Tonight: New Politics

New Politics are set to play a sold-out show at the Town Ballroom tonight on their 2014 “Everywhere I Go” Tour. The Danish headlining group is full of indie rock rowdiness and pop panache at once, and we’ll be sure to see some goofy (but impressive) breaking by frontman David Boyd. New Politics have proven themselves to be postured enough to be a 107.7 FM favorite but punk enough to get the audience screaming back at them as they’re shaking it. The triple threat lineup includes Bad Suns and Somekindawonderful. Bad Suns incorporates SoCal post-punk echoes in modern rock music. Somekindawonderful formed in an Ohio bar and is now a tight crew of emotionally heavy, brooding rockers. Audience members tonight are pretty much guaranteed to leave the Town Ballroom totally dazed from sweating, yelling, and dancing. It’s going to get loud. The all-ages show goes down at the Town Ballroom[...]

Tonight: Lazlo Hollyfeld

As a solely instrumental rock band, Buffalo’s Lazlo Hollyfeld are able to create vivid, melodic tracks with often a pensive atmosphere. With three full-lengths and two EPs to their name, the latest of which being 2010’s Desert, the band is working on their newest album and have been touring in addition to playing various local shows throughout this year. Guitarist and singer/songwriter Sonny Baker, also of indie-rock outfit Wooden Waves, brings an understated, yet emotive style of playing to Lazlo, using the group as an outlet for his more challenging and experimental inclinations. Tonight the band will appear following an opening set from Rhubarb at McGarret’s on Elmwood Ave. Music starts at 10pm. Tonight: Well Rounded People’s Party [no. 3]

The night before Thanksgiving is sometimes thought of as one of the biggest party nights of the year as people goad themselves for the coming onslaught of awkward family interactions. Well, instead of the usual bar crawl or at least before the usual bar crawl why not take some time for some positive fun that goes toward a good cause at the third annual Well Rounded People’s Party. Even more exciting…you can have this fun on wheels! The Well Rounded People’s Party is an “all ages/all peoples” event and a rare opportunity to get your innovative media, great DJ sets, delicious food provided by West Side Bazaar, and an old-fashioned roller skating fun in one place. With sets by DJ Cutler, UVB76, Greg Howze, and DJ Dana Dancehammer, as well as an interactive live video projection by Chris Svoboda, this is sure to be a great time. So take some[...]

Tonight: Lagwagon

Pop punkers of the world rejoice! Your favorite 90’s band is back! (Sorry NOFX…you were great, but kinda burned us on those last few records). Lagwagon, the seminal California group that counted itself as one of the figureheads of the mid-90’s punk explosion, and, lets be honest, was the tour de force of Fat Wreck Chords, has decided to release a new album after nine loooonnnnngggg years and hit the road. And by hitting the road, I mean hitting it HARD with Fat Wreck Chords other prodigal sons, the slightly more melancholic, street-anchored Swingin’ Utters. (This Legends are on the bill too). A solid dose of fast, melodic punk brought to you by the label we all worshipped as disenfranchised, awkward youth. Town Ballroom ($25) sets the stage for our energy and impassioned chants of “Violins”. Get there by 7pm to catch all the action.

Tonight: Real Friends

Emo/pop-punk band Real Friends (not to be confused with Buffalo’s Real People) will be stopping through Buffalo tonight in support of their new album, Maybe This Place Is the Same and We’re Just Changing. Sad songs, mean songs, these Illinois-based guys do it all. RIYL the records Saves the Day, Brand New, or Taking Back Sunday were putting out a decade ago. Neck Deep, Cruel Hand, Have Mercy, and Cedar Kites will be opening the show tonight. You can still get $15 tickets if you hit up someone from Cedar Kites, otherwise the show is $17 at the door. Doors are at 6:00, 16+.

Tonight: Stars

Over the better part of the last decade, Montreal has hosted something of an indie rock renaissance. While a lot of great bands have come from this city, from Arcade Fire to Tegan and Sara to Wolf Parade, there’s been one scene at the heart of Canada’s musical revival and that’s the Arts & Crafts scene. The label was co-created by Broken Social Scene co-founder Kevin Drew and quickly hosted a bevy of talented Canadian artists who would work together in Broken Social Scene while creating exciting works in their own bands. At the core of this scene was Stars, a band who often traded members with Broken Social Scene while producing memorable albums like Heart, In Our Bedroom After the War, and their 2004, masterpiece, Set Yourself on Fire. The band has been consistently turning out charming albums of their brand of theatrical hyper-literate pop ever since. Tonight, the Montreal 5-piece return to[...]

Tonight: buffaBLOG Rochester Showcase

With #Snowvember loosening its grip on the Buffalo area, we are busting out of the city for the night and zeroing in on the Bug Jar for the blog’s first Rochester showcase. For tonight’s show, we are flipping the script. Normally, we invite a Rochester act into town to with a join the stage with some of Buffalo’s best, but for this evening, we are bringing the 716’s punk funk army and one of the Queen City’s finest, Mallwalkers, along to join a bill of the cream of the crop of Rochester local music. If you missed any of our week long look at tonight’s bill, take a minute to catch up below: The Absolutes Buffalo Sex Change Mallwalkers Harmonica Lewinksi Also, keeping the party going in between sets will be DJ Tight Mike, host of our weekly buffaBLOG Podcast. Expect a nice mix of indie and electro, in addition[...]

