Tonight: Buffalo Sex Change

Tonight, catch two bands from the far-off city of Rochester, NY; Buffalo Sex Change, and honeymoonphase. While they may share a home base, they certainly each have a unique sound. Buffalo Sex Change is an energetic post-punk, garage rock duo, with a sound reminiscent of Buddy Holly fronting a shoegaze band. Their most recent release was 2018’s Searching Hands, which was released on Admirable Traits Records. Right out of the gate, the title track grabs you with a noisy riff, and really sets the tone for the album. While the tone may shift from track to track, there is an intensity and energy that is effortlessly carried through the album. With dirty, danceable hook, this will most certainly appeal to fans of Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground. Alternately, honeymoonphase brings a slightly darker, brooding sound to the table. They recently released two tracks in anticipation of their full album,[...]

Buffalo Sex Change – “Creature”

Rochester rockabilly duo Buffalo Sex Change stir things up with a zesty new track, “Creature.” Their bluesy vocals and jangly guitar lines drive the track forward, invoking theatrical delivery and an extra zing. The track has some classic, shined up rock and roll elements, meeting gritty vaudevillian vibes with nostalgic affection. Lyrically, they mull over the harsh realities of natural selection, while tragically falling prey to its attraction. The single’s video representation admirably fits the scene, playfully staging the lyrics and dancing it all out. Feast your eyes on their predatory concept below.

Tonight: The Eaves

Tonight Nietzsche’s hosts a crazy good lineup of local and regional favorites headlined by enigmatic American rockers and true tabula rasa The Eaves. Nihilistic Rochester art garage rock duo Buffalo Sex Change will also be on hand to kick jams off their hotly anticipated and just released yesterday sophomore rock out Searching Hands, while local psychedelic  punk locals Velvet Bethany will be introducing you to their serious riffs and beguiling harmonies. Rounding out the night are the raucous indie quartet, Passed Out. Doors open at 9pm and cover is $5.

Buffalo Sex Change Releases Title Track “Searching Hands”

“Searching Hands,” a new single from Rochester-based garage rock duo Buffalo Sex Change, is chock-full of vim and vigor. The tune would fit right in with the rugged nature of Vietnam War-era rock ‘n’ roll—such grittiness and uninhibited raw power reminds one of something proto-punk bands like The Stooges or MC5 might’ve released to the public back then. “Searching Hands” might even sound to some like a train about to run off the tracks, chugging along nearer and nearer to light speed. Its depiction of uncontrollable lust and sexual tension is carried out just as superbly in its bursting-at-the-seems instrumental cannonade as its concise but striking lyrics. Catch Buffalo Sex Change’s next show in Buffalo on April 21st at Nietzsche’s and be on the lookout for their new album out April 20th. In the meantime, listen to the song below:

Shows We Shot in January

While buffaBLOG was on break the past month, blog photographer Brendan O’Connor was out there doing what he does best: taking pictures of bands. While he didn’t have a chance to shoot any major national touring acts, he took the time to photograph some local Buffalo acts, and went out on a little weekend tour with local post- rock outfit Tomoreaux. On tour, he caught some incredible acts such as Albany’s existential goth poppers Slowshine,  Rochester lo-fi duo Buffalo Sex Change, and the stellar up-and-coming pop punk young guns Prince Daddy and the Hyena. In addition, Brendan made a couple trips out to Fredonia where he also had the chance to shoot buffaBLOG favorites, M.A.G.S. and Sixties Future, as well as Fredonia psych-rockers Mooses. To kick the post off, though, we’ll start off with one of Yace Booking’s best events to date, which served as Tomoreaux’s album release party, featuring Cooler, Passed Out, and Brimstone Blondes.  You can click HERE for a[...]

Buffalo Sex Change Shares Video for “Gender Unknown”

Over a year after dropping their self titled, debut LP via Dadstache Records, Rochester post-punk garage duo Buffalo Sex Change has shared the music video for one of the record’s stand out tracks, “Gender Unknown.” The lo-fi, VHS-esque clip, which was directed by Brooklyn visual artist Kristen Felicetti, finds members Phil Pierce and Clayton Eddy performing the rockabilly flavored tune under colorful video glitches while spliced with retro work out tutorials. Check it out at the bottom of the post. In further BSXC news, the pair contributed a new track, titled “Glori Ann,” to the recently released KNDY benefit compilation. All proceeds from the album sales go towards the recovery of Glori Alexander, the sister of vocalist/guitarist Pierce, following her successful kidney transplant. Listen to the song and get further info here. Catch up our review of the band’s Album of the Week honored debut here and watch the video for “Gender Unknown” below. Photo by[...]

