Slow Cooker – Do a Kickflip

Grab your board and get ready to shred with Buffalo four-piece, Slow Cooker, and their debut full length, Do a Kickflip, a post-hardcore tour de force that will leave your ears happy and bleeding. Since forming in 2015, old friends Ian McCrohan, Andy Krzystek, Joe McGrath and Adam Malchof have carved out a distinct and delightful calamity of sweaty garage rock injected with hardcore punk super serum. The results, as reflected in the hilariously off-putting cover art, are unapologetically unique, individualized and just plain awesome. You can call it “weird,” but the best and most interesting things in life usually are. Do a Kickflip opens with a big bang with the track, “Fix It.” Right off the bat, Slow Cooker pummels you with a one-two knockout punch of righteously avant-garde garage jams complemented perfectly by unmistakable vocals. Singer/guitarist McCrohan delivers resilient lyrics with a frantic flamboyancy and mood swing inflections[...]

Tonight: Slow Cooker

Tonight Buffalo surf punks Slow Cooker celebrate the release of their debut LP Do A Kickflip at Duende at Silo City with an international lineup featuring fellow local punks Science Man  and 2 of London (Ontario)’s finest punk up and comers KLAZO and MANAGER. With Do A Kickflip Slow Cooker (Ian McCrohan, Andy Krzystek, Joe McGrath, Adam Malchof) stretches out their sound to embrace some psychedelia, garage rock, and New Wave while staying true to their school of wanton thrash and scuzzy surf punk. Science Man aka John (one half of Night Slaves) Toohill will be playing some jams from his recently released eponymous debut, while London Ontario’s KLAZO and MANAGER will be getting everything started with their respective  crushing thrash punk and mind shredding and doom laden noise rock. Big kudos to Duende for trading the laid back, folk vibes they’ve become known for since opening last summer for some straight up[...]

Tonight: Giant Peach

Self-proclaimed diarycore/wraithcore act Giant Peach will be hitting up Mohawk Place today. The trio has just released But You Made Me Such A Beautiful Thing, a sprawling, sonic evolution for the Brooklyn act, who have traded out their raw indie-punk sound for something more subtle – think Rainer Maria or Hop Along. Joining them are noisy Montreal janglers DBPS, and a stacked local lineup featuring Slow Cooker and Slinky X. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place at 8pm. Make sure you have at least $8 for admission, but come with a few extra bucks to buy something from the bands. But You Made Me Such A Beautiful Thing by Giant Peach

Tonight: SLUGS

Rochester by way of Los Angeles trippy as hell slackrock outfit SLUGS will be laying down their enigmatic vibes tonight  when they return to Mohawk Place. Filling out the night’s roster are Alleys, a punk/emo group that showcase solid guitar compositions and a high octane energy, Passed Out, who just released their newest single, “the inverse is true,” and Slow Cooker, who always bring it with fast, solid tunes that mash up surfer rock that sounds like it’s been dragged through the mud and back. The night’s tunes start at 8pm. Cover is $3. My Life as a Bro by Taking Meds

Tonight: Walrus

Tonight Curly’s will host Canadian Psyche-Rock outfit Walrus at the cozy west side DIY venue. “Walrus is one of the best bands I’ve ever seen live,” Schila, a booker for Curly’s, says adding “they were here like 2 years ago and people still stop me to ask about them.” Walrus’ show is one of a couple in the states for the band before they head back to Canada, in lieu of their first European tour with Wintersleep. Walrus’ new record Family Hangover  will not officially be released until June, but they will be playing most of the new album tonight. “It’s a little different,” vocalist and guitarist Jordan Murphy says of the June release adding, “we really took our time to make sure it was exactly how we wanted it to sound. it’s our first LP and that only happens once.” Also on the bill tonight are Steak & Cake alumni punk outfit Slow Cooker,[...]

Tonight: Del Paxton

If I’m being frank, it’s somewhat difficult to write a Buffalo show preview from a new angle for a band like Del Paxton, a band that has been at it for 4 years, covered lovingly on buffaBLOG countless times, and premiered on a national level by outlets like Impose Magazine, KEXP and The A.V. Club. What I can say is that Del Paxton is a pretty honest representation of what it means to be deeply immersed in this city’s DIY community.  They play music for the sake of playing music, all while continually supporting other local artists and sporting a humble attitude despite their laudable success. Whether or not its members agree, this band means a great deal to a lot of people, especially fellow Buffalo musicians. The band’s new record, All Day, Every Day, All Night (out today via Topshelf Records) is a completely cathartic experience. Though it might not[...]

Slow Cooker – “Bird Flu”

Local punk/surf rock act, Slow Cooker, has released the second single off of their upcoming debut tape, titled Another Typo. “Bird Flu” is nothing short of rip roaring, with loud, angular guitar and shouted vocals throughout. The four piece really drives it home with the use repetition in all aspects of the song, especially with the repeated lyric “I’ve got bird flu” ringing in your ears from start to finish. The guitars, drums, and bass all come together to create something rushed and frantic sounding, pushing the listener to the brink on insanity, but in a good way. If you might like a less psych influenced Destruction Unit or the Buffalo act the Utah Jazz, this one is will be for you. After hearing the first two tracks the band has dropped, it seems their debut tape is surely shaping up to be something solid. You can check out the track below, and you[...]

Tonight: Atsuko Chiba

Is your Monday in need of a little color? These gray skies have a stranglehold on your morale, you say? Well I’ve got your remedy right here: Atsuko Chiba. Not only will Chiba make your ears happy, but they’ll satisfy your eyes with their live show, which “aims to create immersive sensorial environments by combining sound-based creative practices and live visuals,” according to their bandcamp.
