Tonight: Sugar City’s Soul Night

Buffalo might be in the grips of some hellafied arctic cold air this weekend but Milkie’s on Elmwood will be sizzling tonight because Sugar City’s Soul Night will be in full effect from 10am to the wee hours. $5 gets you in the door so you can shake your butts to the toe tapping and booty shaking soul sounds spun by DJ Handsome Dan, DJ Press, DJ Pat K and DJ Pumpkin Spice… while helping to keep Sugar City, that mighty DIY arts space that’s so important to our local arts and music scenes, running and doing it’s thing. Party starts at 10am and goes until 4am.

Tonight: Bethlehem Steel

The Buffalo-bred, Brooklyn based indie act Bethlehem Steel will be celebrating the release of their new record tonight at Mohawk Place. Out today via Exploding In Sounds Records, this is the band’s first full length record. Titled Party Naked Forever, it showcases their knack for dirty, in your face guitar riffs and vulnerable, cathartic lyricism. Joining Bethlehem Steel will be a full slate acts. Cold Sweats are grungey punk rockers via Binghamton and buffaBLOG favorites Pleistocene. The night will also feature sets from JACK, as well as DJ DMar. Doors are at 7, music at 8. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Slowdive

Tonight: Slowdive

Shoegaze magnates, Slowdive will be making a stop at the Town Ballroom tonight in support of their brand new record, Slowdive. Released in May, this is the English pioneers’ first full length release after their last LP from 1995, Pygmalion. The self titled record is everything a Slowdive fan could want after a reunion. Delivering on what made the band originally so captivating way back on their first LP, Just For A Day, while also stepping forward into a sound that’s very much an evolution. After the breakup in ’95, the Slowdive stopped producing music entirely, with some members going on to create music together. It wasn’t until 2014 that Slowdive reformed, releasing a new single, and re-imagining shoegazing. Slowdive’s impact on pop music, especially shoegaze, can’t be understated. Their sound, along with others, was the driving force behind the genre’s growth in the 80-90s. If the rough, textured production and airy,[...]

Tonight: Waxahatchee

Waxahatchee returns to Buffalo for the first time since 2015 tonight.  Katie Crutchfield’s last Buffalo appearance with her live band was her opening set for Sleater Kinney at Asbury Hall, which was in support of their third full length, titled Ivy Tripp. With another new record under her belt, Buffalo should welcome the live band’s return tonight at the Tralf Music Hall.  Released in July of this year,  Out in the Storm once again garnered Waxahatchee some crazy, well deserved media attention, after receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews from Pitchfork and more.  The full band live show is delicate and driving, and is one definitely worth seeing. Opening the show will be Ought, an amazing, frantic post punk act from Montreal, who played a great set at Mohawk Place back in August.  Tickets are available at the door tonight for $17, and doors open at 7pm.  This is definitely one you[...]

Tonight: Shilpa Ray

Bluesy Brooklyn  soul punk  heroine Shilpa Ray makes her welcome return to Buffalo tonight at Nietzsche’s. A shining beacon of integrity, genuine emotion and timelessness, Shilpa is back in town in support of her sophomore solo album Door Girl. Tonight: Strawberry Runners

Buffalo’s Sugar City is the host to a jam packed line up full of folk pop acts, both touring and local. A collaborative effort spanning Brooklyn, Denver, and Philly, the tender pop act will be stopping in Buffalo in support of the new five song EP, titled In The Garden, In The Night. Doors open for the show at 6pm, and while there is no cost listed on the event page, I would bring somewhere from 5-10 dollars for the touring band. Sugar City is an all ages alcohol / drug free space located at 1239 Niagara street, across the street from the Resurgence Brewing Company.

