Just Announced: Sebadoh

If there was any doubt that Mohawk Place was back in business, that question has been laid to rest over the last couple months. It seems like we are writing about show announcements from fantastic bands on a near weekly basis, and like clockwork, this morning we got word that Sebadoh will be playing the venue on Thursday, June 4th. Sebadoh formed as a new venture for Dinosaur Jr.’s Lou Barlow after the songwriter/bassist left the band in the late 80s due to lack of song contribution and conflict with J Mascis. The trio became one of the leading acts in the lo-fi movement of the early 90s and consistently released quality albums, most notable 1991’s III and 1994’s Bakesdale, into the late 90s. The band’s ended its lengthy hiatus a couple years ago with the 2013’s Defend Yourself, and will see that reunion continue this summer on a tour that run’s[...]

Tonight: M.A.G.S.

Tonight may be a contender for one of the busiest music days in Buffalo in recent memory. Adding to an already bloated 4/18 is a showcase at Nietzche’s. Scheduled to play is pop-punk trio, American Low, Brooklyn’s psych-pop outfit The Midnight Hollow, indie rockers M.A.G.S., and the surfy Bryan Johnson and Family. Doors are at 9pm with a $5 cover.

Tonight: Modest Mouse

I was originally going to write a long piece on Modest Mouse in honor of the band’s sold out appearance tonight at Asbury Hall, but what’s the point. You know who Modest Mouse is. The show wouldn’t have sold out in 10 mins if you hadn’t, so I will save both parties the trouble and just bring us to up the present. The Portland-based rock outfit released its sixth studio album and first in eight years, Strangers to Ourselves, exactly one month ago to the date. I met the album with a pretty tepid response, thinking “it took eight years to release that?,” but after a few more listens, Strangers really grew on me, and I am really looking forward to Isaac Brock and crew tackling the new album and the band’s deep catalog later this evening. As I mentioned before, this show has been sold out since Day 1,[...]

The Soft Love Drops Debut Track “ALL OF IT”

Over the last couple months, the Soft Love has been making the rounds around Buffalo clubs, with each band mate dipping their toes back into the live scene after a couple prolonged absences. Made up of former members of the Thermidors, Fairweathers, and Son of the Sun, the four piece released its debut single, “ALL OF IT,” early last night. Recorded with go to Buffalo producer Jay Zubricky of GCR, and polished off over at Paul Besch’s Quiet Country Audio in Alden, “ALL OF IT” is a brash rocker that recalls acts like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Oasis, and even a less brooding/more agressive Interpol, certainly meant to be downed with a few shots of fine whiskey, or at least whatever is at arm’s length. The band can be seen live twice this weekend: tonight as part of the Tins’ Kickstarter Benefit Show at Mohawk Place and tomorrow, somewhere within[...]

The Wayouts Record Exclusive Record Store Day 7″ for WAYO FM

With all this talk of Record Store Day in Buffalo, there is a pretty cool RSD related project coming out of Rochester for Saturday’s big day. Featuring members of SPORTS, No Glitter, Howlo, Faux Leather Jacket, and Pleistocene, the Wayouts recorded a two track pressing titled Way Out/Roses and Rainbows in Ben Morey’s Submarine Records studio. The “supergroup” of sorts fleshed out a new version of the track “Way Out,” originally featured on an episode of the Flinstones back in the 60’s, in addition to a cover of “Roses and Rainbows” by Danny Hutton of Three Dog Night. Pleistocene’s Katie Preston tackles lead vocals on the latter track. Those screaming teenagers you hear in “Roses and Rainbows” are original shrieks recorded from overwhelmed Beatles’ fans outside of one of the Fab Four’s shows. The 7″ is currently available for purchase on the band’s bandcamp page, in addition to a limited number of  physical copies[...]

The Lagoonas – “Color Spectrum”

When Admirable Traits Records, a label with roots buried in Buffalo, Brooklyn, and soon to be Nashville, isn’t busy scooping up some of the Queen City’s best up-and-coming acts, the label is busy looking outside of NYS for burgeoning talent. For its latest signing, the AT crew has penned Memphis garage trio, the Lagoonas. “Color Spectrum,” the band’s first single off of its upcoming release, Welcome Home, begins with a piercing guitar line that quickly fades into a lo-fi, grisly fuzz that recalls Ty Segall or early Cloud Nothings. Expect Welcome Home to drop on June 2nd, and in the mean time, listen to “Color Spectrum” below. Still Diggin’: To Buy or Not To Buy

I download a lot of music, like a lot, and not in the legal way (shhh). It’s just so easy to go on a torrent page and type in an artist/album, and within seconds, have that music at my finger tips. Last year, after owning one of the crappiest record players known to man (thanks for nothing Urban Outfitters), I finally bought a solid player from U Turn, based on the recommendation from a fellow Rochester music blog. Once I got my player/receiver/speakers finally step up (which was another headache in its own right), I started to put a conscious effort towards building a small record collection. I began with some of my all-time favorites: Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It In People, Wilco’s Being There, pretty much any Radiohead, but after that, I kind of just stopped. I would spend hours walking up and down aisles in shops like[...]