Quintron and Miss Pussycat

Hopefully they grabbed a couple parkas before hitting the road because New Orleans based act, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, will be dropping down on the winter wonderland that is Buffalo tonight. Made up of long time electronic musician, Quintron, and puppeteer (yep), Miss Pussycat, the pair have coined the term, “Swamp Tech,” a chaotic version of electronic dance music bred in the deep south for nearly 15 years. They even popped up on an episode of Treme, HBO’s love letter to the Crescent City’s eclectic neighborhood, a couple years back. Originally scheduled for Buffalo Iron Works, this show will now be taking place at the comfier confines of Mohawk Place. Buffalo punk-funk all-stars, Mallwalkers, the Queen City Lotto product, Scajaquada Creeps, are set to open. If you want to see something out there, fun, and original, this is the show for you. Plus, the city barely got hit with snow, so no excuses[...]

Tonight: Attack of the Vinyl Mondays

Essex St. Pub has become my go to winter bar in town. During last year’s Polar Vortex, a small crew and I trekked down Richmond and found comfort in the establishment, donating as many quarters as we had to Essex’s legendary juke box. With the snow falling outside of my window as I type, tonight would be as good of a night as any to get comfy at the Rhode Island dive and hear some choice records as the bar’s Attack of the Vinyl Mondays is back tonight. The crew from Record Theatre will be behind the tables tonight, throwing a bizarro wrench into the normal programing. Except a variety of oddball selections this evening, covering everything from creepshow country to psyched out world music. The records start spinning around 10pm tonight. Entry is, as always, free.

Tonight: WSADA 14

It’s mid November, and right on schedule, the Bills’ season is pretty much over. Thankfully, this should clear up your Sundays to do something a bit more productive, something like attending the latest WSADA series installment at the WASH Project on Massachusetts. WSADA, now at #14, is a reoccurring bill showcasing challenging experimental artists that are very left of the dial from Buffalo and beyond. Tonight’s bill is features acoustic noise trio, Sult, in addition to local multimedia project, Flatsitter (check out the profile Cory Perla of The Public did last week), and abstract video artist Brian Murphy. The show kicks off at tonight at 8pm. $5 cover and its BYOB.

Tonight: Dr. Ooo

Buffalo garage based outfitter, Day After Day Supply, will be celebrating its one year anniversary later at Hardware, and Queen City MC elite, Dr. Ooo, will be on hand to help ring in the festivities. Formerly of Kinda Like Dreamin, the good doctor (AKA Drew Aintworriedboutnuthin Hartman) recently returned home from NYC, bringing his culturally aware references and clever rhythms back to Buffalo with him. Manning the tables tonight will Spooky Stephen, one of half of the busiest DJ party duo in Buffalo, Spooky Business. The party goes down tonight at 10pm. $5 is all it takes to get in.

Tonight: Mooses

Fredonia psych rockers, Mooses, are set to touch down at Mohawk Place later this evening. Born in 2012 and landing on our radar earlier this year, the soaring four piece has one EP to its name, Tales From the Elephant’s Nest, containing the exhilarating song of the year contender, “Bette Davis.” Mooses is the latest act to come out of the college town, which previously birthed acts like Well Worn Boot, Zealot, and Mr. Boneless Rounding out the bill are whacked out country-folk outfit, Pants and the Family, jammy funk trio Luanjie. Music kicks off at 10pm tonight. Cover is $5.

Tonight: JoyCut

It’s not often that a band out of Italy plays Buffalo. It’s even rarer an Italian electronic band plays Broadway Joe’s, a venue usually associated with Punk’n Tots showcases and nu-metal. Tonight, Joycut is set to make their Buffalo debut as  part of the last leg of their tour, which was preceded by a European tour.  Needless to say, 2014 has definitely made use of the duo’s passports. Joycut’s sound is a dash industrial with a splatter of well-produced delicate and hypnotic electronica. This band’s performance is very lively, consisting of two live drummers/multi-percussionists tweaking computers and samples to make a cohesively gripping sound. If you like Sleep Party People, Fuck Buttons, Matthew Dear, or even Bergs Sans Nipple, than you should probably be at this show. I haven’t been able to come across a door time or cover, so let’s just say normal Friday night showtime and normal Friday[...]

Tonight: BoBo, Johnny Revolting, and more

Things are pretty much back to business as usual in the Queen City. It’s getting cold, the amateur street theater on Allen Street is in a recession, and Mohawk Place is once again live and well. Since reopening late this summer, the Mohawk (under new ownership) has been hosting show after show with each line up being stacked full of local home boys and home girls. Tonight is just another night at Mohawk with local acts BoBo, Cowboys of Scotland, and Johnny Revolting taking the stage. Also on the bill are Toronto’s The Nasties. Doors are at 8pm. $5.

Tonight: Dream Journal

Punk rock attack, thick, dirgy riffs, a lot of yelling. These are the trademark sounds of the Hoyt House and they are welcome in my earholes any day of the week. In todays age of processed nonsense sometimes you need a hit to the gut, and this place provides in spades. Hoyt’s played mark to some of 2014’s finest loud hours. Remember Who Killed Spikey Jacket? That show was off the richter. So tonight at 7pm you got Pittsburgh destroyers, Edhochuli, along with a fast-rising staple of our scene, Dream Journal, Cal Dripken and newbz Healer. It’s gonna be heavy and fast but you already knew that. $5 won’t break your bank so go or something.
