Tonight: Indie Rock Office Holiday Party

Tonight at Mohawk Place hosts a local bill that’s as local and awesome as you can get– Sleepy Hahas, The Naturalists, Aircraft, and Humble Braggers. It’s like Christmas is here early! Or something like that. While these bands really don’t need much of an introduction, we’ll do it anyway. Sleepy Hahas have undergone a couple of lineup changes in the past year, and are poised for the release of a new album on the heels of the “Deep River” single, which has a very cool video to go along with it. The Naturalists are riding high right now on the local attention that they’ve been getting from their latest EP, Home Honey, I’m Hi. If you like grunge, or pizza, give them a listen. (They really like pizza.) Psych garage rock group Aircraft is up next. Their most recent release being an EP, 7 Gems From The Sparkling Void. And[...]

Tonight: Painted Zeros

Hot off the release of their debut full length Floriography (Don Giovanni Records), Brooklyn-based dream fuzz trio Painted Zeros is set to hit Mohawk Place tonight on one of the coolest bills of the dwindling year. Floriography, written and recorded by Zeros frontwoman Katie Lau, is a beautifully textured record with a wide dynamic range–sometimes sweet and delicate, other times in-your-face gritty and explosive. Think Mazzy Star meets Smashing Pumpkins. The onstage iteration of the project is rounded out by drummer Jared Kaner and bassist Jim Hill, the latter formerly of Cottage Jefferson (Rochester!) fame. To make the show particularly homecoming-y, we have the Buffalo-bred, now Brooklyn-based Bethlehem Steel back in town, also hot off a fresh effort that snagged a slot as our Album of the Week last month. Can tonight’s show get any better? Yep. To top it all off, we have three of the best locals Buffalo’s punk scene[...]

Tonight: Nik Turner’s Hawkwind

Tonight, legendary flutist and vocalist Nik Turner will be bringing his edition of the legendary UK space rock band Hawkwind to Buffalo’s own Mohawk Place for a special show featuring San Francisco kraut rock outfit Hedersleben. Nik Turner’s Hawkwind will without a doubt melt some brains at the Mohawk with their heavy sound, science fiction and metaphysical explorations, avant-garde use of strings and wood instruments, and otherworldly vocalizations of the guru-like visionary Turner. Don’t plan on operating heavy machinery for a while after this show. Fusing Tuetonic Krautrock stridency and their own sci-fi apocalyptic space rock musings, the Bay area’s Hedersleben will get the mood set right, along with local favorites Handsome Jack and Hawkwind fans Malarchuk. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention that Hawkwind featured a young Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, so nostalgic Motorhead fans won’t want to miss this. Tickets are $10, with doors at 7pm and show at 8pm.

Tonight: November Reign

With an evening full of shows, Mohawk Place is definitely a spot to include in your Saturday night itinerary. Starting at 9pm, local DJs Ryan McMullen (JOHNS, Alpha Hopper) and Patrick Simons will be spinning a large variety of tunes into the night, with hardcore heavy sets that will include punk, post-punk, thrash, garage, psych, and everything in between. Not to mention, its all on vinyl. Doors open at 8pm, with tunes at 9pm.  With a cover of only $2, how could you go wrong?

Tonight: Peelander-Z

Peelander-Z lands at Mohawk tonight with Super Killer Robots and Jamie and the Debt. Peelander, from New York/outer space via Japan, are pure punk rock fun, with a raucous live show. The last time the group rolled through town, the bonkers show included a good deal of the audience on percussion and Goo Goo Dolls member Robby Takac sitting in on guitar. Local robots Super Killer Robots have been busy on the scene circuit will join the far out antics. Buffalo DIY hero Jamie and the Debt will open. Tonight doors are at 7pm, music at 8pm, and the cover is $8.

Tonight: Sidewalking Plays Psychocandy

Today marks the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest and most influential pop records of all-time: The Jesus and Mary Chain’s Psychocandy. Arriving on the scene in the mid-80s, quibbling Scottish brothers Jim and William Reid took the beautiful harmonies of 60’s pop bands like The Beach Boys and The Velvet Underground and bathed them in an unholy mess of noise and feedback to craft a unique sound unheard before. Over the course of 14 tracks, the brothers would set a precedent not just for future artists, but for future genres as well. Whether it’s noise rock, dreampop, or shoegaze, all owe a great debt to Psychocandy. And while the band have not been back since their infamous 2012 Canalside show that sent clueless plebs away in droves complaining about the noise and sounds, tonight offers a great experience for the diehards. Buffalo’s one and one elite JAMC cover[...]

Tonight: Jonny Two Bags

On a rainy Tuesday night I’m talking music with Jonny Two Bags, guitarist for the legendary punk band Social Distortion. He is about to embark on tour in support of his debut album, Salvation Town. Jonny speaks humbly about the recording process, discussing the uncertainty of recording as a solo artist. “I wasn’t even sure what it meant to take my songs, and for the first time in my life, record them myself without the input or compromise that comes from working with other people, or in a band” he tells me. I pick up something in his voice as we speak. It’s the sound of confidence that wasn’t always there. Jonny’s journey to become a solo artist wasn’t easy. Whether it was not being able to find the right players or getting the traction to make it happen, self-doubt played a part in the background. As Jonny tells it, part[...]