Buffalo Sex Change’s Phil Pierce Releases KDNYLUV Compilation

Musicians from Rochester and beyond are coming together to help a family member of one of their own. Glori Alexandar, the sister of Buffalo Sex Change guitarist/co-vocalist Phil Pierce, recently underwent a successful kidney transplant this past weekend. While she is recovering well from the surgery, Glori still has a long and unfortunately expensive road ahead of her. In order to help with the mounting medical bills, her brother Phil has curated a 16 track benefit compilation in hopes to aid with the costs. The compilation features tracks, many which were previously unreleased, from some of Rochester’s top acts in Pleistocene, Howlo, Auld Lang Syne, MD Woods, Passive Aggressives Anonymous, and more, in addition to contributions from BSXC buddy Shana Falana, Buffalo native and Asthmatic Kitty artist DM Stith, and other acts from around New York State. Dave Drago of 1809 Studios, as well as Pleistocene’s Stephen Roessner, handled the[...]

Tonight: Rochester Invasion

As part of Infringement Festival, buffaBLOG has put together a sort of “Rochester Invasion” if you will. We’ve curated a genre-spanning selection of some of Rochester’s finest, including: electro-synth masters KOPPS; the powerpoppers in The Demos; surf-tinged garage from Buffalo Sex Change (PS, nice name guys); dreamy 60s-poppers Howlo; all rounded out by Hannah Weidner and the Doorway Talkers. We Buffalonians will bring the wings to snack on if you Rochester-bros will bring some Kodak film on which to capture our debaucherous night. Ah, unity. See you there.

Passive Aggressives Anonymous Releases New Single “Many at Once”

Tongue-in-cheek, Rochester crooner John Valenti and his band Passive Aggressives Anonymous have released a new single this morning, titled “Many at Once,” the follow up to the group’s late 2014 EP, Not so long songs of longing. If this is your first introduction to Valenti, think laid back Father John Misty showmanship meets Jens Lekman heart on his sleeve charm. Valenti and crew have the ability to romance you right off your feet, all while grinning ear to ear. PAA’s whimsical new song details the pros to keeping your options open when it comes to the opposite sex, all while striking riffs and fluttering strings back the dreamy, lounge ready number. In other Valenti news, the songwriter recently directed a clip for Kingston, NY musician Shana Falana. The video features appearances by fellow Roch musicans and Valenti buddies Buffalo Sex Change and just premiered yesterday on Paste. Check it out here.[...]

Tonight: Shana Falana

The Hive is set to host one of the most impressive bills of the month tonight in its tiny DIY attic. Headlining the bill is buzzing Kingston, NY-based duo, Shana Falana. The act is currently on a multi-month tour, supporting the April 7th release of Set Your Lightning Fire Free via Team Love Records (Tilly and the Wall, Roz and the Rice Cakes). If you are a fan of shoegaze with powerful female vocals, you should probably be at The Hive. Supporting Falana is Rochester lo-fi tag team, Buffalo Sex Change, indie-pop trio, The Tins, and a stripped down acoustic set from a hibernating Aircraft. $6 doors and it’s super early. Like 7pm early. If you don’t know where the Hive is, I would ask someone who does.

Tonight: Kevin Morby

Fans of singer/songwriters have a great night ahead of them should they decide to head down to Mohawk Place to see Kevin Morby. Formerly of Woods and The Babies, Morby has recorded two albums as a solo artist. The most recent, Still Life, was released last Fall by Woodsist Records. Morby’s music is easy going and similar to Cass McCombs, before he got all jammy. Ryley Walker is currently touring in support of his upcoming third album, Primrose Green, coming out at the end of the month through Dead Oceans. Mixing elements of jazz and folk, Walker’s performance promises to be an engaging one. The Rochester based two piece, Buffalo Sex Change, rounds out tonight’s lineup with garage-y shoegaze. All in all, seems like a great way enjoy the balmy weather we are having today. Doors open for tonight’s show at 8pm with a cover of $12

Tonight: Bryan Johnson & Family

The folks over at Admirable Traits have put together a juicy bill for the first weekend of 2015, a line-up stacked with local greats to take place at Mr. Goodbar at 10pm. If you’re like me, come January 2nd, a serious break from the holidaze is needed. That’s exactly where Bryan Johnson & Family comes in. Armed to the teeth with energetic surf-pop songs, these kings-of-all-things-fun will clean your holiday slate and teleport your tired soul into that sweet, sweet summer breeze. I can almost smell the toxic waters of Lake Erie already. Also on tonight’s bill you’ll find the electro-pop stylings of ambient rockers Humble Braggers and the delicious raw-retro sounds of Rochester post-punk duo Buffalo Sex Change. First Friday of 2015 + Mr. Goodbar’s tantalizingly extensive beer selection + just a buck-a-band cover? Don’t be a fool.

Buffalo Sex Change

I like Rochester. It’s a nice place. There’s a bunch of bands from there that I really, really like. I’ve been to a lot of really good shows in and around Rochacha, a term I say with love. Being in Western New York, their food is good (once you get further east on the 90 it gets dodgier). So yeah, I’m a little stoked for the show this Saturday at the Bug Jar. One of the bands I’m keen to check out live is Rochester lo-fi garage rock duo Buffalo Sex Change. These guys, Clayton Eddy and Phil Pierce, are bringing it in from way out there with a skeevy, raw sound that’s ideal for petty crime like shoplifting meat by sticking it down your pants, sniffing glue, lewd conduct, driving recklessly, and spicing up an already stocked bill. The pair will be batting second in our lineup Saturday night, following[...]
