Tonight: Bryan Johnson and Family

BJ&FAM, boy have we missed you! After a well-deserved winter break, Buffalo’s favorite lake rockers are back to welcome in the warm April weather. This show is the latest in Yace’s string of low cost, high reward programming. Joining Bryan Johnson & co. tonight are upbeat Rochester garage act SKIRTS (whose new EP came out on Dadstache records earlier this year), the dreamy surf-poppers in the aptly named Dreambeaches, and a set from new harmony-heavy act, Feverbox. In a refreshing change of pace, tonight’s show will be happening at the Gypsy Parlor on Grant St. Bring $5 (plus some money for booze) and make sure you’re 21+.

Tonight: Igloo Unofficial MIA After Party

If you haven’t learned by now, the masterminds of Igloo Music refuse to let the party end before we’ve had a healthy dose of their old school vibes. Saturday night will be no different at their Music is Art after party, held at the ever-intimate Gypsy Parlor. The usual suspects (though not to be downplayed) of John Patrick and Rufus Gibson will be joined by an impressive lineup including Brandon Chase, Dharma Doctor, Xotec, and Swivel. Dharma Doctor, who is Chris B. of Dharma Lab, will be opening the evening from 10-11 p.m., bringing some psychedelic flavor to the dance floor. I assure you, his set is one you don’t want to miss. Next up, from 11 p.m.-midnight, Igloo resident Rufus Gibson will serve up some Chicago-inspired house music that’s sure to put you in the mood. Tonight: Buffalo Rap Round Robin

What began as an annual Baltimore tradition has made its way to Buffalo, where three local acts meet three touring acts for a nonstop rap action in an innovative presentation of music. The Gypsy Parlor hosts tonight’s event, which begins at 9pm. The aim of the Rap Round Robin is to eliminate the “dead air and general lameness” of rap shows by creating an environment where there is continuous music throughout the show. Three stages are set up, and each act performs a single track before passing the mic to the next group. The audience is literally surrounded by music, and with three local favorites representing, this is a can’t miss show for hip hop heads. Jack Topht & Little Cake will take a stage tonight, along with Dr. Ooo, and Short Moscato. The touring acts for the tour are Passalacqua, Height Keech, and Eze Jackson, along with special guest PT[...]

Tonight: Headshots! Vol IV

Looking for something fun (and free!) to do on yet another frigid Buffalo night? Gypsy Parlor has you covered with another installment of their Headshots! series. Featuring some of Buffalo’s best hip hop acts, the showcase, soundtracked by Covert and hosted by Wza, is the fourth in a series that shows no signs of slowing down. Doors for the 21+ show are at 10, and with so many performances on deck, you don’t want to be late. Whether you are a staple of the scene a la We Stole the Show, the duo comprised of Grand Phee and Rhyson Hall, or are newer to the game like Short Moscato featuring Death Picnic,  musically there is something for every hip hop head in the city. Headshots! also has performances by Koolie High and Drew Hartman aka Dr. OoO. There will be a merch table disguised as a popup shop, brought to[...]

Tonight: Hank & Cupcakes

There’s a difference between going to a concert and seeing a live show, and as fans of Brooklyn-based electropop duo Hank & Cupcakes know, their shows are LIVE. Whether they’re covering the crowd and themselves in DayGlo paint, stripping down as the show heats up, or assailing your ears with their “this can’t possibly be music created by just two people” wall of sound, the couple (they’re together, and they’re perfect) literally bring the noise to every show they have. Buffalo is the second stop on their Ca$h 4 Gold tour, and the album is available on iTunes. Like their previous releases, it’s full of synthy pop beats, heavy drums, lots of bass, and just a touch of disco. Check them out at The Gypsy Parlor tonight, supported by Carina & the Six String Preacher. Tickets are just $5 and doors are at 9.

Today and Tonight: Red, White & Igloo – Queen City Cartel Boombox 003

America. Political stances aside, the Fourth of July is the one day a year where mostly everyone will bust out their patriotic attire, fire up the grills and shoot off those fireworks they scored from Pennsylvania (or trek downtown to watch regulated ones). For a while, my family and I had the same tradition each year. We would camp at Southwick Beach, which was just outside of Syracuse. I have the fondest memories as a child of chasing fireflies, spending time with my grandparents, the smell of the campfire and the exciting but almost terrifying feeling of holding a sparkler and running wild. My “Uncle Kenny” (we weren’t blood related) would gather the family, head to the beach and we would walk a decently far way down, where the campsites ended and there was hardly anyone in sight. My entire family and I, under the starlight ,with the sound of the[...]

Tonight: Headshots Volume 2

If you’re a fan of Buffalo hip-hop – or you’d like to get on the fast track to becoming one – the best place to be tonight is the Gypsy Parlor, where several of the Queen City’s most talented up-and-coming hip-hop acts will be performing as part of Headshots Volume 2. The latest installment will feature a collection of local rappers including Shuteyes, WZA & Tommy Two of Radarada, Short Moscato (who will also be hosting the event), Nat Wheat, Chronic Collective and Bagel Jesus with Sparkmatic. Buffalo has an incredibly vibrant hip-hop scene filled with highly talented people approaching the genre from a wide array of different background and styles. If you haven’t been paying attention to it, tonight would be a good night to fix that, and get with the program. The show starts at 10, and it figures to a wonderful showcase for our fair city’s ever-growing[...]

Tonight: Matt Pryor

Matt Pryor is one of those men who unintentionally became one of the founding fathers of a genre that would eventually come to be called “emo.” He and his band, The Get Up Kids, conquered the late 90s and early 00s with a string of passionate and critically acclaimed albums full of emotional indie rock.  He’s here in Buffalo tonight for an intimate acoustic show with a cast of other emo/pop punk greats. Joining Pryor is Bob Nanna (Hey Mercedes/Braid), Steve Soboslai (Punchline), Mark Rose (Spitalfield), and Anthony Musior from Buffalo-based band The Traditional. Doors are at 7:00pm, only $12 at the door. Tonight’s show has been moved to The Gypsy Parlor. All tickets purchased from The Waiting Room will be honored. Tonight: Rustic Radio, The Nigh, Cosmic Shakedown

Musical diversity is the name of the game at Gypsy Parlor tonight. You wouldn’t want to eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch and dinner (unless that thing was pizza) and you wouldn’t want to see the same band with different faces playing three sets in a row. Tonight, each band will bring their own unique style to the stage and do whatever they can to rock your bones. Rustic Radio takes the stripped down feel of rocking around a campfire and mates it with deep, soulful lead vocals that pierce into your being. Dipping their brush in the blues and spraying it over a canvas of rock, they flay audiences blazing originals, and supplement them with unique takes on cover songs. You will be drawn to the stage, and if anything, the vocals will never let go of your ear. You can call it shoegaze, but you’ll be doing[...]
