Mags Drops Debut Singles

A couple weeks ago, we wrote about The Slums EP, a new group led by The Malones ex-frontman, Steven Floyd. He is not the only former member with the creative bug brewing. Former Malones bassist, Elliott Douglas, formed a new solo project of his own under the moniker, Mags. Unlike the Slums harder, more aggressive sound, Mags continues the crunchy catchiness that the Malones left off with last year. Mixed and mastered with Paul Besch of Quiet Country Audio, “I Won’t Talk,” is an indie rock jam, easily syncable for your fall playlist.

Such Gold Premieres New Single, “Faced”

Arguably one of the most popular up-and-coming pop-punk bands in upstate New York, Such Gold released its new single today via Alternative Press. The track “Faced,” is a great sample of what is to come with the band’s upcoming album, The New Sidewalk (Out November 10 via Razor and Tie). Listen to the song below and make sure to catch Such Gold on November 21st as the quartet plays the Waiting Room with Four Year Strong, Transit, and Seaway.

Sea Oleena – “Island Cottage”

It’s rare that a song I’m blindly listening to can be so capture that I just stare at a motionless video but, Sea Oleena’s “Island Cottage” does just that. The song is a little dated, close to a year and a half old, but luckily music has no expiration date. It is beautifully somber, encompassing, and gorgeous. Fans of Beach House, Youth Lagoon, or even Iron and Wine would dig it. Check out “Island Cottage” below.

The Slums Release Highly Anticipated EP

Is it an EP if it’s three songs? A question that often keeps me up late at night. Anyways, we have been anticipating the release from Buffalo-based four-piece, The Slums, since we caught wind of their formation earlier this year. Comprised of past members of The Malones, Scales, Strangers, The Boy and His Machine, and recorded with Paul Besch at Quiet Country Audio, the debut already commanded respect long before the release of any material. On surface level, it seems as though The Slums pick right up where The Malones left things with the first track on the EP, “The Devil,” which could have easily been track seven on the band’s widely popular 2013 release. Where The Slums really start to make it’s identity is with the second and third tracks, “Hot Skins” and “Sore Eyes,” which introduce lead singer Steven Floyd’s growling manic and throatily desperate vocals, a sound[...]

Anthony Del Plato Releases New Song

If you’re even the casual buffaBLOG reader, you know that we sort of have a thing for Anthony Del Plato. Between his phenomenal debut EP, 8 Old Vines, his apocalyptic themed follow-up, we sill still be here tomorrow, and most recently his project with Crows and Jays’ Brad Kujawski, titled Strings and Chords, Del Plato has received 100% positive praise from the buffaBLOG HQ. His latest single, “Numbers,” is no different. The song’s formula is much like previous Del Plato works, with solemn Minus the Bear-like vocals, lyrics that read like a coded diary entry, and a cohesiveness that many strive for, but few achieve. Check out “Numbers” below. Heavy Rotation: TEENWOLF

Look at that advert to the right. This is what this post is going to be hyping. This Friday evening, buffaBLOG will be curating a showcase of some of the very best up-and-coming DJs in Buffalo. On Monday, we featured a write up Spooky Business’ Rick Jameson. Yesterday we spotlighted DJ Pizza Pizza (and today a little bit too). Wednesday is DJ TEENWOLF’s turn. DJ TEENWOLF might be on a lot of radars due to his past collaborations with Allentown’s favorite alternative emcee, Jack Topht. Prior to this, the well-versed DJ resided in New York City, producing indie hits for popular hipster rap group (PRE-DAS RACIST), Ninjasonik. Upon TEENWOLF’s arrival back west, he teamed up with some of the minds behind Toats Orig, playing some of their parties. Without a doubt, the WOLF will deliver a bumping set this Friday. Doors are at 10pm with a $5 cover.

Space Wolves and Lesionread Featured on Chicago Public Access

Last spring, two Buffalo acts, Lesionread and Space Wolves, ventured west to take part in Chicago-based public access show, Chic-a-Go-Go. The cult show has billed itself as a “dance show for kids of all ages,” having past guests such as Dan Deacon, Fugazi, TV on the Radio, and Everlast. With teased instagram videos leaked a couple months back, the performances have been anxiously awaited by many in the buffaBLOG office. In the first video, Lesionread and his merry band of morphsuits bring his converted work bench-turned technology holder to an audience of unaccompanied minors/cool dads. Spazzy and flamboyant, the performance is high-energy much like Lesionread’s usual routine. What is not par is the weirdo popper’s unusually shy demeanor post-performance interview. Perhaps all of the dancing children/TV cameras made him a little nervous. Following Lesionread (or the order I watched the videos) was fuzz-surf duo, Space Wolves. Although the band is already[...]

