Batwings Catwings – “Sky Blue Haze”

Garage rock quintet Batwings Catwings sports a Game of Thrones inspired anthem with their latest single “Sky Blue Haze.” Growing up on spoon-fed 90’s indie rock has resulted in the band’s fiery punk sound, and has led to live tour pairings with the likes of Cloud Nothings, METZ, and Future Islands, among others. The track itself features hard-hitting drums, powerhouse guitar lines, and vocals full of gusto. The heavy expression of the song is then counterbalanced by the immersive informality of the song’s video, featuring exclusive footage from the band’s tour in Japan. SNBRN & BLU J – “You Got Me (ft. Cara Frew)”

Mmmm, nothing like a good house jam to kick off the weekend. LA producer SNBRN teamed up with fellow producer BLU J and songstress Cara Frew to put together “You Got Me,” a catchy and hard-hitting slice of West Coast house. Frew’s voice floats beautifully overtop SNBRN and BLU J’s groove heavy production work. “You Got Me” is available on iTunes. we are, et al. – “A Burlesque Chorale”

If you’re in the mood for some ambient alterna-rock, we recommend the mysteriously-named we are, et al. and their new song, “A Burlesque Chorale.” The San Francisco collective is self-described as “world rock,” and brings to mind other acts like Bjork, Anathallo, and Freelance Whales. We were drawn in by their simmering intro and otherwise chill-out vibes. If you like it, head over to Bandcamp for a download. Killer Dale – “Under Control”

This one goes out to the lovers of slacker rock… Killer Dale dusted off their four-track recorder during a hot and wet New Orleans summer. What resulted was “Under Control,” a beautifully “sloppy” (their words) jam that “perfectly captures the time and place that it was birthed.” This one has the kind of lo-fi vibes that are too perfect to be intentional – you have to hear it to believe it. For fans of Whitney and Mac Demarco. If you haven’t sunk too deep into your couch yet, check them out on Bandcamp too. Wolf Saga – “Keep Dancing”

After a year of inactivity, synthpop artist Wolf Saga is back with a vengeance. “Keep Dancing” is true to its title – the song features an utterly danceable beat and pop melodies for days. “Keep Dancing” has vibes that remind us of Foster the People, DNCE, and Grouplove… Give it a listen below. “Keep Dancing” is on iTunes if you’re diggin’ it. Alex Napping – “You’ve Got Me”

Dang! We are very much enjoying the new single from Brooklyn/Austin hybrid act Alex Napping. Fans of Hop Along, Angel Olson, or Courtney Barnett will be into this one – the band combines expressive guitar lines with neurotic drum beats and an angelic, female-fronted vocal delivery. Keep an eye out for their next release, Mise En Place, due out May 5th. “You’ve Got Me” is available via a plethora of services. Hurray for the Riff Raff – The Navigator

For Americana singer-songwriter Alynda Lee Segarra, her career has been a ten-year cross-country journey. Now on her sixth studio album with her indie folk group Hurray for the Riff Raff, that journey has taken her to the upper tier of modern roots music. Titled The Navigator, it’s an album conceptually rooted in her own personal background and story, the product of Puerto Rican ancestry and a Bronx, New York upbringing. The new record sees an expanding of Segarra’s sound, beyond just the country-blues tinged folksiness of the band’s previous releases. Here, these songs’ arrangements burst with the flavors of New Orleans, southwestern and Latin American streets. The Navigator is a mostly autobiographical album, steeped in heritage and self-discovery. There is also a political flair, with lyrics condemning policies and societal notions that negatively effect historically disenfranchised groups of people. The album flows neatly through stylistic changes, a collage of sounds[...]

The Homesick – “Half Aryan”

We’re happy to shed some light on this noisy trio from Holland – The Homesick have crafted a slick noise-pop single that immediately caught our attention. “Half Aryan” is menacing and catchy all at once, combining angular guitar and bass riffs with mysterious, reverbed vocals. If you’re feeling it, add “Half Aryan” to your Spotify playlist. WHARVES – “Man You Want Me To Be”

Austrailian quartet WHARVES are no stranger to buffaBLOG – we dug their last single, “It’s You.” This time around, they’re continuing their trend of excellent psych-tinged alternative rock with their latest offering, “Man You Want Me To Be.” Fans of Beck, Two Door Cinema Club, or WAVVES will be into their wharped take on indie rock (see what we did there?). WHARVES are on iTunes – snag a single or two while you’re at it. Rees Finley – “Talk To Me”

We just can’t get enough of Rees Finley – last time we checked in with him, we were digging his ode to the downtrodden, “The Band Broke Up.” This time around, he’s released another juicy, frenetic pop nugget called “Talk To Me.” This LA solo artist really knows how to write a pop hook – fans of Maroon 5 or Bruno Mars will be into his stuff. “Talk To Me” has a music video too – check it out here. Slowshine – s/t

Based out of Albany, shoegaze rockers Slowshine offer up a slick blend of new-wave elements and somber vocals, all with just the right amount of shoegaze haze on their recent self-titled release. Put out independently by the band on March 7th, the band is made up of Noah Bondy and Cameron Castan, who trade off on guitar, bass and vocals, Connor Dixon on drums, with additional guitar work by Nicholas Worchol. To talk about modern shoegaze would not accurately describe the kind of sound that Slowshine are bringing to the table. Instead of being a wall of sound, that’s been fed through a few dozen different pedals and distorted, fuzzed, and hazed out to near indefinability, Slowshine are much closer to the early 90’s variant of the genre, like Ride’s Nowhere. The band has more in common with Slowdive than in just their name, for instance. There’s a dream-pop like[...]

Locomotive Ghost – “Lightning Bolt”

Locomotive Ghost are a Calgary quartet who make charming indie pop tunes. We recommend “Lightning Bolt,” a whimsical song with lots of start/stop rhythms, piano flavorings, and a powerful chorus. LG combines strong male/harmonies with extra attention paid to melody. Fans of Of Monsters and Men, Eisley, or Gotye will dig this one. You can buy “Lightning Bolt” here. LA BÊTE BLOOMS – “Low Hummer”

LA BÊTE BLOOMS sent us over their VHS-esque video for “Low Hummer” and we want to share it with y’all. This quartet from the UK fuzzes everything out in this shoegaze-tinged slacker rock jam. In essence, if you combined Slowdive and Pixies, you’d get these dudes. They basically drowned themselves to get the footage for this video, so be sure to give it a whirl. Snag “Low Hummer” on Bandcamp while you’re at it.

Catholic Action – “Doing Well”

Upbeat, catchy, and optimistic – a combination of adjectives that don’t typically apply to indie rockers these days. Catholic Action, however, have written something happy here, so we’re happy to toss “Doing Well” your way. This guitar-driven tune from this Glasgow quartet is sure to perk up your day. Take a peek at Catholic Action’s Bandcamp while you’re at it. Donnie Castle – “Oooh”

We’ve all been through a destructive breakup… Well, most of us at least. If so, you can surely relate with Donnie Castle‘s new jam “Oooh.” Donnie combines muted guitar, pulsating synths, and a deep grooving drum beat with altered vocals – the result is something mysterious and vibey for fans of house and synth pop alike. “Oooh” is available on a variety of formats.
