Tonight: The Get Money Squad

Tonight marks a momentous occasion for one of Buffalo’s brightest up-and-coming bands, The Get Money Squad. After two years of impressive local shows the band made their label debut on Fresh Selects with their killer EP, Nothing’s Wrong. The project’s unique sound which they’ve dubbed “urban-surf” is an intoxicating blend of surf rock and classic R&B sounds. While these songs should be familiar to anyone who has seen them in recent years, tonight marks a new chapter as the band’s sound spreads outside our fair city to the world at large. And if you haven’t seen them live? You’ve been missing out, as the band could not sound any tighter and lead singer, Quinton Brock makes crowd participation key. But make sure to get down there early though, as local garage-rockers, Feverbox, will bring their raw anthemic rock sounds to Nietzsche’s. The band recently debuted one of their strongest releases yet,[...]

Tonight: Sunflower Bean

If you can clear out some free time on your mother’s day, head down to Mohawk Place tonight for a short but sweet show.  New York City’s buzziest act, Sunflower Bean, will be in town in support of their debut record, Human Ceremony.   Coming from someone who has seen the band once before,  this is a live set you won’t want to miss.  The songs really manage to come alive in a way that the recordings just don’t do justice.  We had a chance to chat with with Nick Kivlen of the band about their new record, their tour, and much more, and you can click here to check that out as well. Kicking things off will be Buffalo’s own Get Money Squad, and doors are set to open at 6:30pm, with a show time of 7pm.  Tickets are available at the door for only 12 bucks.

Tonight: buffaBLOG’s 6th Birthday Party

There’s something great to be said about the camaraderie that has formed between buffaBLOG, Buffalo musicians and honest music lovers over the past six years. We’re celebrating the all-around enthusiasm for the local music scene as well as the DIY essence of that camaraderie tonight at Nietzsche’s, and the lineup couldn’t be doper. Helping to kick off the night are Telempathy and The Get Money Squad, both of which maintain a surfy tone, though Telempathy has a more 60’s rock-infused lo-fi sound while TGMS has a breezier groove to them. Also slated to play are Cooler, one of our favorite fuzz rock bands who seem to be gaining enormous momentum lately, Moody Cosmos, psychedelic garage rock act who are gearing up to deliver new material this summer, and The Leones, whose dreamy, ethereal tunes are every bit atmospheric as they are ruminative. The only sad bit of news to report on is the cancellation of Bethlehem Steel’s set for the night.[...]

Just Announced: buffaBLOG’s Sixth Birthday Party

It seems like just yesterday that buffaBLOG was obsessively writing about Love Scenes, The Bird Day, and Arctic Death, but after checking the site stats, it seems as though this was five plus years ago. This means we are turning six. It’s time to celebrate. Please join us on Saturday, March 26th at Nietzsche’s where we celebrate our existence as an all-volunteer blog that is just really into the Buffalo music scene. On the main stage this year we have trippy-sunrock act, The Get Money Squad, along with support from Brooklyn-based fuzzy sweetness Bethlehem Steel (fronted by former Buffalonian Becca Ryskalczyk), dreamy psych-folkers The Leones, and the night started off by scene newcomers straight from 2002, Cooler. On the way to bum cigarettes we got you covered. At the front stage we will have a karaoke set by psych-y Fredonia art student, Moody Cosmos. Starting off the night we will have super[...]

Tonight: The Moth & The Flame

The Tralf seems to be the place to be right now, at least in terms of October gigs. Tonight, the venue plays host to alt-rock rising stars The Moth & The Flame. TMTF are currently out on tour in support of their recently released EP, Young & Unafraid, whose title track has seen a ton of success as the band’s first release with Elektra Records. Tonight’s performance is a last minute addition to the group’s tour, and will be  a part of Alt Buffalo’s ongoing “You Saw Them First” series. Local acts The Get Money Squad and Wolf are set to open. Doors open at 7pm with a $10 cover.

The Get Money Squad Drops Follow Up Single “Pillow Talk”

One of our favorite releases from last summer came from the Get Money Squad. Featuring Quinton Brock and Jon Bap of Network, the act’s short, self-coined “urban surf” EP was the perfect blend of off beat Mac DeMarco meets Shuggie Otis/Bill Withers lo-fi vibes. The group went on to open for Girl Talk at Canalside, but since then have been pretty quiet. With the release of Money Squad’s latest single “Pillow Talk,” though, Brock and crew are back to once again to help soundtrack our latest rust-belt summer. The rather sensual “Pillow Talk,” a track the band describes as a “song for summer lovers,” appears to be the first single off of the Get Money Squad’s forthcoming EP, titled Ruff Buff, and while the group has maintained its lo-fi sounds, Brock now appears to be vocally channeling the Beach Boys and even the soulful side My Morning Jacket (those falsettos[...]

Tonight: Girl Talk

Tonight, Pittsburgh mash-up guru, Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis), brings his brilliant dance party back to Buffalo for a highly anticipated show at Canalside. A party for the body and the mind, Gillis creates a full on sensory overload experience that also manages to simultaneously stimulate the brain with thought provoking and frequently hilarious mash-ups while driving crowds positively insane with delight. Tickets are $15 for the rabble and $55 for the hoi poloi, and if you missed it here’s Vanessa Lyne’s interview with the man himself. If you manager to arrive at Canalside early, make sure to catch the urban surf vibes of The Get Money Squad. The buzzing, Buffalo act, comprised of members of Network, recently released their debut EP, Nothing’s Wrong, capturing our album of the week honors. Music kicks off at 7pm.

The Get Money Squad – Nothing’s Wrong

A spanking-new collaboration from Network’s Quinton Brock and producer Jon Bap keeps it fresh and brings forth a batch of songs with an unexpected new sound. Dubbed The Get Money Squad, the duo gets summery with their debut EP titled Nothing’s Wrong. Think the carefree attitude of Mac DeMarco meets the poetic softness of Shuggie Otis. Bap’s jangly guitar riffs compliment Brock’s smooth vocals nicely, and the combination is cooler than John Stamos double-fisting a pair of large Slurpees. Damn, that’s cool. Nothing’s Wrong is our Album of the Week. “Bohemia” introduces the EP with a quick minute of dialogue before melting away into a hypnotic instrumental section that I wish was much longer. The opener bleeds right into “June666” (my favorite of the five tracks), which chronicles a relationship between the devil and his significant other while a simple drumbeat and a fun bass line carry the song through[...]

The Get Money Squad Drops Debut Single, “Back Again”

Last night, Quinton Brock of Network and producer Jon Bap debuted an interesting new project called The Get Money Squad. The pair is prepping the release of a debut EP and have shared their first single, titled “Back Again.” Those familiar with Network’s Death Grips inspired live shows will be pleasantly surprised to hear laid back, chiming guitars, and the smooth vocals of Brock, drawing comparisons to the latest albums from both Mac DeMarco and Ducktails. Check out “Back Again” below and keep an eye on the band’s soundcloud page for future tracks.
