Tonight: Passed Out

Another Saturday night, another stacked lineup.  Head down to Mohawk Place tonight to catch four solid acts, Bryan Johnson and Family, Marquee Grand, Wren Williams & The Sons of Luther, and Passed Out.  Most of the acts sharing the stage tonight are all fresh off the releases of new material or about to put out some new stuff, so if you haven’t caught any of them before, now is the time. The show is set to kick off at Mohawk Place at 8pm, and with a cover of only five bucks, how could you go wrong?

Minus the Bear at the Town Ballroom (03/30/17)

This past Thursday, legendary indie/math rock group Minus the Bear played an awesome show at the Town Ballroom.  They played a career spanning set, touching on most of the past albums, as well as playing multiple cuts from the solid new release, VOIDS.   Bayonne and Beach Slang were featured as openers on the tour.  While all bands differed sonically, the eclectic lineup came together for a super memorable show.  Check out some photos from the awesome night below. Tonight: Minus the Bear

Three fantastic acts will be swinging through the Town Ballroom tonight.  The first act to take the stage will be ambient / electronica / indie fusion act, Bayonne.  The solo act creates totally ethereal soundscapes in a live setting, using a super minimal setup.  Following Bayonne will be boisterous rock act, Beach Slang.  The notorious nostalgia fueled four piece played Buffalo once before, and their return will surely be nothing short off fantastic.  Even with some recent lineup changes, from what I’ve seen, the band still kills it live. Closing it all out will be the legendary indie / math rock act Minus the Bear.  Following some anniversary tours, the band finally got back together to record new material after five years, and it payed off.  They’re sure to be playing through multiple new songs off VOIDS, as well as material off of their older records. Local Natives at the Town Ballroom (03/17/17)

This past Friday, Local Natives brought their lofty indie sounds to the Town Ballroom.  This was the second date on the tour for their new album, Sunlight, but the Californian five piece worked like a well oiled machine, sounding completely ethereal. The near perfect, lofty, vocal harmonies sounded incredible throughout the venue, and emotions ran high throughout the crowd. Del Paxton Album Release Show at Mohawk Place (03/03/17)

Last Friday,  Buffalo emo / math rock trio, Del Paxton, celebrated the release of their fantastic new LP at Mohawk Place.  They managed to pull together some great local acts including VWLS, Yellow House, Sonny Baker Band, and Slow Cooker, resulting in what will probably one of be one of our favorite shows of the year.  You can check out our review of All Day, Every Day, All Night here, and check out some photos from the night below. Roger Bryan and the Orphans Drop New Single “WhyLife”

Buffalo americana act, Roger Byran and the Orphans, are back with their first new recording since 2014. Coming back from their break, the band just dropped a super catchy new track, titled “WhyLife.” While there’s no drastic changes sonically from their past releases, they remind us that they are still capable of writing an insanely catchy song. Bouncy and driving, the track is a perfect example of what Roger Bryan and the Orphans are all about. According to the band’s bandcamp, this version of “Whylife” is different compared to what will appear on an upcoming release, presumably out later this year. If you’re into alternative / americana acts like Ryan Adams or The Replacements, do yourself a favor and check out the track below.

Tonight: Jouska

If you thought your Wednesday night wouldn’t be very exciting, Dreamland has you covered.  Two touring bands will be rolling though the Franklin St. venue, along with some locals. Jouska will be returning from Albany, who recently signed to Tiny Engines records with a new full length album that dropped late last year, titled Topiary.  New Jersey pop rockers, Teenage Halloween, will also be rolling through town. Show up early to catch local hard hitters Uniform OPR and Tomoreaux. The gig is set to kick off at 8pm, and bringing $5 to support the two touring acts is a must.

The Buffalo natives, Lemuria, packed the room for the sold-out show, arguably one of the most full the room has been since the re-opening of the venue. Tonight: Palberta

If you’re looking for something to do this Monday night, Sugar City has you covered.  Brooklyn act, Palberta, will be rolling through Buffalo tonight, with some support from some great local acts.  Palberta is hot off some good press from Rolling Stone, and while I could attempt to explain their bizarre style of music, I think you’re just better off going to the show to see for yourself. Kicking off the show will be three local acts, Award Show, Slow Mutants, and dildoN’t.  Sugar City is a drug and alcohol free space located at 1239 Niagara Street.  The show is only six bucks and kicks off at 7pm.

Tonight: Lemuria

There are some big things happening in Buffalo tonight, but its pretty clear that Mohawk Place will be the place to be. Lemuria will be making their way to town, but not to perform just any show, they are touring on a ten year anniversary deluxe edition of their fantastic LP, Get Better, which they will be performing front to back, as well as some other cuts. While the the band have since moved away to different parts of the US, the original members spent their time growing as a band playing shows locally in Buffalo. Get Better definitely served as a defining record to many Buffalonians that were active within the music scene when it was released.  Let’s hope they all roll out to Mohawk and show Lemuria some love. Close Ties Release Bedroom Pop Debut

Close Ties is a pretty unique act within the Buffalo music scene.  Their five song EP, titled “Nothing really shocks me anymore.,” dropped earlier this month and is an impressive debut to the scene. The EP was written and recorded by Matt Walker in his basement with vocalist Natalie Colucci, later to be mixed and mastered by Buffalo uberproducer Jay Zubricky at GCR Audio. “Nothing really shocks me anymore.,”  as a whole is reminiscent of modern pop punk / emo-tinged acts like Tigers Jaw, Adventures, and especially The Front Bottoms, notably on the single, “Church in the Morning.”  This standout track showcases Colucci’s immense talent for lyrics and telling a story. “Church in the Morning” is all about staying in on a Saturday night because of a family commitment the next day that you aren’t super pumped about. The duo utilizes overtly personal lyrics and while driving acoustic guitar builds up into a climax where bouncy[...]

If you’ve been at all involved with the Buffalo music scene over the past few years, you should be no stranger to the local indie-emo trio, Del Paxton.  Following their debut in 2013, and a split 7″ in 2015, the trio are gearing up for a full length via Topshelf Records, a major label in the modern “emo revival” scene.  While you’ve probably heard them play this track at various shows over the past year, we are finally being treated to the long awaited studio recordings. “Take It To The Limit” follows the band’s theme of introspective lyrics and math rock inspired instrumentals,  but this track carries an overall much more refined feeling.  The song is one of the band’s most driving yet, featuring catchy riffs, dynamic drums, killer melodies, and almost playful backing vocals all coming together to create overall incredible balance and composition.  While their more obvious, classic, emo influences like Braid and[...]

Tonight, Milkies on Elmwood will be hosting a short, sweet show showcasing three local acts.  Freshly formed fuzzed out rock two piece, Green Slime, are on the bill, and are sure to rip through plenty of tracks of their great Self Titled release, which came out this September.  Also featured on the bill are lo fi punk two piece, Space is Haunted, fresh off of the release of a new album, titled Contact.   The show will be rounded out by indie psych act Chevron Bloom. Doors open at 8pm and admission is only $5.  Small price to pay for a stacked gig.

Tory Lanez at the Town Ballroom (12/4/16)

Canadian hip hop artist, Tory Lanez, packed a sold out Town Ballroom for an electric show on Sunday.  Lanez kept the crowd on their feet throughout the whole show,  playing some old songs, as well as tracks off of his major label debut, I Told You So.   His set was nothing short of insanity from start to finish. The Kerfuffle Before Christmas at KeyBank Center (12/2/16)
