Tonight: Orations

Tonight, get on down to Mohawk Place to catch an electrifying lineup that is sure to start your weekend off right. 

Buffalo-based shoegaze act Orations will be performing tonight in celebration of the release of their new LP Receiver, which is dripping in subdued, moody, post-punk goodness. The band has generously dropped two new tracks: “All The Honey” and “False Face,” on their Bandcamp to hold you over until tonight. Trust us, you’re not going to want to miss this one. Sharing the stage with them is local fuzzed-out emo heartthrobs Cooler, and the unassuming-yet-thrilling Nylon Otters. There will also be solo performances by Dave Allison and Bill Nehill. Doors open at 8pm with a $7 cover.

Tonight: Greet Death

Flint, MI trio Greet Death is making their way to Buffalo tonight to bring their shoegazy goodness to the legendary Mohawk Place stage. Joining them are Cursive’s 15 Passenger act Campdogzz, who will also be making their Buffalo debut. Local support tonight comes in the form of an intimate and emotional solo set from scene veteran Bill Nehill and punk rock up-and-comers Velvet Bethany. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place at 8pm. Bring at least $7 to adequately support the touring bands.

Tonight: Radiation Risks

If you don’t have someone to be with this Valentine’s or need a last minute date idea, then Mr. Goodbar (upstairs) is the place to be this February 14th. The night will be part punk showcase, part date auction with proceeds going to Planned Parenthood. It’s the perfect way to go about Valentine’s Day. Set to thrash around tonight are lo-fi punks, The Drains, who will also have their new release, “Easy to Love” available. Along with them will be Radiation Risks (who also have a brand new release as of today) and Slow Cooker, with appearance by indie folk crooner, Bill Nehill. After the music you can put in your bid to win a date with a number of people who will be available for a charity date auction. All in all, it should be a fun night. The fun gets started at 7pm with a $5 cover. 21+.

Tonight: Jake Bellissimo

Jake Bellissimo is an indie folk virtuoso of sorts. With an easy voice and angelic string compositions, his creations swarm your mind like a flurry of furry, friendly bees. His latest work, Piece of Ivy, is a collection of acoustic songs of quality recording. This musician is certainly talented and is slated for an up-close setup tonight at Dreamland. Supporting Bellissimo are locals Velvet Bethany and Bill Nehill. Velvet Bethany is a solid acoustic performer shooting you with a touch of 60s and grunge rock. Bill Nehill turns down the lights with his stripped down honest tunes. Fun starts about 8pm and donate $5 or pay what you can in order to support the space/art.

Alright Buffalo, let’s slow it down a bit. This week’s AOTW comes from a fresh collaboration between songwriter Bill Nehill (TMMC, Poison Arrows) and arranger Katie Quider (Space Is Haunted, The Patterns). The new project, titled Plain Brown Envelopes, channels low-tempo dark folk vibes, Nehill’s brooding songwriting conjuring Jeff Mangum in his darker moments and at a significantly lessened BPM. Quider’s backup vocals and arrangements provide a ghostly edge to the gothic-tinged folk project, whose eight-track debut Love In A Plain Brown Envelope offers a deceptively powerful collection of tracks perfect for the last gasp of a long winter. At the core of Plain Brown Envelopes sits the enduring songwriting of Bill Nehill. The craft is juxtaposed nicely with elements of both stoicism and desperation, tonalities spread throughout the album like a hand of fanned-out playing cards. Today is Monday. If you’re one of those people who just can’t seem to say goodbye to that sweet, sweet weekend (acute weekend separation anxiety syndrome, or AWSAS), then take a deep breath. It’s going to be okay. Tonight, underground-ish experimental psyche superstar Matt “MV” Valentine makes a return to the Queen City in support of his sprawling new double LP Midden Mound, an album that will probably make you forget what day of the week it is, anyway. Valentine, one half of folk duo MV & EE, is known for his mind-bending neo-psychedelia; his new album conjures up a good Dark Side of the Moon feel, albeit seared with his signature style of experimentation that will melt your weekday blues away. Bill Nehill Releases From Wilderness to Where? Live EP

Long time Mohawk Place staple and TMMC front man, Bill Nehill, released a live recording earlier this week, capturing he and TMMC keyboardist, Ed Hallborg, opening for Bert Jansch at Town Ballroom in 2010. From Wilderness to Where? is the four track recording of the pair’s set, featuring Nehill’s wonderfully weary and heartbreaking vocals and Hallborg’s understated keys. Nehill has long been one of Buffalo’s musical gems and if you have yet to catch him live solo or with any of his ongoing projects, From Wilderness to Where? is a nice place to start. The full live EP can be listened to at Nehill’s bandcamp page. Bill Nehill should be no stranger to anyone who grew up in the Buffalo independent music scene. For years, he was Mohawk Place’s resident bartender, and, along with Pete, Marty and a slew of others, was one of the faces of our favorite neighborhood haunt. He’s also a fantastic musician and songwriter. Whether performing solo or with Magi Chippie, or anyone else for that matter, Bill speaks truth through his music, evoking the very real sense that he’s been there and lived it. Tonight, Bill would like you to join him for the release of Forward to Ministry Autumn, his new cassette tape. T.M.M.C. Releases Powerful Single, “Too Many Eyes in the Crowd”

Lost in some of the wild performances this past Friday at the Wooden Waves release show was a powerful and understated set from T.M.M.C. Made up of local heavyweights including Bill Nehill and Dave G, the five piece delivered a moving set to the packed Mohawk Place audience. Earlier this fall, the band finally launched a facebook page, one that included the devastating track “Too Many Eyes in the Crowd.” The song, which was actually released three months ago, recalls Automatic for the People era R.E.M. or maybe even early Counting Crows, and features the always captivating Nehill delivering the absolutely humbling chorus “It takes a long time for a man to realize his welcome is worn out.” Damn. Bill & Jamie’s House

The words Bill & Jamie’s House may give you thoughts of stuffy, pompous dinners and cocktail parties, events where you find yourself surrounded by professors and PhD students who manage to speak a lot of words without saying anything. Needless to say, Bill & Jamie’s House never sounds like too much fun, but oh contrary my pessimistic butterfly, the band has more meaning and substance than your graduate school mind can fathom. The new acoustic duo has yet to play a proper show or release any recorded material, and yet they still seem to be creating a buzz for themselves already. Spiral Scratch Records

There’s something pretty special going on at Spiral Scratch Records this Saturday, June 21st. The independent record shop is hosting an afternoon showcase for our inaugural Herd Fest this weeks, so you might want to step outside your normal Allentown routine and check this bill out.  Headlining the afternoon showcase is Bill Nehill and The Poison Arrows along with White Whale, Dream Journal and Fleshy Mounds.  While Nehill and crew have a very early 90s singer-song-writer vibe (feels kind of like Counting Crows or the Wallflowers with some Rust Belt grind) the other three bands are much more high-energy, creating a wonderfully balanced and eclectic experience for concert-goers. Dream Journal is a punk, hard-core band with intelligent lyrics and a velocity to their tunes that makes it nearly impossible to stand still, while Fleshy Mounds kick up the volume and the violence, you can’t really decide if you wanna punch someone, or dance with them listening to their tunes but whatever[...]