Just Announced: Blonde Redhead

While caught up in an intense battle of paper football at the office today, Waiting Room announced a rare appearance of ethereal NYC trio, Blonde Redhead, set to hit Buffalo on Tuesday, June 16th. Beginning 20+ years ago, the long time threesome teeter taughters between dreamy electro pop and shoegaze to delicate indie a la Lykke Li. The band is best known for its stunning 4AD release, 23, dropped in 2007, and most recently released its latest album, Barragán, back in 2014. Tickets will go on sale this Friday, April 17th, at noon for $20 in advance, $25 day of.

“Night Time with Harvey O’King” Seeks Music Submissions

If you happened to notice your facebook feed was decidedly phalic-less over the last few months, then maybe you didn’t catch the note that Well Worn Boot had hung up the masks as the Plainsman road the Horse into the sunset for good. All is not quiet though on the WWB front. Former frontman, Matt Wisnewski, is set to debut a very different new project, a web series featuring paper mache dummies and puppets titled “Night Time with Harvey O’King.” According to the presser, the series is about a “washed-up talk-show host and his side-kick monkey.” So what does this have to do with music? Well, Wisnewski and crew are looking for artists to submit music to be featured in the series. Local acts like Mr. Boneless, Crontab U-John, and Green Jello have already gotten in on the fun, and more acts are being sought. If you are interested in possibly having your music featured[...]

Tonight: The Common Music Collective Presents: The Juliet Letters

It’s slower nights like tonight that force one to think a bit outside the box and seek something different if one wants to get its music fix. Tonight at Pausa Art House may be one of those events as The Common Music Collective, a group of artists featuring members of Wooden Cities, Tiny Rhymes, and other classical musicians from in or near New York State, will take on Elvis Costello’s The Juliet Letters.  Recorded and released with the Brodsky Quartet in 1993, The Juliet Letters, Costello’s 14th studio album, is a collection of 20 songs written for both voice and string ensemble, “inspired by the story of a professor who responded to letters written to Shakespeare’s Juliet Capulet.” The Common Music Collective will begin its take on The Juliet Letters this evening at 8pm. Cost is $7 for the general public or $5 for students.

The Hamiltones Release Self-Titled, Debut Tape

Last Friday evening, another chapter in an ongoing surf rock rivalry was written as the Hamiltones, the foil to fellow Rust Belt surf trio, Aaron & the Burrs, released its debut, self-titled tape. Currently available through More Power Tapes, home to fellow surf acts like Space Wolves and Rochester’s the Televisionaries, the Hamiltones finds members John Toohill (JOHNS, Alpha Hopper), Chris Scamurra (Space Wolves, Kharlos), and Rick Reynolds, estranged brother to Burrs’ member Nicholas Reynolds, continuing what started as a childhood rivalry to what has since evolved into a continuous bout of one-upmanship. The short collection of blisteringly quick surf is sure to light a fire under the debate of which trio reigns (riffs?) supreme. You can download The Hamiltones for free here, and keep an eye out for a possible Burrs’ counter punch in the near future.

Cadaver Country Drops New Track “Not Sleeping (you don’t know)”

Yesterday morning, Jacob Verghese, mulit-instrumental of crust folk act Pine Fever, quietly dropped a new song from his on-going solo project, Cadaver Country. Titled “Not Sleeping (you don’t know),” the track finds Verghese once again playing jack of all trades role, handling instrumental duties from banjo to washboard to harmonium. The upbeat toe tapper has a whimsical feel that artists like Andrew Bird and a (potentially) stripped down Dr. Dog do so well. Check out the song below.

Just Announced: Lord Huron

LA based folk band Lord Huron will be back in Buffalo this summer on Tuesday, July 28th. After playing at Mohawk Place a couple years back, the quartet has now graduated to the stage of Town Ballroom. Lord Huron made its full length debut in 2012 with the ethereal collection of tunes, Lonesome Dreams, and just yesterday, dropped its sophomore LP, Strange Trails, which should see some serious road testing this summer as the band rolls through town. Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 10th, at noon for $23 in advance, $26 day of. Widowspeak will join Lord Huron as support.

Tonight: Will Johnson

A couple months ago, long time Denton, TX rockers, Centro-matic brought their farewell tour through the Sportsmen’s Tavern, putting a cap on a nearly 20 year career, one that adopted Buffalo as a home away from home for the band. If you happened to miss the Centro-matic’s Buffalo goodbye, you sort of have a chance for redemption tonight at front man Will Johnson (Monsters of Folk) will be back in town, performing at the first house concert of the year in the living room Marty Boratin and Susan Tanner’s Hamburg home. Many people point to the first Canalside show as the beginning of summer, but in my mind, despite the weather not doing a very convincing job, Marty and Susan’s house concerts are the real start to the summer concert season. While Johnson isn’t set to go on until around 8pm, guests are encouraged to arrive around 6pm, with a[...]

Maybird Releases Music Video For “Two Horizons”

In the midst of recording new material, the Rochester bred psych folk act, Maybird, released the music video for “Two Horizons,” a track found on the group’s debut release Down and Under. The band currently splits time between Brooklyn and WNY, and for the clip, director and VICE news contributor, Michael Faller, choose to focus on the citizens of the band’s adoptive new city, recording intimate shots of both the young and old, at work and at play, some touching and some humorous, all while occasionally catching the breathtaking city skyline on film. The video feels like a moving collage of the Humans of New York photo series. Take a minute to watch the video for “Two Horizons” below and keep an eye out in the near future for new music from Maybird.
