Kerfuffle at Canalside (06/17/17)

This past Saturday, Alternative Buffalo continued the tradition of their annual Kerfuffle festival at Canalside. The local radio station started the festival in 2014, which takes place at Canalside during the summer, and Key Bank Center in the winter. Canalside was packed to the brim, as this year’s lineup was probably their strongest yet, featuring acts such as OK Go, Frank Ferdinand, Dashboard Confessional, and more. Check out some photos from the day below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Bob Moses OK Go  Franz Ferdinand Grouplove Dashboard Confessional

The Naked and Famous at the Town Ballroom (06/12/17)

All in attendance at the Naked and Famous show earlier this week we treated to a very special night.  Since their formation, the LA based synth pop has seldom played the Buffalo area, and they brought their A game to the Town Ballroom.  They played a set featuring tracks focusing on their last full length, Simple Forms, as well as a plethora of tracks from their popular 2010 debut album, Passive Me, Aggressive You. Buffalo’s own Humble Braggers kicked off the night with a tight set as well.  Check out some photos from the night below. Humble Braggers The Naked and Famous

Wavves at Tralf Music Hall (05/19/17)

Friday’s Wavves show with Post Animal at The Tralf was one for the books, with drama, tension, and a potential for chaos that became manifest throughout the night. Chicago’s Post Animal got the night going with a super charged set of psychedelic rock that channeled the heft and darkness of Black Sabbath (“You Were Not There”), free form sixties Pink Floyd and the dense harmonics of Tame Impala (“When I Get Home”) to crush the slowly growing crowd under their heavy space riffs. The jury is out on whether Joe Kerry (Steve from Stranger Things) was with them; the one guy kind of looked like him but he was wearing glasses and sporting indie rocker long hair instead of the Steve Harrington bouffant, and his yelps sounded familiar, but in the end it didn’t matter. Post Animal was a heady and head banging good time in the best way possible.[...]

PUP at Studio at Waiting Room (05/18/17)

Well, it was bound to happen eventually. After making their Buffalo debut at the Studio in 2014 and playing there once a year since, they finally sold it out. Following the release of their latest LP, The Dream is Over,  the Toronto pop punk four piece have steadily been gaining popularity, and at that showed at their performance.  Going as down as one of the more insane crowds I’ve seen at the Waiting Room, the packed house didn’t slow down for a minute over the course of the bands hour long set.   The show was opened with an awesome set by Prawn, who played with PUP the last time they were in Buffalo as well.   Check out some photos from the insane night below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Bayside at the Town Ballroom (5/10/17)

Last week, a very sold out Town Ballroom was completely packed for NYC emo/punk act Bayside. It was packed for a good reason though, as Bayside, who are still on tour for their new 2016 LP, titled Vacancy, brought along the timeless Say Anything for the ride, along with Buffalo based legacy act Reggie and the Full Effect. With Reggie and the Full Effect having all four members of local pop punk act Pentimento as a backing band, it only makes sense that they surprise the crowd and played a song as well. All three bands played their classics as well as the deep cuts, and it still felt like the crowd knew every word to all of the songs. Wildhoney at Mohawk Place (05/04/17)

A couple weeks back, Baltimore pop/shoegaze five piece, Wildhoney, returned to Buffalo for yet another fantastic show.  The bands ability to not only create an insane wall of sound, but their ability to keep the music super catchy and interesting were in full effect, coming together to pull off one of the best sets I’ve seen so far this year.  The new tracks that they played sounded incredible live, as did their older releases.  Local emo four piece, Honey., and Albany based pop act, Cannon the Brave, kicked things off, making for a memorable night.  Check out some photos from the show below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. honey Cannon the Brave Wildhoney

Made Violent at Studio at Waiting Room (5/5/17)

Buffalo’s own rock ‘n’ roll rebels Made Violent played a blistering hometown show at the Studio at Waiting Room on May 5th, whipping the crowd into a fierce frenzy. With a seven-inch single soon to be released and a new album fully recorded, Made Violent are making moves, expanding their international reach to an even wider audience hungry for pure, uncut rock. Joining the fray that evening were Rustbelt roots-rockers Sixties Future, preparing a full length of their own, and indie punks Ugly Sun, who recently finished an EP. Check out the photos below! Screaming Females at Mohawk Place (4/30/17)

