Tonight: Bummerville

Tonight Deep Space 8 will be the gnarliest spot in Buffalo with an evening packed with down and dirty, sludge-punk rock. Daniel Brady Lynch’s Bummerville, will be headlining the show and backed by a full band. Good luck keeping your brains from melting out of your ears as these guys bring us an oozy concoction of raw garage riffs and spectral, haunted house vocals coated with a slimy surfer sheen. Expect performances off the newly released album, Bottom Feeder, and a mix of new and old tracks. Also getting in on the grime is Tina Panic Noise, Buffalo’s favorite Queercore, alt-punk rockers. Described best as “noises we make as we panic,” prepare for thrashing guitars, banshee screams and a full body, in-your-face performance from this exciting and raucous three-piece. Rounding out the lineup are Velvet Bethany and Main Breaker. Doors at 7pm, music at 8:30pm. $5 at the door.

Tonight: Cooler EP Release Show

With their high-level energy and expertly crafted melodies at the ready, alternative rock three-piece Cooler will be performing tonight to a hometown crowd at Buffalo’s historic venue Mohawk Place on 47 Mohawk St., heralding in the release of the band’s new EP entitled Buried. Tonight: Fast Romantics

Toronto indie rockers Fast Romantics are joining with Buffalo-based indie pop group The Tins for a show tonight at Lockhouse Distillery & Bar, located at 41 Columbia St., Buffalo. Compared by news outlet NPR to Elvis Costello & The Attractions and influenced by power pop, Fast Romantics released their most recent album American Love in April. Hailed by USA Today for their “brilliant pop exuberance,” The Tins will release their new content digitally on December 8. Doors open at 8 pm.\ for the show, which is set to begin around 9. The venue is only open to those 21 and over. The price of admission is $7 in advance (tickets are still available through ticketfly.com) and $10 at the door, but be sure to bring more for festive purposes just in case.

Tonight: Waxahatchee

Waxahatchee returns to Buffalo for the first time since 2015 tonight.  Katie Crutchfield’s last Buffalo appearance with her live band was her opening set for Sleater Kinney at Asbury Hall, which was in support of their third full length, titled Ivy Tripp. With another new record under her belt, Buffalo should welcome the live band’s return tonight at the Tralf Music Hall.  Released in July of this year,  Out in the Storm once again garnered Waxahatchee some crazy, well deserved media attention, after receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews from Pitchfork and more.  The full band live show is delicate and driving, and is one definitely worth seeing. Opening the show will be Ought, an amazing, frantic post punk act from Montreal, who played a great set at Mohawk Place back in August.  Tickets are available at the door tonight for $17, and doors open at 7pm.  This is definitely one you[...]

Tonight: Conor Oberst

After a bit of a prolonged local absence, Conor Oberst, sans his Bright Eyes moniker, will be returning to the Buffalo area tonight to perform within the acoustically rich walls of Babeville’s Asbury Hall. The Saddle Creek all-star has been touring in support of his latest record Salutations, the full band follow-up to last year’s bare bones Ruminations. The former reworked a number of the 2016 release’s tracks in addition to adding a handful of new songs to fill out the collection. Opening up for Oberst will be one of NPR’s current obsessions, the breakthrough folk singer Phoebe Bridgers. Tickets are still available to grab at the door for $30 or $35 dollars. Music is set to kick off at 8pm.

Tonight: Dan Tedesco

Tonight, the 9th Ward will be hosting Iowan singer/songwriter Dan Tedesco sponsored by Community Beerworks. Tedesco is a tad edgier than your average singer/songwriter with candid folk songs packed with unapologetic lyrics of an edgier lifestyle. The Iowan musician paints a portrait that gives a nod to Townes Van Zandt while maintaining his own identity. Prior to performing, Tedesco will be showing his film, “Chasing The Light,” featuring himself and giving an insight on what it’s like to be an independent musician as he plays through the countryside. Tickets are $15 with 7pm doors. Written by Lucy Bell

Five Most Anticipated Acts of Pitchfork Festival: Friday

buffaBLOG is elated to announce that we will be covering the Pitchfork Music Festival for the third year in a row. The festival takes place at Union Park in Chicago, and we are sending blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor, to capture all of the action. The festival will take place July 14th through July 16th and will be headlined by LCD Soundsystem, A Tribe Called Quest, and Solange, with dozens of other amazing performers sprinkled across the weekend.  In anticipation of the festival, here are the five acts we are most excited to see on Friday.  You can check out Brendan’s photos from last year HERE, HERE, and HERE. Priests @ the Green Stage, 1:45pm Priests played their only Buffalo show back in 2014 at the Glitterbox, and anyone in attendance at that show knows why they made this list. The post punk act just released an album, titled Nothing Feels Natural, this year, and[...]