Tonight: Mark Sultan of The King Khan & BBQ Show

Shaken Stylus is taking over the backroom at Hardware (245 Allen St) tonight, bringing their rock and roll touch to a rather docile night on Allen. Formerly of Canadian garage duo, King Khan & BBQ Show, Mark Sultan‘s solo work is a mix of retro doo-wop meets the basement DIY punk scene. The bill is pretty rotund, with support from Buffalo’s favorite funk-punk something-tet, Mallwalkers, the ultra-vague DUDES,  and hardcore leaning Fleshy Mounds. Doors are $8 with a start time at 10pm.

The Receiver – “All Burn”

I’ve been a fan of The Receiver ever since they stopped by my college radio station at St. Bonaventure University in October 2006. The duo was set to play a show in Buffalo and was just doing some “filler” tour spots in support of their debut full-length, Decades.  After doing an in-studio at WSBU, the band packed up their gear only to find out their Buffalo gig had been canceled due to a freak snowstorm that paralyzed the city for close to a week. A long way from home,  keyboardist/singer/bassist Casey Cooper and brother Jesse Cooper (drums) found themselves trapped and without another gig for four days in Olean, NY. So they stayed with me. This week, The Receiver’s set was captured by The Mug and Brush Sessions, a live video series that apparently takes place in a barbershop. The first song released from the session,”All Burn,” continues with the band’s[...]

midnight Releases Followup Single

Rochester R&B crooner, midnight,  is back with his followup single to last spring’s slow jam of the season, “Adonis.” His latest single, “1v1,” sticks to the same format, sensual falsetto vocals over downtempo electronic backing. Although the song title sounds like it’s about a basketball game, I’m pretty sure it’s about banging. Fans of Kanye’s A Twisted Dark Fantasy, D’Angelo, and How to Dress Well would be the pretty hip to have this on their playlist. Supergoner Post New Material

Buffalo quartet, Supergoner, posted late last week their new song”Glass Cannon.” The single is a 90’s flavored indie rock gem that encapsulates the vibe and feel of the era. Fans of Cloud Nothings, Dinosaur Jr., and Superchunk would dig this sound. Half of the members of Supergoner are formerly of defunct rock band, Concubine, so that’s why the vocals sound semi-familiar. Check out “Glass Cannon” below. A Hotel Nourishing Releases First Single From Empty Gesture EP

I remember my introduction to the Buffalo music scene. I drove from my hometown in central New York to catch a glimpse of Say Hi to Your Mom in the dark Sound Lab basement in the middle of a snowstorm. The Wishes and the Glitch was an amazing album. Anyways, upon arrival, I realized I was in Buffalo like an hour before the show even opened it’s doors (Buffalo time was foreign to me) so I had to wait outside in my car for an hour, then inside alone in a booth for an hour, then standing up front until eventually I caught the first band, A Hotel Nourishing. I initially had thought they were a touring band based on how tight they were as a duo, with Cameron Rogers’ lightning fast, thunderous drumming coupled with Sonny Baker’s wry energy and sprawling guitars. The night capped off with me nervously introducing[...]

Strawberry Boys Release First Single, “Got It”

Earlier this week, we received an e-mail from Rochester-based electro-pop twosome, Strawberry Boys. In the message, the sender described Strawberry Boys’ sound as a “boy band but serious.” The single, “Got It,” is slow building, but soon evolves into an Architecture in Helsinki-like backing coupled with vocals of Proto Zoa, the fictional band from Disney’s Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century. Although Strawberry Boys prefer to release their music under a veil of mystery, I would not be surprised if familiar names are behind the project. Check out “Got It” underneath these words.

buffaBLOG Premiere: Work Drugs – “Free To Roam”

We’ve been a fan of Work Drugs at buffaBLOG since their 2011 sleepy dream-pop single, “Rad Racer,” so we were beyond excited to jump on an opportunity to premiere their latest single, “Free To Roam.” The band is comprised of electro-pop, Philadelphia-by-way-of- Florida, synth workhorses, Thomas Crystal and Benjamin Louisiana. “Free To Roam” is a featured track on band’s  eighth album in four years, RUNAWAYS, with a set release in early October.  The single, from a flavor sense, is more in the realm of “Double LIfe” than “Rad Racer.” It’s bouncy, carefree,  and accessible, similar to if you let Two Door Cinema Club produce a Phoenix album after sitting down with the latest Cherub release. For a local recommendation, they would be perfectly nestled somewhere between JOYWAVE and Humble Braggers. The subject matter of “Free To Roam” is about young love, hitting the country side, and discovering a new color with[...]

Tonight: Morning Arms

Tonight, buffaBLOG’s favorite basement venue, the Ninth Ward (341 Delaware Ave.), will play host to dreamy indie Chicago sextet, Morning Arms. The band’s sound is comparable to a female-fronted Ra Ra Riot with a morphined Los Campesinos. For a local touch, Applenium would have been the perfect opener for the band’s vibe.  Also on the bill is Steak and Cake Records’ MINK as well as the Etchings. Doors are 7pm with an 8pm start time. There will be someone behind a table asking for $5.