Screaming Females returned to Buffalo after a lengthy absence to play a packed house at Mohawk Place on Sunday, April 30th, in support of their latest album, 2015’s Rose Mountain. The New Brunswick, New Jersey trio played an eardrum-obliterating set of serrated rock defined by its sheer intensity and lockstep precision. Marissa Paternoster’s full-throated voice and blaring guitar found the perfect foil in Michael Abate and Jarrett Dougherty’s robust rhythmic thunder. Opening that night were Buffalo’s own funk-punk freaks, Mallwalkers, whose horn-driven, new wave madness (literally) turned up the heat. Mallwalkers Screaming Females

of Montreal at Asbury Hall (4/26/17)

The semiannual of Montreal art rock freakout rolled through Asbury Hall at Babeville Wednesday night with Christina Scheider’s Jepeto Solutions, and the results were customarily intense and deeply satisfying. Jepeto Solutions were instantly effective, with a continental psychedelic sound that recalled the soundtracks to Michelangelo Antonioni and Barbet Schroder films. Christina Schneider’s dreamy vocals kept everything in a hazy focus while she and her band bathed the crowd in shimmering guitars and kept us guessing through whimsical, swinging timing changes that conjured pleasing sensations of detached freedom and innocence, ideal sensations before a set from of Montreal. of Montreal devotees know that their shows are happenings in the truest sense, and the current show came at the audience hard with a teasing set that largely explored the band’s last three albums and visions of masculinity in 2017. Frontman/guru Kevin Barnes dazzled the crowd with a cross dressing series of tasteful[...]

Japanese Breakfast at Mohawk Place (4/23/17)

Japanese Breakfast’s dreamy indie-pop was met with rapturous acclaim at Mohawk Place on Sunday, April 23rd, at the band’s first live appearance in Buffalo. Equal parts shimmering and sinister, Michelle Zauner’s emotive songs express both harrowing loss and radiant joy over a bed of gossamer guitars and transcendent pop hooks. Supporting Japanese Breakfast that night was Rebecca Ryskalczyk, a singer-songwriter specializing in spartan guitar confessionals, and local act The Leones, a ghostly psych-rock quartet with a penchant for darkness. Check out the photos below. Acid Dad at Studio at Waiting Room (4/2/17)

On April 2nd, New York City’s Acid Dad brought the seductive swagger of their gritty garage rock sound to the Studio at Waiting Room for a night of debauchery. Along for the ride were Brooklyn’s Honduras, who kept the spirit of ’77 alive with their unbridled take on downtown punk, earning their stripes from rock ’n’ roll’s true believers. Representing Buffalo’s local scene that evening,  Deadwolf’s psychedelic stomp and Ugly Sun’s bare-knuckle riffs set the stage for the main event. Check out the photos below. Minus the Bear at the Town Ballroom (03/30/17)

This past Thursday, legendary indie/math rock group Minus the Bear played an awesome show at the Town Ballroom.  They played a career spanning set, touching on most of the past albums, as well as playing multiple cuts from the solid new release, VOIDS.   Bayonne and Beach Slang were featured as openers on the tour.  While all bands differed sonically, the eclectic lineup came together for a super memorable show.  Check out some photos from the awesome night below. Local Natives at the Town Ballroom (03/17/17)

This past Friday, Local Natives brought their lofty indie sounds to the Town Ballroom.  This was the second date on the tour for their new album, Sunlight, but the Californian five piece worked like a well oiled machine, sounding completely ethereal. The near perfect, lofty, vocal harmonies sounded incredible throughout the venue, and emotions ran high throughout the crowd. The band played a spanning set list featuring tracks from all three of their studio albums, making for memorable night. Check out some photos below, and click here for a full gallery. Del Paxton Album Release Show at Mohawk Place (03/03/17)

Last Friday,  Buffalo emo / math rock trio, Del Paxton, celebrated the release of their fantastic new LP at Mohawk Place.  They managed to pull together some great local acts including VWLS, Yellow House, Sonny Baker Band, and Slow Cooker, resulting in what will probably one of be one of our favorite shows of the year.  You can check out our review of All Day, Every Day, All Night here, and check out some photos from the night below. Lemuria at Mohawk Place (02/10/17)

We sent buffaBLOG photographer Brendan O’Connor to last Friday’s Lemuria show at Mohawk Place with Mikey Erg and Cayetana. The Buffalo natives, Lemuria, packed the room for the sold-out show, arguably one of the most full the room has been since the re-opening of the venue. Check out the photos from the very special return show below. Mikey Erg Cayetana Lemuria Photos by Brendan O’Connor
