache Records, is on night two of its 10-day tour of the Northeast to support the album. Nothing Needs to Happen has a bit of everything: post rock, grunge, shoegaze, plus the joined forces of co-singers Phil Shaw and Gina Caliolo carrying the booming songs through heavy riffs, sneaky melodies, and plenty of distortion. The full album can and should be listened to here prior to tonight’s set. It’s pretty great. Band buddies Del Paxton will be supporting Secret Pizza, along with a[...]

Tonight: Bethlehem Steel

Following a tour van mishap that led the band to cancel its most recent hometown appearance, Brooklyn-based trio Bethlehem Steel will finally make it back to its origin city of (as their bandname may suggest) Buffalo tonight. Sharing cues from Rochester-based fuzz rock contemporaries Pleistocene, the BFF bands are the local(ish) pioneers of their crafted genres. Have a listen to a track from B-Steel’s excellent Docking EP below, released in November via Miscreant Records. Tonight’s NY-centric bill at Mohawk Place includes Bethlehem Steel, lo-fi punk locals Space is Haunted, Slowcooker, and B-Steel citymates Stringer. Get there right around 8pm to catch them all–these bands are bringing more than just volume. $7.

Tonight: A Giant Dog

Following the release of their newest album, Pile, Austin, TX based rock band, A Giant Dog will be making a stop at the Mohawk Place tonight.  On their major label debut on Merge Records, A Giant Dog finds the perfect balance of good old loud, aggressive, hard rock, but with stellar, meaningful lyrics to boot. After spinning the record a handful of times, there’s no doubt in my mind that they are going to put on a straight up boisterous live set. Kicking things off on the local side of things will be Uniform OPR and JOHNS.  Doors are set to open at 7pm with a showtime of 8pm, and it’s only five bucks.
