Tonight: Joywave

Tonight Joywave blows the roof off Buffalo’s historic Town Ballroom for the final date of their ‘Thanks. Thanks for Coming’ tour. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Joywave are Rochester indie rockers fronted by multi-hyphenate Daniel Armbruster. Their latest album, Content, was released last year and gathered millions of listens with singles “It’s a Trip!” and “Doubt.” Be prepared to move and potentially lose your voice. Joining the party is LA-based singer-songwriter Sasha Sloan. You might recognize her porcelain voice from collaborations with Kygo, ODESZA and Kaskade, but now she’s singing her own awesome and moody pop songs. Also performing are Rochester-based rocktronica four-piece, KOPPS, and synth poppers, Humble Braggers. Doors at 7pm. $17 for advance tickets, $20 at the door. 16 and up with ID, under 16 with an adult.  Get your tickets here.

Tonight: Lights

In the early 2010’s, Lights was no stranger to Buffalo, playing venues such as Mohawk Place, Soundlab, Club Infinity, and an opening slot a free Canalside show. As time has went on, her electropop sound became more refined and mature, and her die hard fan base stuck with her.  Along with some cuts from her older releases, you should expect to hear a bunch of tracks off of her last release, Skin & Earth, released last year. This will be her first time upgrading to the Ballroom, and with support from DBG and Chase Atlantic, it’s sure to be a memorable night. Doors open for the show tonight at 7pm.  Tickets are available at the door for $22, with $1 from every ticket sale going towards PLUS1, an organization working towards bringing accessible renewable energy technology to undeveloped communities.

Tonight: This Day & Age

In the early to mid 2000s, Tonawanda act This Day & Age were hometown heroes. After inking a record deal with One Eleven records, they released two beloved albums, 2004’s Always Leave The Ground and 2006’s The Bell and the Hammer. Between that time, TD&A evolved from a light-hearted, emo-pop band to a nuanced and jazzy quintet, lush with electric piano and complex arrangements. After a 10+ year absence, they are finally reuniting tonight at the Town Ballroom for a long-overdue revisit to those two albums. Opening up the show are fellow 2006-ers Common Kings, as well as americana-rockers The Eaves and indie-rock mainstay MAGS. Tickets are $20 presale and $25 at the door. Doors are at 6pm, music starts at 7pm.

Turnover at the Town Ballroom (11/13/17)

Last week, Turnover made their triumphant return to Buffalo in support of their new album, Good Nature.  The band managed a surprisingly great turnout at the Town Ballroom after the closure of the Waiting Room, causing the show to move locations.  They cruised through a handful of tracks off of their past two records, and with the help of Pronoun and Elvis Depressedly, made for a killer show overall.  Check out some photos from the night below, shot be blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Slowdive at the Town Ballroom (11/9/17)

Buffalo was treated to incredible performance by the legendary dream pop/shoegaze act Slowdive this past Thursday. In their first appearance in Buffalo since their reunion in 2014, the band did not disappoint, playing tracks spanning their whole discography, including tracks from their fantastic new self titled record, which was released earlier this year. The rare appearance was well worth the wait, the band glided through incredible live renditions of their tracks, closing with a perfect encore of “Don’t Know Why,” “Dagger,” and “40 Days.” With a killer opening set from Cherry Glazerr, the two band show was one of the most memorable ones hosted at the venue so far this year.  Check out some photos from the night below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Tonight: White Reaper

Ascendant Louisville hard rockers White Reaper headline a killer lineup tonight at the Town Ballroom with Chicago psych rock outfit Post Animal and local garage rock heroes Made Violent. In town in support of their very, very well reviewed sophomore effort The World’s Best American Band, White Reaper will be unleashing their bold, fully loaded and totally kick ass 70’s/80’s rock stylings (minus the problematic baggage) on the willing and eager faithful, while Post Animal returns to play Buffalo twice in one year having melting faces with their Sabbath meets Tame Impala jams at the Tralf in May when they opened for that ill fated and abridged Wavves show. Hometown garage rock troublemakers Made Violent, who are currently prepping for the release of new music next year and getting ready for a tour of the midwest with Ugly Sun, open the show, returning to the Town Ballroom stage that started it all,[...]

Just Announced: The National

Just when you thought Buffalo’s strong year of shows couldn’t get any better, the Town Ballroom announced that Cincinnati by way of Brooklyn indie heroes The National will be hitting it up December 11. On tour in support of their latest album Sleep Well Beast, they’ll will be in town to play a benefit show for Buffalo String Works, a rapidly growing organization on the West Side dedicated to providing music instruction to low income, refugee and immigrant kids K through 8th grade. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon and will be $60 a pop, with a two ticket limit.

