Raining Again – “Oh, Bother!”

Formed as the reincarcate of UK indie pop act, Marines, Raining Again released their new single “Oh, Bother!” at the tail end of 2018. The single starts with an accessible sing along melody, leading into a growly verse about growing up. “I’m going to break my friends proud, and I’ll run this town, and I will be someone that you talk about,” growls the lead singer in an early 2000s emo styling a la Hey Mercedes or Brand New. It’s a keeper for your January 2019 playlists. Check it out below.

5 Best Artist Discoveries of 2016

As part of our year-end wrap up, we decided to make a list of our top five (non-local/regional) artists that we were pumped to find in 2016. Car Seat Headrest  Looking back on 2016 from an indie music fan perspective, this year will be seen as the year that Car Seat Headrest first broke. The Seattle-based now-quartet/project headed by Will Toledo, had a huge year, breaking last winter with hype from major online tastemakers such as Pitchfork and All Songs Considered. The band’s introspective full-length Teens of Denial (Matador Records) offered a glimpse of Toledo’s wallflower nature and deeply reflective lyrics, coupled with raw guitars and minimal synths to make a perfectly packaged indie rock masterpiece. Jessy Lanza  Hamilton, Ontario-based songwriter, Jessy Lanza, made a blip on our radar with last spring’s sophomore break-out album, Oh No. Co-produced by Junior Boys’ Jeremy Greenspan, the retro-pop sound is a mix between French[...]

If you aren’t up on your local history, the Temple of Music is where President McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition in 1901. Recorded at GCR Studios, “Carry Me Away” is a song about an angel with too weak of wings to fly eventually delves into some serious self-reflection. This track has some definite Nirvana influences with some Veruca Salt leanings. The Temple of Music is set for a yet to be determined 2017 release date. Socks – “Forevermore”

Modesto, California-based indie rock act Socks, debuted their track via the world wide web last week and it has been stuck on repeat throughout our Labor Day weekend. “Forevermore” is all about the honey moon phase of a relationship. Nothing can go wrong and your heart is just melting constantly. Although the band is still in their infancy (playing together for only five months), the band has a forthcoming EP, expected to be out at some point in November. Fans of Mac Demarco, Summer Salt, or Pleistocene (for a local spin) will like the band’s sunny and sweet demeanor and knack for hooks. You’ll be singing along to notes you probably can’t hit, but that won’t stop you. Check it out. HVNNIBVL Drops New Single

Twenty-year-old singer/producer and University at Buffalo student HVNNIBVL makes infectious dance music with pop-leaning vocals. Having released his maximalist track, “Lose,” for the heralded production collective Hegemon, the artist is set to debut his newest track, “Let Me.” Beginning with a straightforward pop style, HVNNIBVL includes vocal solos, euphoric, percussive breakdowns before winding down with a melodic outro that gives the listener an idea of the inclusive, genre-spanning production the artist favors. Super American Grows Up in New Video

One of our favorite pseudo pop bands, Super American, revealed yesterday their new single and video for “Sloppy Jazz.” The track is much what we have come to expect from lead singer Matt Cox’ holdings – literate story telling with a touch of “Wait, what? I don’t follow,” with a super hook. However, the band’s latest effort has distanced itself a  bit from the band’s earlier pop-punk leanings. There is much more of an alt-rock, indie pop vibe. Don’t worry, Super American still throws in their patented group chorus and duel vocals, which at this point they have seemed to master with the addition of Lovey’s Fred Cimatto and Pat Feeley. Shot by ex-All Blondes Go to Heaven drummer Andy DeLuca, the video cuts in and out of a high school dance-like photo opp all with a nineties tinge. “Sloppy Jazz” will be available for purchase on September 6th on Spotify and Apple[...]

Jouska – “Marcel”

Albany-based ghost rock quartet, Jouska, have slowly begun rotating into Buffalo’s local music scene. The band has an upcoming show on September 10th with Super American and Cooler in support of their yet-to-be released Topiary. “Marcel” is the lead single off of the album and a great first step into Jouska’s repertoire. “Marcel” is a highly introspective track where Jouska’s lead-singer Doug Dulgarian reflects on growing up around stifled creativity. The song comes off as a diary entry, with allusions to heartbreak and getting older. The experience is both depressing and rewarding. Life changes, and people move on. Fans of M. Ward or cryptic Brand New will enjoy Jouska’s latest. Topiary is set for release on September 6th, but you can peep “Marcel” below and catch their upcoming set at Nietzsche’s next weekend.

Bangbang – “Grabbed”

Southeast London electro-pop duo, Bangbang, released a real earworm earlier in the month with their track “Grabbed.”Bangbang is a fairly new project with its members originating from opposite sides of the world (Australia and southern England). “Grabbed” is the lead single off the pair’s self-titled EP, which you can stream over here. Under the surface, the track is about trying to take over a dream and control it, becoming fully lucid. Fans of Metronomy, Clubfeet, or NZCA Lines would be into this one. Jam out to “Grabbed” in the easily streamable link below. RESIDUELS – “Gravity”

Fresh of a west coast tour with punk legends, The Buzzcocks, the Philly-based trio, RESIDUELS found time to release a new single and video combination. The track dubbed over the stock footage, “Gravity,” is entirely improvised from a studio session. If you are into the jammy driving psychedelic aspects of Thee Oh Seas,  Ty Segall, or Antelope then you would be a fan of RESIDUELS’ latest.  Check out the track “Gravity” below.

Tonight: Yes Yes

A new pop-up space in the heart of Allentown is set to launch it’s inaugural showcase this evening. Dubbed The Modeling Factory, the space will host two stripped down acts, Yes Yes and Andrew Sblendorio. Sblendorio is a familiar face coming all the way from Utica. He plays double duty as part of frequent Buffalo-touring powerpop act, Comfy. His solo material is quite opposite, where he plays with atmospheric sounds as well as bleeps and bloops for fans of Brian Eno or Fourtet.  He will be joined by Alexis Aguam who will be helping with the visualization of Sblendorio’s music. Also on the bill is hyper-folk musician Mike “Yes Yes” Ersing. Yes Yes is a Buffalo-native, and has been in and out of the local scene for nearly a decade. Recently, Yes Yes was living in South Korea, working as a musician playing shows and festivals and exposing the native population to[...]
