Tonight: Hank & Cupcakes

Tonight Nietzsche’s will be jumping thanks to an incredible slate featuring the thunderous dance punk of Hank & Cupcakes and some of Buffalo’s most forward looking acts. Hailing from Brooklyn, Hank & Cupcakes, aka Sagit Shir and Ariel Scherbacovsky, rock an evolving, mighty sound that currently skews more punk than dance on their third full length release Cheap Thrill, while still keeping those danceable beats coming. Opening the show will be R&B crooner from the future Saint Opal, grunge rock heroes SMUG, and charming vintage alternative rock revivalists Hundred Plus Club. Doors open at 9pm and cover is $6.

There’s really no denying that the Buffalo music scene is cranking right now. Collaborations aplenty, bands are going into the studio left and right, and the releases are coming hot and heavy, with the Del Paxton full length LP last week celebrated at the Mohawk and tonight at Nietzsche’s for brand new Humble Braggers. Tom Burtless and the fellas (Bryan Zells, Matt Chavanne) will be celebrating the release of the very first full length album I Know Better, I’m No Better with a ridiculously loaded lineup including CHAD VALLEY, dreambeaches, and Bottler. Recorded by Elliot (M.A.G.S., KIN) Douglas, there’s been a lot of buzz around this next step for Humble Braggers, so you’re definitely going to want to snap up I Know Better, I’m No Better to have it properly digested before the summer show season gets going. Tonight: Cooler

Tonight’s show, presented by our good pals at The Public, seems like a no-brainer in terms of quality. Between Cooler, The Slums and Ugly Sun, each band on the bill are local pioneers in their own right, respectably carving out their own pocket within the indie, fuzz-rock and post-punk worlds and consistently putting out thoughtful, well produced material. Cooler’s most recent full length release, Phantom Phuzz, re-affirmed the high standard that all three of these bands set for themselves. The album is a feel-good listen. It’s not super complex or difficult to digest, but it’s exceptionally catchy and radiates honest feelings. This band possesses an incredible amount of charm, which isn’t something I usually associate with fuzz-rock, but they manage to translate that charm pretty darn well from their recorded material to their live shows. Get to Nietzsche’s tonight at 8:30pm. $5 entry.

Tonight: Shana Falana

Kingston, NY-based sparkle-pop duo, Shana Falana is set to make a stop on their national tour tonight at Nietzsche’s. In support of their latest release, Here Comes the Wave (Team Love Records), the duo consisting of Shana Falana and Mike Amari blend ambient dream-pop melodies with a lush indie rock backing. Also on the bill are the ever-evolving psych-pop trio, The Tins, baroque indie rockers, dreambeaches, and up front is looptastic Matt Script. Doors are at 9pm with a $5 cover.

Wednesday Buffalo News restaurant reviewer Andrew Galarneau delivered a terrific article summarizing the terrific bounty and potential that is the current Buffalo food scene. In addition to the still valuable classics that defined the region for generations (wings, fish fries, beef on weck), he extolled the virtues of the farm to table movement as well as the new ethnic cuisines arriving in our area thanks to the newest members of our community, and heartily encouraged local eaters to branch out and support these new efforts. It’s an amazing time to be an eater in this underdog and snake bit city, or a supporter of our local music scene, but you already knew that. Which brings me to tonight’s entertainments at Nietzsche’s featuring Aircraft, OL’ CD, and Feverbox. Just Announced: Black Lips

Atlanta garage rock rascals, Black Lips, revealed on their website that they will be coming to Buffalo this summer and playing a venue that is bringing in more and more indie talents. Black Lips will be playing Nietzsche’s on Saturday, July 16th, with pre-sale tickets going for $15 plus modest Ticket Masters fees, like the luxury of printing your ticket for yourself or something. This will probably sell out so I would really suggest getting a ticket now rather than later because Nietzsche’s doesn’t hold much more than 225 people.

Tonight: buffaBLOG’s 6th Birthday Party

There’s something great to be said about the camaraderie that has formed between buffaBLOG, Buffalo musicians and honest music lovers over the past six years. We’re celebrating the all-around enthusiasm for the local music scene as well as the DIY essence of that camaraderie tonight at Nietzsche’s, and the lineup couldn’t be doper. Helping to kick off the night are Telempathy and The Get Money Squad, both of which maintain a surfy tone, though Telempathy has a more 60’s rock-infused lo-fi sound while TGMS has a breezier groove to them. Also slated to play are Cooler, one of our favorite fuzz rock bands who seem to be gaining enormous momentum lately, Moody Cosmos, psychedelic garage rock act who are gearing up to deliver new material this summer, and The Leones, whose dreamy, ethereal tunes are every bit atmospheric as they are ruminative. The only sad bit of news to report on is the cancellation of Bethlehem Steel’s set for the night.[...]

Tonight: Sixties Future EP Release Party

After stoking serious interest about town with some impressive shows at the Mohawk Place this summer and fall, not to mention at Dreamland opening for Made Violent’s last local show before their UK tour with Wolf Alice and Drenge, Buffalo’s next big band, Sixties Future will be celebrating the release of their highly anticipated debut EP tonight at Nietzsche’s. If that wasn’t enough, the release party also features from newbie emo/grunge locals Cooler, the soaring beach punks of Rochester’s Skirts, and the always excellent Aircraft. For my part, I don’t think I’ll ever forget that first time seeing Sixties Future at Mohawk this past summer, watching these guys unload a pleasing and distinctly Rust Belt tinged brand of American rock with notes of Springsteen and The National, and exchanging incredulous looks with fellow staffers Brendan O’Connor and Ron Walczyk while Mike Moretti stood at the back smiling beatifically like a happy papa.[...]

