Tonight: See Through Dresses

Omaha’s See Through Dresses is garnering quite a name for themselves between their growing presence on the blogosphere and ability to pack basement shows to the support beams. If their name sounds familiar, you might have caught them on their pivotal opening spot for the sold-out Cursive show last March Signed to Tiny Engines, the quartet is on a nationwide tour in support of the band’s latest album, End of Days. See Through Dresses is a mix between dreamy indie rock and vulnerable shoegaze (a la Bob Mould), depending on if Mathew Carroll or Sara Bertuldo is singing. The group will be making a stop in Buffalo tonight at Mohawk Place with a pretty light bill (considering For The Music Productions is promoting it) featuring Orations, Area Niftyone, Jennifer Karlis, and Improbable Cause. Put $8 in your pocket before you leave the house. Music begins at 8pm.

Just Announced: Andrew W.K.

If you are looking to party this holiday season, then look no further to…Broadway Joe’s? Yes, everyone’s favorite University Heights haunt will be hosting cult leader / party legend, Andrew W.K. In a freshly  announced event this afternoon, the rock and roller announced he will be making a solo stop in Western New York on Tuesday, December 7th. If you’ve seen Andrew W.K. in the past as a full-band, his solo shows are still a party, just with only one person on the stage. This will be W.K.’s  the 8th annual Christmas show and since he is immortal, maybe it will be the first of many. Tickets are available at Ticket Fly for $25 and you should probably get them soon. We predict a sellout.

Tonight: Damian

Mondays are usually fairly sleepy in Buffalo, so many local singer-songwriters head on down to Nietzsche’s in order to try new material, collaborate with other musicians, or grab a fairly-priced PBR. However, this week at Nietzsche’s is a little different from the rest. This week is the debut and farewell performance of mumbly introspective local songwriter, Damian. We’ve covered a lot of Damian’s solo work and various group efforts over the past five plus years. His album, You Don’t Need It, has over 100 plays on our office computer, and we even dubbed his song “I My Own,” as the best song out of Buffalo in 2014. I guess tonight will be Damian’s Buffalo-residency swan song. It’s no doubt that he will be back, playing intimate semi-frazzled and endearing performances, it will just take a bit. Come to Nietzsche’s starting at 8pm to catch one of Buffalo’s best songwriters. Free dollars.

Tonight: Windhand

It’s gonna get heavy tonight at the Studio at the Waiting Room with Richmond-based psychedelic-metal act, Windhand, taking the stage. The band is on tour in support of their latest album, Grief’s Infernal Flower, produced by Jack Endino (Nirvana, High on Fire), which just came out on Relapse Records. Fans of Electric Wizard or Sleep would dig this rising sludge act. Also on the bill are Portland prog-metal act Danava and Swedish doom band Monolord, Doors are at 7pm with a $17 cover. Tonight: Orenthal

Local punk act, Orenthal, is having a release party tonight at Mohawk Place, for their debut album, Rising. Aggressive punk rock prime for rushing the front and enthusiastically shouting along with the lyrics with finger-pointing exclamations. The band cleverly mixes hardcore punk influences with ska breakdowns, making the songs both fun and unpredictable. Fans of the Offspring’s Smash, NOFX, or Bad Religion should be psyched on it. Also on the bill is On The Cinder, BastardBastardBastard, as well as The Wagon by way of Akron, OH. Show starts early, like get there at 7pm seriously early. $5 cover. Pack some extra bills to pick up the Orenthal album.

Tonight: Tragedy (All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees & Beyond)

New York City glam-metal tribute band, Tragedy, will be making a stop at the Studio at Waiting Room tonight on their tour.  Equal parts 80’s Metallica, Poison, and Dethklok, the band’s hilarious takes and exploits make Tragedy one of the most entertaining  tribute bands on the market. Tragedy has expanded their initial Bee Gees centered setlist to put a metal hairband spin on pop classics of yesteryear. Not to be overlooked is Metalachi, a mariachi band that hails Satan and snorts horse tranquilizers. Doors open at 7pm with a $15 cover.

Jack Topht and TEENWOLF Release Timely Collab

#FeeltheBern fever has apparently hit Allentown’s most prolific wordsmith, Jack Topht. In honor of tonight’s Democratic debate, rap collaborators Topht and DJ TEENWOLF have teamed up yet again after working on various projects together over the past few years. This time around, the two have joined forces to drop the well timed track “bernie sanders terry p shit.” Much like in the past, Topht gains great inspiration from the political landscape (see “Free Gay Abortions,” “Liberal Elite,” “Go Back to Russia”), and continues to make witty observations in his signature comical style, while maintaining his status of most-amount-of-Buffalo-culture-dropper per track with references to Cafe Taza, Tim Horton’s, and First Niagara. No word on whether Sanders will enter the debate podium to the Topht/TEENWOLF jam, so just in case, listen below.