Slow Caves

Tonight: Slow Caves

Slow Caves are an exciting power pop band out of Fort Collins, Colorado and tonight they are bringing their killer vibes to Mohawk Place. Fronted by brothers, Jakob and Oliver Mueller, Slow Caves are a refreshing update to the jangly indie rock sound, mixed with a tasteful amount of synth. They are coming off their recently released EP, Desert Minded on Old Flame Records. Playing alongside Slow Caves on this stacked bill are Coral Collapse, a shoegaze influenced group that make use of a bevy of wonderful textures, and Yali, a folk-rock inspired band that use solid vocal melodies. Tunes start at 8pm. $5 at the door.

Iron Chic - Tonight, Waiting Room

Tonight: Slowshine

Those Little Baltimore rascals are up to it again! This time they’re bringing Albany shoegazers Slowshine to town for what promises to be an extremely sad evening full of delightfully downtrodden music. Also playing tonight are Little Baltimore in-house sad boys Holland Purchase, and their in-house discordant brethren in Yellow House. Rounding out the evening is male/female sobcore act Honey Coma. Emos everywhere need to ask a punk where Little Baltimore is. Show up at 8 if you’re feeling froggy – music will be done by 12 so y’all should plan to party after. Brush up on your Little Baltimore etiquette – details here.

Tonight: Basement

You might want to get down to the Studio at Waiting room tonight.  UK pop punk / alt /emo act Basement is making their triumphant return to our fine city tonight, fresh off the release of a new record, titled Promise Everything.  On tour with Basement is New York indie act, Eskimeaux, and the recently reunited Ovlov. If you caught Eskimeaux at Sugar City last year, you should know that Eskimeaux alone is worth the price of a ticket.  This is a gig you’re not going to want to miss. Doors open for the show at 6:30pm, with a showtime of 7:30pm. Tickets are $19 at the door, which is a small price to pay for this stacked bill.

Tonight: Best Coast

In 2009, Bethany Cosentino burst onto the indie rock scene as one-half of Best Coast, a hauntingly romantic homage to all things heartbreak, weed and cats. Irony-free, Bethany’s heart-on-her-sleeve lyrics, coupled with the amazing instrumentation of Bobb Bruno, her partner in crime, led to one of 2010’s most unlikely success stories; the Crazy For You album, a record that seemed to excite just about everyone. Equal parts fun-in-the-sun and reverb-drenched Beach Boys melancholia, this was an album the underground and mainstream could both agree on and wrap their heads around. The songwriting was just that strong. Since that time, Best Coast has released two more albums, reputation firmly intact. Tonight, along with Sunflower Bean, an utterly fantastic psych-pop band with influences ranging from the Smiths to more recent (and fellow Brooklyn based) Diiv, Best Coast will be hitting up the Tralf (7pm, $24) for a night of sheer audio bliss.[...]

Tonight: Black Lips

Good Bad, Not Evil. It’s the title of one of the Black Lips most popular albums and a pretty good descriptor of the band as a whole. Crass, juvenile, mischievous; they’re the kids in high school that failed every class, weren’t allowed to attend prom, spent the majority of the year planning a senior prank, then got kicked out of school for smoking cigs in the girls bathroom. And along the way decided to become one of the coolest and most interesting bands in rock’n’roll. Their sound; an amalgamation of 60’s garage, punk, classic rock’n’roll and psych-voodoo, has always lent heavily on the retro-vibe, while somehow remaining extremely fresh and current. They are known just as much for their whacked out videos, their blistering live sets and their willingness to play anywhere at anytime (sometimes resulting in 5-7 shows a day, as was the case at SXSW a few years[...]

Five Most Anticipated Acts of Pitchfork Festival: Friday

Last year was my first ever Pitchfork Festival experience, and let me tell you, it’s something I’ll never forget.  The bands, the food, the city, and just the overall vibe of the festival, all come together to make one of my favorite music festivals – period.  The Chicago-based music festival boasts phenomenal lineups year after year, and 2016’s lineup is no different. As part of buffaBLOG’s coverage leading up to the festival this weekend, I will be highlighting my five most anticipated acts of each day of the festival.  You can check out last years photos here, here, and here. Julia Holter @ Green Stage (4:35pm)  Julia Holter’s 2015 album, Have You In My Wilderness, was almost immediately met with critical acclaim.  Her transition away from her more experimental ambient work and into a more art / baroque pop style was met with open arms.  I can’t wait to see how[...]
