Tonight: Andrew W.K.

Motivational speaker, weatherman, political commentator, advice columnist, and of course, noted party animal, Andrew W.K., will bring his annual holiday show to Broadway Joe’s this evening. The songwriter has been one of rock music’s most engaging forces since the early 2000’s, constantly clad in his signature white shirt/pant combo (and maybe a touch of blood), and finely riding the line of seriousness and stupidity. His arena rock meets nu-metal style has gone on to soundtrack a variety of films, cartoons, and video games, all while maintaining a feel good, carefree and endless party lifestyle. W.K. will once again be traveling solo for his show in the Heights, normally armed with only a microphone, keyboard, and backing tracks, just as he did at Waiting Room in 2013. While nostalgia heavy, that show left audience members confused, angry, and wanting more, but with the holidays around the corner, perhaps the rocker will[...]

Just Announced: Andrew W.K.

If you are looking to party this holiday season, then look no further to…Broadway Joe’s? Yes, everyone’s favorite University Heights haunt will be hosting cult leader / party legend, Andrew W.K. In a freshly  announced event this afternoon, the rock and roller announced he will be making a solo stop in Western New York on Tuesday, December 7th. If you’ve seen Andrew W.K. in the past as a full-band, his solo shows are still a party, just with only one person on the stage. This will be W.K.’s  the 8th annual Christmas show and since he is immortal, maybe it will be the first of many. Tickets are available at Ticket Fly for $25 and you should probably get them soon. We predict a sellout.

Tonight: JoyCut

It’s not often that a band out of Italy plays Buffalo. It’s even rarer an Italian electronic band plays Broadway Joe’s, a venue usually associated with Punk’n Tots showcases and nu-metal. Tonight, Joycut is set to make their Buffalo debut as  part of the last leg of their tour, which was preceded by a European tour.  Needless to say, 2014 has definitely made use of the duo’s passports. Joycut’s sound is a dash industrial with a splatter of well-produced delicate and hypnotic electronica. This band’s performance is very lively, consisting of two live drummers/multi-percussionists tweaking computers and samples to make a cohesively gripping sound. If you like Sleep Party People, Fuck Buttons, Matthew Dear, or even Bergs Sans Nipple, than you should probably be at this show. I haven’t been able to come across a door time or cover, so let’s just say normal Friday night showtime and normal Friday[...]

Tonight: Punk N’ Tots

What’s new pussy cat? Not much, just Punk N’ Tots at Broadway Joe’s. Well it’s not really new, however, what is new is the Alpha Hopper/Hot Tip tour which kicks off tonight, as if you needed another reason go see some west side punk and munch on tater tots. The mini four day jaunt will take Alpha Hopper and Hot Tip to Brooklyn, Providence, and Ithaca, but not before kicking things off tonight in Buffalo. Also on the bill tonight will be BLOBS, which will be bringing the out-there shit for all you freakazoids out there. What else would you expect from a band who is compiled of members from Bad People and Fleshy Mounds? Additionally there will be the new outfit, Space is Haunted, as well as False Paul’s final show. Doors at 9pm, 18+, so make sure you bring your ID, even if you do look like a drunken[...]

Tonight: Vaggie Fest – Day 1

So in case you have been living underneath a rock, or in a sinkhole, you probably already know that there is a ‘lady band’ fest going on this weekend, under the very fitting title of Vaggie Fest. Instead of a single day festival, which for the past three years has been happening at the Polish Library on the East Side of Buffalo, year five of Vaggie Fest will be expanded to three days. Day one starts this evening at Broadway Joe’s as part of their Punk N Tots series, returning to Joe’s again tomorrow night, followed by the festival concluding at Ocean Garden Oriental Foods on Saturday afternoon over on Niagara Street. Tonight at Broadway Joe’s, three day passes will be available for $20 (or $7 if you can only make tonight), which will get you a cool handmade ticket and a shiny bracelet if you so choose to indulge[...]

Tonight: Delay

I quoted a guy named Jordan Nittoli on Monday and goddamnit, I’ll do it again, if only because this is actually the gig he was talking about: “Buffalo rools cuz there are a lot of gigs every week : ^ ).” Tonight, another installment of Punk ‘N Tots goes down over at Broadway Joe’s. Columbus’s Delay will be making their way over from Akron on the second stop of a two-month tour. Their latest release, Circle Change, is a nice self-contained power pop package, one which I’m sure will come across with great fuzz and fury live. Along with Delay, we’ve got Space Wolves, who have likely already stolen your heart in the past with their poppy surfy goodness. We’ve got Mapmaker, one of podcast host Mike Moretti’s favorite bands of the year, who will hopefully have some copies of their recent album Critical Path on hand to be exchanged[...]

Tonight: Aesthetic Perfection

Electronic music, in all of its forms, can be a fickle beast. It’s kind of like dating a German chick: sometimes you love her, but she doesn’t always love you back. Music made electronically through drum machines, synthesizers, and samplers always seems to be bubbling at the surface, but never quite boils over. Which, according to Aesthetic Perfection’s lead singer and primary creative force Daniel Graves, is just fine. “The state of electronic music is kind of irrelevant to me. I don’t exist in a scene that will ever be mainstream, so the mainstream’s acceptance of it doesn’t really affect me,” he says, adding “Europeans embrace electronic music more than we do is just a matter of culture. They just exist in a world that likes the sound more, we exist in a world that loves Nickelback.” AP’s latest release, Till Death, is a great departure from their early discography.[...]

Tonight: Iron Chic

Iron Chic is a band with an amusing tongue in cheek modesty, describing themselves as a “decent” band that plays “acceptable” music. They also go by the self deprecating title of, Your Previous Least Favorite Band, giving the impression that they’re not even important enough to be your current least favorite band, with the majority of their albums collecting dust in the 50 cent bin of forgotten thrift stores and the corners of basements across the country. Except of course, that totally isn’t the case. Iron Chic tackles cartwheeling Long Island pop punk that should turn audiences into a motion blur, and their music couldn’t be more alive. They released their new album, The Constant One, back in November, and now their touring trek leads them to Broadway Joe’s. Speaking of new releases and pop punk, two local acts are also slinging out new LP’s tonight. Longstanding Buffalo act Failures’ Union will bring[...]

Tonight: Mid-Winter Beach Party

Buffalo is notorious for its confusing weather, and weather confused citizens.  While visiting Californians may still be shivering in their long underwear tonight, Broadway Joe’s will be soaking in the glorious 46 degree weather with a beach party, complete with punk n’ tots. Mayday! will be performing, and their heavy hitting B-52’s esque track “Blood Bath” could be this event’s party anthem. With such delicious song titles as “Shark Sandwich” and “Illegal Alien vs. Child Predator,” they’re sure to give an electrifying performance, so you best wear a swimsuit made of rubber. The reverb drenched tones of Aaron and the Burrs will propel attendees they ride the waves and surf the crowd. Embrace the ocean of thrashing instrumental surf rock. The Televisionaries out of Rochester will round off the set with dirty, gritty surf punk. Start the weekend tonight with music to break down sandcastles to.  Admission is a cheap[...]