Screaming Females at Mohawk Place (11/03/15)

Another night, another insane show at the Mohawk Place, and this one literally people hanging off of the ceiling (see below). Buffalo’s Hot Tip started the night off, showcasing their straight up spooky style of punk. Potty Mouth soon followed, treating the crowd to an awesome set of their pop inspired punk jams. And it came as no surprise that Screaming Females’ style melodic punk had the crowd in an absolute frenzy by the end of their set. Check out some shots from the night below, and a full gallery of the night’s photos, click here. Potty Mouth Screaming Females

Tonight: Screaming Females

New Brunswick’s finest rock and roll band, Screaming Females, hits Mohawk Place tonight at 8pm. With unique brooding vocals and catchy dancey beats, they’ve got all your modern new wave needs covered. The trio recently performed a viral cover of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” (because Ryan Adams can’t have all the fun) for AV Club’s online series, “Under Cover.” Check it out below. Potty Mouth is bringing their bubblegum punk as the supporting touring act. With hits like last year’s “Black and Studs,” Potty Mouth is for all rebellious teens everywhere. Read our interview with the band here. Local rockstars Hot Tip will open. It’s $14 at the door for true punks.

Tonight: Futurebirds

Athens, Georgia’s Futurebirds bring their laid back and stoned out brand of country rock to Mohawk Place tonight along with Burlington roots rockers Waylon Speed and local folk rockers Hokan. In town promoting their latest release, Hotel Parties, Futurebirds are a riot of chiming, cascading guitars and sweet harmonies, and for fans of Brooklyn it-band Phosphorescent, this is a can’t miss. Vermont’s own Waylon Speed, meanwhile, is straight ahead, ecstatic American roots music that’s a transcendent tonic for your clapping hands, dancing bones, and world weary soul. Tickets are $12, doors are at 7pm and Hokan gets the show started right around 8pm.

Soul Patch w/ Sixties Future at Mohawk Place (10/30/15)

For the second year in a row, we teamed up with Buffalo alt-rock cover kings Soul Patch for sold out, Halloween party banger. With buzzing local rockers Sixties Future opening, Soul Patch proceeded to unleash two nostalgia heavy sets on to Mohawk Place’s packed crowd. Check out some select shots from the show below, and for a Brendan O’Connor’s full gallery from Friday night’s party, click here. Soul Patch Sixties Future Photos by Brendan O’Connor

Tonight: Soul Patch

Keith Buckley is a man of many talents. Of course, you may know him as the local guy who yells a lot as the singer of hardcore act, Every Time I Die. Other than that, he leads a fairly simple life: getting tattoos, hanging out at the Pink, giving out wise and loving advice in The Public, writing for Comedy Central shorts… and of course, dressing up like Kurt Cobain and covering 90’s alternative hits. You can see the latter of those things happen tonight at Mohawk Place as Soul Patch headlines buffaBLOG’s now annual Halloween party. Soul Patch is of course fronted by Keith, with Steve Micciche (also of ETID), Niko Georgiadis, Joey Dynamite, Jeff Schaller, and Jessika Schreiber joining the party. Sixties Future, who have been making plenty of waves locally in 2015 with their indie-alt rock sound, will be opening. If you haven’t seen them yet, now[...]

Tonight: The Bones of J.R. Jones

J.R. Linabury, the one-man creative force behind the era-bending blues tunes of solo project The Bones of J.R. Jones, will take the iconic stage of Mohawk Place later tonight. “Solo” is a word that only goes so far when describing the project; Linabury may be the only body on stage during performances, but somehow he doesnt appear alone. He transcends the one man/one guitar stigma, crafting swirling folk songs using guitar, banjo, hi-hat, and bass drum in a commendably simultaneous fashion. The whole package is astonishingly honest, and shatters the boundaries and limiting capabilities of “solo” projects as they’re typically defined. Joining J.R. on tonight’s bill are the harmony kings in local psyche act Deadwolf and the soulful musings of Jacob Peter (Humble Braggers, Dreambeaches), also of Buffalo. Doors open promptly at 7pm with a $5 cover.

Tonight: Black Milk

Detroit rapper/producer Black Milk has proven to be one of his city’s most formidable hip hop artists over the last decade or so. Heavily influenced by A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Motor City beat legend J Dilla, Black Milk brings his soulful beats and rhymes to Mohawk Place tonight with live band Nat Turner. Milk is a frequent collaborator with the city’s best, including songs with Slum Village, Royce Da 5’9,” Elzhi, and the 2011 project with Danny Brown titled The Black & Brown EP. Last year he dropped his sixth album, If There’s Hell Below, with notable indie hip hop label Fat Beats. Filled with more of Milk’s smooth jazz sounds, Hell Below includes features from Cali’s Blu and Houston legend Bun B. Milk’s tracklist should include many songs from the record, and all his tracks will be complimented by the energy of the live band.[...]

Tonight: Pinky Doodle Poodle

Its Robby Takac’s Buffalo tonight at Mohawk Place. Pinky Doodle Poodle, all the way from Tokyo, is back to record a third album at Takac’s Good Charamel Records studio, and to make the most of their visit, will be hitting the stage at Mohawk later on. This band rocks like old school punk. Are they the Japanese Lemuria? When I saw Super Killer Robots at Music is Art my first impression of them was they were a typical hard rock band with one tall robot member. My first impression still stands. Lo-fi local punk band Boy Scouts will also open. Music begins at 8pm with a cover of $5.