Against Me! at the Town Ballroom (10/05/17)

Last week, scene vets Against Me! returned to Buffalo for another unforgettable show. This was the their second time in Buffalo since the release of their latest LP, Shape Shift With Me, and they dropped a new 7″ earlier this year, featuring two killer new tracks, “Sabbitha Christie” and “First High Of The Morning.” The Dirty Nil and Bleached kicked the night off, setting up the perfect high enegery atmosphere to get the crowd ready for Against Me. Their setlist was nuts, 27 songs spanning their entire catalog, which included two covers, “Running Down a Dream” by Tom Petty and “The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton” by The Mountain Goats. They ended the night right with a jam packed five song encore, the perfect end to a stellar gig. Check out some photos from the show below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Tonight: The Get Up Kids

Legendary Kansas act The Get Up Kids are rolling through Buffalo tonight… So lace up your ratty old converse and dust off that threadbare band t-shirt, this is probably the coolest thing you could go do on a Tuesday. Often cited as (some of) the godfathers of the emo genre, the band is sure to perform an incredible set full of fan favorites and deep cuts from their impressive 20+ year career. They also have fellow emo-veteran Evan Weiss in tow in his buzzing emo-pop band Pet Symmetry. For those that haven’t heard, this show has been moved from the Waiting Room to Town Ballroom – tickets purchased for Waiting Room are valid and will be honored at the show. Doors are at 7pm. Tickets are $20 advance, $25 at the doors.  This show is 16+ with ID, under 16 will be let in with an adult.

Tegan and Sara at the Town Ballroom (07/29/17)

This past Saturday, indie pop legends, Tegan and Sara, took to the stage at the Town Ballroom to perform a career spanning set. While their setlist focused mainly on songs of of their 2013 LP, Heartthrob,  they also dug into their vast back catalog, performing fan favorites such as “Back In Your Head” and “Walking With a Ghost.” With an incredible opening set from Japanese Breakfast, there wasn’t a dull moment all night.  Check out some photos from the show below. Tonight: Phantogram

Blazing supernova hot NYC electronic pop duo Phantogram makes their local debut tonight at the Town Ballroom with enigmatic electro chanteuse Skott. Phantogram, aka the duo of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, have been cranking cinematic, nocturnal soundtracks across three full length albums as well as guesting on various Flaming Lips projects,  their ongoing collaboration with Big Boi under the moniker Big Grams, and a show is really one of the more anticipated shows of our above average summer concert season. Opening the show will be the frankly mysterious Skott; she’s signed to RCA/Victor and her synth pop sound is bewitching, but beyond that she’s keeping a tight lid on the details, which is also nice, and refreshing. Tickets are still available for $27 and doors open at 7pm.

Tonight: Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara are undeniably one of the most important modern indie pop bands. Their influence spans multiple genres and have effected innumerable bands, and you’ve got a chance to see them live tonight at the Town Ballroom.  While they are technically still on tour in support of their latest album, Love You To Death, the duo is gearing up for a string of shows celebrating the ten year anniversary of the legendary record, The Con, so I’m sure you’ll be hearing multiple tracks off of that record, as well as many tracks spanning their entire catalog. Opening the show will be the incredible Japanese Breakfast, and if you caught their recent show at Mohawk Place, you know their set is not to be missed. Their new LP, Soft Sounds From Another Planet, just came out on Dead Oceans, and it is killer from front to back. Doors open at the[...]

The Naked and Famous at the Town Ballroom (06/12/17)

All in attendance at the Naked and Famous show earlier this week we treated to a very special night.  Since their formation, the LA based synth pop has seldom played the Buffalo area, and they brought their A game to the Town Ballroom.  They played a set featuring tracks focusing on their last full length, Simple Forms, as well as a plethora of tracks from their popular 2010 debut album, Passive Me, Aggressive You. Buffalo’s own Humble Braggers kicked off the night with a tight set as well.  Check out some photos from the night below. Humble Braggers The Naked and Famous

Tonight: The Naked And Famous

All you synth pop lovers out there need to get down to the Town Ballroom tonight. New Zealand turned Los Angeles based act, The Naked and Famous, are finally making a stop in Buffalo. From what I can see, it looks like the band has never actually made it out to Buffalo since they formed in 2008. Since their formation, The Naked and Famous have been pumping out hits almost every year. Even if you don’t actively listen to the band, you have to have heard a lot of their songs in passing over the years. While they are sure to be prepping up a new release sometime soon, they are still on tour supporting their 2016 LP, Simpler Forms. Opening up the show will be Buffalo’s own Humble Braggers, who recently released their debut LP, I Know Better, I’m No Better. Doors are set to open at 7pm, and tickets are still[...]

Bayside at the Town Ballroom (5/10/17)

Last week, a very sold out Town Ballroom was completely packed for NYC emo/punk act Bayside. It was packed for a good reason though, as Bayside, who are still on tour for their new 2016 LP, titled Vacancy, brought along the timeless Say Anything for the ride, along with Buffalo based legacy act Reggie and the Full Effect. With Reggie and the Full Effect having all four members of local pop punk act Pentimento as a backing band, it only makes sense that they surprise the crowd and played a song as well. All three bands played their classics as well as the deep cuts, and it still felt like the crowd knew every word to all of the songs. Check out some photos from the amazing show below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Reggie and the Full Effect Pentimento Say Anything Bayside