Cooler Releases Debut Track “Cringe”

Although Cooler is an infant in band years , the group is already well on it’s way to explode beyond Buffalo’s music walls. Composed of a blend of solo artist Aileen Yates, two members of Brother Keep (Nathan McDorman and Nick Sessanna), and rounded out by former Lancer drummer-turned-bassist Adam Cwynar, the band has hit the ground running, already landing a deal with emo upstart label, NDE Records. With an EP titled 1993 coming out September 22nd and another batch of studio sessions already completed, 2016 is set to be a breakout year for the fledgling four piece. This past week, Cooler’s grungy debut track “Cringe” hit the internet on esteemed scene blog CouchKing. Unsurprisingly, the song is all about looking back at all those things you regret doing in the past. Those moments that haunt you in the final minutes before falling asleep or the “on-repeat” moments you have when driving all alone. Fans of[...]

buffaBLOG is pleased to announce the creation of a new series aimed to bringing back emo music for ONE NIGHT ONLY (every couple of months) aptly titled Taking Back Saturday. Whether you were in on the “mics are for singing not swinging” feud, or if you were contemplating the perfect song to type into your listening to section of LiveJournal, Saturday, September 19th is the night for you. Expect hits from Taking Back Sunday, Saves the Day, Drive-Thru selects, and deep cuts from the likes of American Football. It will all be there. The inaugural event will have DJ sets from Cute is What We Aim For’s Jeff Czum, Mandy K’s Anthony Musior, and In Motion’s Nick Sessanna. Fun starts at 10pm with a $5 cover. Wood Bois Release New EP Sex Playlist

With the break-up of Buffalo’s beloved goofrock band/art project, Well Worn Boot, the local scene has been void of a talented group of talented musicians that can simultaneously deliver good music and “wait… what did they just say?” Enter Wood Bois, a three-piece electro-goth project featuring Blaine Wood (vocals/keyboards), Julius Bois (vocals/samples) and Hiding in the Dark Hiding in the Shadows (keyboards). I am assuming that’s not his birth name. Anyway, the trio released a new EP this past week, titled Sex Playlist. riding  As far as the subject matter,  it’s all over the gambit. The EP starts off with “Razor Scooterz.” The track is led by a gothy-synth and soon evolves into a song about how much a job sucks and how you can’t wait to just get out of work and ride a Razor Scooter. The second track of the album, “The Sparkles,” could easily be a Cure/The[...]

Sixties Future Releases HAIM Cover

It’s no secret that Sixties Future has been one of our favorite bands to pop up in 2015. With just one show under its belt, the quintet has brought a whole new sound to the oftentimes repetitive Buffalo’s music scene. After an impressive debut show as part of Humble Braggers release party, Sixties Future showed a very engaged crowd what was up their sleeve, which included an impressive cover of HAIM’s “The Wire.” This week, the band debuted the cover recorded last month with Jay Zubricky at GCR Audio. Highlighting Chris Couche’s gravelly vocals, Sixties Future delivers a version of “The Wire” which is on par with the original while adding some of the band’s unique flair to the track. Sixties Future will be playing on August 7th at Nietzsche’s with Attic Abasement, M.A.G.S., and Newish Star. Check out the HAIM cover below.

Passion in Constellation Releases Summer Anthem in “Tropical Love”

Alright, I am going to make a bold prediction. Passion in Constellation will be in the top ten for our annual end of the year top twenty countdown for songs coming out of Buffalo in 2015. For buffaBLOG top twenty historians, Passion in Constellation made a blip on our countdown last year at number sixteen with his collaboration with relatively undiscovered singer Cara Doyle. The pair reunited to strike gold once again, releasing the dance track “Tropical Love” this past weekend and it’s been on a 24-hour loop at the blog headquarters. Passion in Constellation is the production moniker for Buffalo-based electro-pop producer Chris Alan. Throughout the past two years under the Passion in Constellation name, Alan has progressively improved (but he started out awesome with the single “Sunlight,” so there was a bit of a lead start), proving the producer has a real ear for what translates. With Passion in[...]

Just Announced: Modest Mouse

One thing that has been happening more and more is that we are getting concert announcements for bands that are totally out of left field. We usually know ahead of time the majority of bands that are going to come through before they are publicly announced based on our network of Buffalo music industry insiders, but not today’s announcement. After a fairly quiet summer at the outer harbor, it was announced at 5pm on the dot that on Saturday, September 12th, 103.3 the Edge would be hosting an evening co-headlined by Modest Mouse and Rise Against, with support by Coheed and Cambria, Highly Suspect, Boots, Made Violent and MORE. Isaac Brock must have had some great wings when he came last spring. Tickets go on sale this Friday, July 10th, at noon via TicketMaster for $31.03 (only as an early bird special). Yeehaw.

slowshine – “Solid State”

I think it’s no secret at this point that I split my time between Albany and Buffalo. The drive sucks, but it definitely keeps my life interesting leading two completely different lives. One of the things I’ve liked about Albany life is being able to discover all the local bands/scene. Although there is are like two legit venues for indie bands to play in (with an additional two DIY venues that I know of), the quality coming out of the region is pretty remarkable with what seems to be little support. This brings me to the band slowshine, an Albany-based three piece that I first discovered when researching the 17 Best Bands to check out at Move Festival.  Consisting of the songwriting partnership between Noah Bondy and Cameron Castan, and a rotating drummer, the duo seems to be on the bill for every great indie show coming to the capital region. In[...]

Embers Release New Recordings

Last winter, Rochester’s Embers submitted a demo to our inbox that left an impression strong enough for me to listen to over and over again on a flight to Chicago. Embers had some bangers, but seemed to have a lot of different directions it was heading, still developing its sound. Yesterday, the band released a new set of improved live-studio recordings that were quite impressive after jumping back into the studio in late April to rerecord two songs previously released on the Singles demo, “Stop Motion” and “Embrace.” Produced and recorded by University at Rochester student project titled Penguin Records, the recording quality has dramatically improved, highlighting the bands noteworthy 90’s indiemo sound. Check out “Stop Motion” below.
