Just Announced: Horse Feathers

One of modern folk music’s most underrated and consistent acts, Horse Feathers, will return to Buffalo on Sunday, March 29th with an intimate engagement at the Tralf Music Hall. The Portland based band debuted in 2006 with its stunning debut effort, Words are Dead, and have been putting out quality album after album over the years. Horse Features will be on tour in support of its newest album, So It Is With Us. I remember catching the band a few years back in the Babeville basement and the performance still gives me the chills thinking about it. Tickets are currently on sale for $13 in advance, $15 day of.

Just Announced: Weird Al

One of the more unexpected success stories of 2014 was the comeback of Weird Al Yankovic, who dropped his well received new album, Mandatory Fun, last summer, and surprisingly (or maybe not depending on how you feel about the guy) gained his first #1 album on the Billboard charts of his long career (watch the pretty touching reveal here). The artist, who for nearly 30 years now, has made a career of parodying acts from Michael Jackson to the Presidents of the United States of America to Lorde, in addition to dropping countless viral music videos, just announced a massive tour in support of the album, one that will include a stop in Buffalo later this summer. Yankovic will bring his “Mandatory Fun Tour” to the University at Buffalo’s Center for the Arts Mainstage Theatre on Wednesday, July 15th. Tickets will on sale on Friday, January 30th at 10am, for $49.50.

Just Announced: Shakey Graves

This has been a busy week for show announcements (Diarrhea Planet, Torche, Tigers Jaw), but one of the more under-the-radar shows going down this spring will be the cult, anti-folk musician, Shakey Graves, making his debut on the Town Ballroom stage on Tuesday, March 31st. The NPR and Paste favorite, who was born as Alejandro Rose-Garcia and performs with his own make shift drum kit fashioned out of a suitcase, will be on tour in support of his newest album, And the War Came, which dropped in fall of 2014. Tickets for the spring engagement will go on sale tomorrow at noon, for $15 in advance, $18 day of.

Just Announced: Diarrhea Planet

If you were one of the roughly 250 people to go to Diarrhea Planet last fall at Mohawk Place, then you were one of the lucky ones to witness undoubtedly one of the best performances in Buffalo in all of 2014. This afternoon, after hearing mumblings on the street for months, it was finally confirmed that Diarrhea Planet would be coming back to Mohawk Place on Monday, March 30th. Between Cursive, Torche, and Diarrhea Planet all at Mohawk in March alone, we might be crashing upstairs for the month. Does anyone wanna go halfs on a practice space? Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon at Ticketmaster.

Just Announced: The Get Up Kids

Wow, ususally Friday afternoons are pretty boring in the blogosphere. We can thank After Dark Entertainment to jolting us out of our swivel chairs accompanied by a “Holy Shit!” Just about ten minutes ago, After Dark announced emo staples, The Get Up Kids, will be playing the Waiting Room on Wednesday, March 25th with up-and-coming indiemo act, PUP. Tickets go on sale January 15th on ticketfly.com for $18 advance/$22 day of, but I really wouldn’t be surprised if this sells out well in advance. You won’t want to miss this one. Nothing else cooler can happen on a Wednesday night.

Queen City Music Lottery Returns For Round Two

One of the more interesting projects that came out of the Buffalo music scene last year was the Queen City Music Lottery. A collaborative project headed by Sugar City and Peterwalkee Records, the lotto basically brought in local music vets and relative amateurs to make a cast of new musical acts. At the two drawings hosted early in 2014 at Spiral Scratch and Black Dots, participants threw their names in to a hat, were randomly selected, and basically, became a band. It didn’t matter what genre you came from, what instrument you may or may not have played, those four-five people were now a collective unit assigned to make music. It was pretty cool. Bands were asked to rehearse, put together a short set, and ultimately make their debuts later a couple months later at the Foundry. From punk to electro-dance to folk, there were some valient to great efforts[...]

Just Announced: Neutral Milk Hotel

Much celebrated indie-cult band, Neutral Milk Hotel, will be gracing the stage at Delaware Ave’s famed venue Asbury Hall this upcoming spring on Tuesday, April 21st. After staying out of the spotlight for years, front man Jeff Mangum recently began playing live again, including a Babeville date a couple years back. This past summer, the full band hit up the festival circuit to the pleasure of many. I caught them at the final night of TURF this past July. The set was as bizarre as it was nostalgic and magical, as many in the audience were treated to a set from a band that may never dreamed of seeing live until recently. The band has stated that this will be its last tour for the forceable future, which, if you know this band, could very well translate to BUY A TICKET OR ELSE YOU ARE SCREWED. Tickets will go on[...]

You can expect daily posts from Alt Buffalo regarding this show for the next five months, so be warned. Just Announced: buffaBLOG Holiday Party

And just like that, the holidays have arrived. After the pummeling South Buffalo and the south towns took from #snowvember last week, and the unfortunate flooding that comes from 80 inches of snow getting hit with 60 degree weather, people could use a little pick me up around here, and for some, the holiday season could not have come at a better time So, as things start to get back to normal in the Buffalo area,  we are happy to announce the latest edition of our buffaBLOG Holiday Party. This time around, our eclectic cast of WNY acts will include Radarada, Newish Star, Pleistocene, The Slums, and DJ Pizza Pizza, all ready to help ring in the holiday spirit on Allen Street. Oxford Pennant Outfits Phish For Upcoming Tour

Buzzing Buffalo pennant company, Oxford Pennant, will be supplying long time jam band, Phish, with custom pennants exclusively for the Vermont act’s upcoming tour. The designs (see below) are inspired by two recent Phish songs, “555” and “Waiting All Night,” both found on the quartet’s latest release, Fuego. Since its inception in 2013, the company, originally inspired by classic American sports pennants, has been providing custom flags for various companies, restaurants, and bands in Rust Belt areas, in addition to creating some music-centric pieces for fans of Kanye West and Drake. Oxford Pennant’s Phish series will be available on tour with the band and at Dry Phish Goods, the band’s official merchandise store. Just Announced: Cursive

Omaha heavyweights and indiemo staple, Cursive, is set to play Mohawk Place next year on Sunday, March 15th. The cult band will be touring in support of the expanded and deluxe reissue of its seminal, Saddle Creek released album, The Ugly Organ, a record that goes down as many a music elitists top 10, even top 5 releases of all time. The Ugly Organ was a catalyst for the emergence of indie rock, and Cursive would go on to become college radio legends. The upcoming tour will feature a variety of songs from the band’s seven album discography (we’re hoping more The Ugly Organ/Domestica select picks over Happy Hollow). I think we are good though, since the band states explicitly its are touring with a cellist. Tickets go on sale Friday, November 21st for $15 in advance, $17 day of at ticketmaster or at the Tralf Box Office. Exuent.

The show is a nice land for the CFA, a venue that had a nice run of indie-esque artists a few years back. Opening for the Decemerbists will be buzzing Toronto indie pop act, Alvvays.