Tonight: The Tins

Even with the year nearly complete, the Buffalo music scene still has a couple new releases to look forward to before the calendar turns, and one of those is from the Tins. While recording their forthcoming full length with Robby Takac, set to drop in 2016, the pop trio managed to pump out the self recorded EP Love on Strike as a place holder. The EP’s first single, the rising “Summer Jazz,” was already shared couple weeks back via Brooklyn Vegan, and you can expect the band to premiere the rest of the album when they take the stage later on at Nietzsche’s Joining the Tins this evening will be Rochester’s ready-to-break, electro dance rockers KOPPS (who may or may not have a good buddy joining them tonight…), reshuffled Buffalo synth rockers Humble Braggers, and Brooklyn’s hypnotic post-punk outfit, the Midnight Hollow. Tonight: Damian

Mondays are usually fairly sleepy in Buffalo, so many local singer-songwriters head on down to Nietzsche’s in order to try new material, collaborate with other musicians, or grab a fairly-priced PBR. However, this week at Nietzsche’s is a little different from the rest. This week is the debut and farewell performance of mumbly introspective local songwriter, Damian. We’ve covered a lot of Damian’s solo work and various group efforts over the past five plus years. His album, You Don’t Need It, has over 100 plays on our office computer, and we even dubbed his song “I My Own,” as the best song out of Buffalo in 2014. I guess tonight will be Damian’s Buffalo-residency swan song. It’s no doubt that he will be back, playing intimate semi-frazzled and endearing performances, it will just take a bit. Come to Nietzsche’s starting at 8pm to catch one of Buffalo’s best songwriters. Free dollars.

Tonight: Superhuman Happiness

Luminescent NYC quartet Superhuman Happiness will be bringing their insanely pleasing brand of psych pop to Allentown’s Nietzsche’s later on tonight. Brimming with gorgeous boy-girl dual harmonies, warm and fuzzy melodies, and a mightily funky horn reminiscent of Antibalas, Superhuman Happiness are in town promoting their latest release Escape Velocity, and the vibe and good feelings will be potent and utterly irresistible. Opening the show will be blog favorite and Buffalo hip-hop troublemaker Jack Toft. According to the Bandsintown event page, doors open at 7pm, but this is Nietzsche’s so it’s probably closer to 9pm to 10pm, and the cover is unknown, so I’d keep $10 handy along with your dancing shoes…

Tonight: Rochester Invasion Pt. 2

In what is shaping up to be one of the hottest weekends of local music since Herdfest, there exists a bill so Rochesterian, it just might work. Well—actually—it has worked already once before. Tonight, Nietzsche’s will host part two of our Rochester Invasion series, featuring more of the finest talent our neighboring city has to offer. Joining us tonight we have 60’s-tinged party-all-the-timers Harmonica Lewinski, tongue-in-cheek lounge crooners Passive Aggressives Anonymous, multiinstrumental virtuoso Sam Snyder (or OHS, his endearingly shortened project name), and stone-cold rock and rollers The Ginger Faye Bakers. Each of these four acts bring their very own compelling flavor to the table, so don’t miss out. Swing by after Porchfest, the party doesn’t start until 9pm. This lineup is stacked, so bring five bucks so we can get our Rochester friends home safe and sound after closing time.

Yace Booking is having one hell of a weekend. After the “Golf Pop” extravaganza at Dreamland tonight, please head straight to Nietzsche’s for an incredible lineup showcasing Utica buzz-magnets Comfy. Comfy specializes in that special sort of self-deprecating indie rock; think a lo-fi version of Weezer’s Blue Album with all the shredding and ooh-oohs you can stomach. Support tonight comes from Modest Mousy newcomers Passed Out, Sonny Baker’s solo project, and the Geneseo-based Comfy contemporaries in Soft Cough. Doors are at 9pm, music starts at 10pm. Bring $5 and be sure to tip your bartender.

Tonight: Sleepy Hahas

Buffalo psych rock band Sleepy Hahas has continued to expand on its fuzzy brand of indie rock since releasing the album of the week-earning 2014 LP Dull Days. Back in June, the band put out a single “Deep River,” showing off a slightly more noisy, experimental sound that sits somewhere between the Black Keys blues rock and Tame Impala’s more recent electronic explorations. Tonight, the band will perform at Nietzsche’s, marking the beginning of a two week East Coast tour for the band that includes shows in Brooklyn, Boston, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia. Also performing tonight are local indie band M.A.G.S., whose impressive Cellophane debut caught our attention back in February and Buffalo-based garage rockers The Tins, as well as the debut performance from the revamped blues-rockers, Deadwolf. Music starts at 9:30pm. ;

Tonight: Radarada & Death Picnic feat. Short Moscato

Radarada, one of Buffalo’s most prolific hip-hop ensembles, promises to get you turned up tonight at Nietzsche’s. They’re playing all the old favorites that most fans know by heart. It’s no secret these guys are a lot of fun on stage and put on a high-energy show that keeps you buzzing for hours afterwards, but I have to say since I first saw them perform last summer, the band has grown significantly more confident and comfortable in their sound. This forward mobility breaths new life into songs I’ve heard before, making them sound more rich and dynamic with each performance. If you miss out on seeing them tonight, catch them tomorrow at the Elmwood Village Associations’ 20 Block Bash (between West Utica and Hodge) from 5pm -10 pm.