Tonight: Lazlo Hollyfeld & Friends Play Arcade Fire

Beloved Buffalo experimental rockers Lazlo Hollyfeld have previously taken on the music of Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, and Radiohead, and tonight they’re playing twenty… yes twenty Arcade Fire songs at the Mohawk, which is the closest we’ve gotten to the real thing since the fancy dress loving Arcade Fire has chosen to skip playing Buffalo for the last 12 years. If you caught their Radiohead In Rainbows shows last year at Iron Works and The Bug Jar you know Lazlo Hollyfeld will do a very good job, and with a whole bunch of accomplices joining them to generate that big Arcade Fire sound, tonight could be a real pre Halloween treat. Meanwhile, NYC rock legends The Strokes, who have played WNY, will be honored with a set of covers by local all-star tribute band Different Strokes, featuring Tom (Humble Braggers) Burtless, Ben (Dance Yrself Clean) Parsons, John (Girl Jeans) Grace, Ryan (The Slums) Schilia, and[...]

Tonight: The Ambulanters

Brit alternative band from Nebraska The Ambulanters drop by Milkie’s tonight to coincidentally play the release party for local psych/surf rockers Passed Out’s latest EP with David Dondero, Bold Folly, The Good Neighbors, and Passed Out, obviously. The fellas in Passed Out are back with the Aforementioned and How it Pertains to Absolutely Nothing, produced by Deadwolf’s Cody Morse and mixed by Elliot (M.A.G.S., KIN) Douglass, and lead single “Bukowski & Brautigan” is a literate and crunchy hit and run jam that you really ought to listen to right now. Please note The Ambulanters are not British in any way, but their sound is straight up British alternative, heavy on Joy Division and The Smiths, which is mighty tasty filtered through the band’s unassuming Midwestern lens.  Also hailing from the Midwest, Minneapolis songwriter David Dondero is in town in support of his latest album Inside The Cat’s Eye, while additional local support will[...]

Local scene mainstays, The Tins, will be celebrating the release of their new EP City Lies at the Lockhouse Distillery & Bar this evening. Since the band’s inception the aughts, the trio’s sound has evolved and grown throughout the times, changing with the scene while maintaining the band’s knack for tremendous hooks and choruses. Human Movement (Split w/ Direct Hit) by PEARS

Tonight: dreambeaches

Beloved Buffalo baroque indie surf pop band dreambeaches are back with their eagerly awaited second EP Disappearing Act, and they are rightly celebrating it’s glorious overabundance of riches with the people tonight at Milkie’s on Elmwood. Fearing Friday the 13th is for suckers, and if you’re going out you might as well go out strong kicking it with dreambeaches and a tight lineup including visionary MC extraordinaire Hop Hop, psychedelic rockers Bold Folly, and garage rocker Jack (aka Brittany Costa). Tickets are $10, which includes a hard copy of the EP if you’re into that sort of thing, and doors open at 8pm. Disappearing Act by dreambeaches

Tonight: Frankie Rose

Indie rock veteran Frankie Rose will be swinging through Buffalo tonight. Performing at the Town Ballroom’s intimate Leopard Lounge space, Rose is coming off the release of her fourth full length solo record, Cage Tropical. Having been on the scene for years, touring with bands like Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Beverly, she is now carving out her own sound as a solo artist. Inspired by both retro synth pop-rock and the silly eeriness of classic sci-fi films, her music is awash in shimmering, atmospheric and almost paranormal tones. Opening the show is Philly-based shoegaze rock group Suburban Living. Starting out as a solo project of Virginia musician Wesley Bunch, the group expanded into a 4-piece over the course of a five year period. Their sophomore record Almost Paradise was released last year through 6131 Records. Doors open at 7pm, with music starting around 8pm. Tickets are[...]

Tonight: Against Me!

Punk all-stars, Against Me! are making their way tonight to the Town Ballroom (change of venue from the Waiting Room) for what’s going to be an incredibly special night for fans of the band, and those into the scene Against Me! have been pioneering for almost over 20 years. The band are still going with just as much strength as when they started. Last September, the band released their seventh LP, Shape Shift with Me, which takes off from where they last left off. Their new outing doesn’t venture far off from what fans love to hear, but brings a little lightness and fun into the mix. On tour with Against Me! are LA’s Bleached, a punk trio with a touch of bouncy pop aesthetic and out of Canada, The Dirty Nil. Doors are set for 7pm and it’s $25 are the door.
