Tonight; Music Is Noise

Buffalo noise outfit Noumenoise is curating a heavy duty two night noise fest celebrating and exploring “ordered and chaotic sound.” Tonight’s first night at Milkie’s on Elmwood is focused on “heavy earth sounds” and will be featuring Ithaca’s HEARSE, Cosmic Heart Crisis from Syracuse, Rochester’s Fentanyl Tapwater, plus local noise artists Anthopic, Jesse and the Spirit, Menophilia, and Party Shirt. Tomorrow night at Nietzsche’s will be all about “heavenly space sounds” from Cleveland’s Item, Denzelworldpeace, Dogs In Stereo, Family ph0t0 b00k, $Bitch.00, Karsten Brooks, TEA SOUP, and Destroying. Cover is $5 per show or $7 for a two night wristband, and doors are at 8pm. Being a celebration of the local and regional noise scenes, it has been requested that there will be “no discrimination, no creeps, no egos,” so please, don’t be a dickhead. The Light Has Gone [demo 2019] by Hearse

Tonight: Dentist

Kick your weekend into high gear tonight with an irresistible indie rock show at Milkie’s on Elmwood. Headlining and from the larger-than-life city of Asbury Park, NJ is garage rock act, Dentist. This kinetic trio applies breezy surf influences over raw pop-rock riffs like suntan lotion, creating catchy, sweet and sour records that will get your head bopping. These three have been turning a lot of heads with their 2018 album, Night Swimming, so now is the perfect time to catch their wave live. Sharing the spotlight are hometown heroes and indie rockers, Cooler. This talented trio craft exciting and melodic rock records that strike an emotional nerve like lightning through your veins. This is going to be a set you’ll get swept up in, so show up and surrender yourself. Rounding out this awesome lineup are Buffalo synth-poppers, Small Smalls. Show at 8pm with a $5 cover. Tonight: Sugar City’s 10th Anniversary Party with Calvin Johnson

Sugar City, the city’s only remaining DIY arts and performance space is celebrating ten years of existence in both the material and immaterial worlds tonight with two parties, an excellent lineup featuring friend of Sugar City, indie rock hero Calvin Johnson, and you beautiful people. It’s been quite the adventure for Sugar City since it’s grassroots founding back in 2008, existing first in the hearts and minds of it’s early organizers and supporters, then in a magical physical space on Wadsworth at the base  of Allentown, where magical things happened… before being gentrified out and/or beset upon by unfriendly forces, depending on who you’re talking to. Then it was back to the whole hearts and minds thing as Sugar City regrouped, staging events around the city and keeping the flame alive until an unsolicited grant from Robert Rauschenberg’s foundation put enough wind in their sails to land another wonderful space on[...]

Featuring vinyl jams spun (really spun!) by Handsome Dan, DJ Haüsfly, DJ Reazon, and Steve Soulson… the sweet soul, hot funk, and Soul Train line dancing joints will be kicking from 10pm to 3am, giving you plenty of time to drop in, throw your $5 towards this fine arts collective (full disclosure: I volunteer over there) to keep them going, and shake your booty right for as long as you like (or, until 3am when frankly, you got to go), and hit up the Lloyd’s truck across the street. Soul Night really is all you need.

Tonight: dreambeaches

Beloved Buffalo baroque indie surf pop band dreambeaches are back with their eagerly awaited second EP Disappearing Act, and they are rightly celebrating it’s glorious overabundance of riches with the people tonight at Milkie’s on Elmwood. Fearing Friday the 13th is for suckers, and if you’re going out you might as well go out strong kicking it with dreambeaches and a tight lineup including visionary MC extraordinaire Hop Hop, psychedelic rockers Bold Folly, and garage rocker Jack (aka Brittany Costa). Tickets are $10, which includes a hard copy of the EP if you’re into that sort of thing, and doors open at 8pm. Disappearing Act by dreambeaches

Tonight: Bearhunter

Tonight Milkie’s on Elmwood hosts an intense night of indie rock featuring the newly rejuvenated Bearhunter, along with Rochester’s The Young Couples and local art rock darlings Parade Chic. After resurfacing for Herd Fest 2017 this summer, the funky and melodic trio have been hard at work on their first release in four years, so be ready to maybe hear some new tunes, while The Young Couples will be bringing their hella catchy Vampire Weekend infused garage rock to town.  Doors are at 9pm and cover is $5.

Tonight: Dance Yrself Clean

Tonight the latest edition of the Dance Yrself Clean Hipster Dance Party series is back at Milkie’s, and like the very satisfying January hootenanny the proceeds are going to a worthy cause doing the right thing. Journey’s End Refugee Services, a Buffalo non-profit helping our newest Buffalonians get settled and become members of our community, which is a win-win for everybody involved, but with El Trumpito targeting refugees and immigrants from the Oval Office, they can use the help during this particularly fraught time, which is where the DYC crew and you do your parts. Starting at 9 PM the DYC crew (Ben Parsons, Nick Muldoon, Tom Burtless, Allison Lavis, Katie Gariepy) will be rocking the tightest indie dance jams from the 2000’s up through yesterday; you, dear reader just got to show up, pay $5, and dance.

Tonight: Dance Yrself Clean Presents World War III

Tonight, Buffalo’s newest ongoing dance party series returns with a special event  at Milkie’s commemorating our new American now: World War III. There is absolutely no better way to celebrate the 45th President of the United States than a fun, apocalypse themed dance party with all your friends, some stellar DJs, and the proceeds going to the ACLU, who’s going to need the funds more than ever. Sure America is going to a dark, dark place and looking inwards, but Dance Yrself Clean’s DJs are going international, celebrating danceable hipster jams from all over the world. Tom Burtless (Humble Braggers, Honey COMA, Girl Jeans) will be covering Australia, Ben Parsons (Goth Prince of Spookyville) has Canada, Nick Muldoon (local cool dude; noted anglophile) will be repping the UK, Bryan Johnson (Bryan Johnson & The Family, Mutual Friends, Honey COMA) will be kicking out Japan’s finest jams while Allison Lavis (lead[...]

Tonight: Harmonica Lewinski

Rochester retro rockers Harmonica Lewinski make a trip west on the 90 to stir up some trouble and some lewd and lascivious thoughts at Milkie’s on Elmwood. True Rochester and local favorites, you know you’re in for rowdiness at a HL show, especially with local ne’er-do-wells Deadwolf and the newly rechristened Johnny & The Man Kids (aka Pepperoni Boys, aka Spaghetti Boys) opening the show. Come hear songs from Harmonica Lewinksi’s full length debut Head Honcho and cope with… things through some dangerous and properly delinquent rock and roll. It will make you feel good. Or less bad. Cover is $5 and doors open at 9pm. Head Honcho by Harmonica Lewinski

Tonight: Soul Night

Word on the street is that there is a storm brewing this weekend. Meteorologists are yet unsure if it will be a real SOUL storm, but if you come down to Milkie’s tonight, you are sure to feel the thunder in your soles. By now, Soul Night is a Buffalo institution, a seasonal night of some of the best pop music ever recorded and one of the city’s sweatiest dance floors all organized to benefit the tireless work of Sugar City. This is fever pitch level stuff folks. Have you ever seen what this music does to people? Have you ever, say, listened to Sam Cooke by yourself? You know its power, you know what it can do. Now imagine it louder, in a bar full of some the city’s hippest kids. Yes, you see why you cannot miss this event right? The rain forecast tomorrow was ordained by the[...]
