Tonight: The Gooch Palms

After putting on a head turning performance at this spring’s SXSW, the bare bones punk duo of the Gooch Palms will pay Mohawk Place a visit tonight. The self proclaimed “shit-pop” pairing from via Los Angeles via Newcastle, Australia recalls the Ramones, Stooges, and Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Gooch Palms singer/guitarist Leroy Macqueen seems to take a clothing optional approach when performing live, frequently letting his manhood swing freely while on stage. Just an FYI. Cover for tonight’s show is $10 at the door. Music begins around 8pm with support from fellow LA act, Death Valley Girls.

Just Announced: Ceremony

The show announcements have been coming in at a blistering pace lately so we wanted to catch up a couple that slipped through the cracks, bringing us to to Ceremony. The powerviolence act turned Matador signee will fill another hole in massively busy summer shaping up down at Mohawk Place. The California based five-piece just released its fantastic, post-punk break up album, The L-Shaped Man, yesterday, and will take the album on tour this summer with a stop scheduled for the downtown venue on Sunday, July 5th. Joining Ceremony will be fuzzy shoegazers Pity Sex. Tickets are currently available to purchase for $12

Teenage Satan Releases Latest Song “She Was My Ocean”

Experimental bedroom project, Teenage Satan (now performing under the name Kimmy), sneakily dropped a new song a couple days before the fully fleshed band open from Krill last night at the Glitterbox. Fronted by local writer, Dan Bauer, the now four-piece’s latest tune, “She Was My Ocean,” sounds like Bob Dylan fronting mewithoutyou. With a newly expanded band, and new name, keep an eye out for future releases from Teenage Satan/Kimmy at the band’s bandcamp page. Listen to “She Was My Ocean” below.

Tonight: Max Garcia Conover

After ending his Bon Iver-like exhile and hitting the road for a few weeks with fellow Maine folkies, the Ghost of Paul Revere, the Portland based Max Garcia Conover will bring his tour to WNY tonight with a weekend ending set at the Sportsmen’s Tavern in Black Rock. Tonight will be a homecoming gig of sorts for the Jamestown born musician, and despite spending the last month on the road, Conover has still been keeping up with this (near) weekly release of new songs/videos as part of his unique crowd funding project through Patreon. Further info can be found here. Conover and the Ghost of Paul Revere, will hit the stage at the Sportsmen’s later on this evening, beginning at 8:30pm. Cover is $10 at the door.

Bill Nehill Releases From Wilderness to Where? Live EP

Long time Mohawk Place staple and TMMC front man, Bill Nehill, released a live recording earlier this week, capturing he and TMMC keyboardist, Ed Hallborg, opening for Bert Jansch at Town Ballroom in 2010. From Wilderness to Where? is the four track recording of the pair’s set, featuring Nehill’s wonderfully weary and heartbreaking vocals and Hallborg’s understated keys. Nehill has long been one of Buffalo’s musical gems and if you have yet to catch him live solo or with any of his ongoing projects, From Wilderness to Where? is a nice place to start. The full live EP can be listened to at Nehill’s bandcamp page. In the mean time, listen to the set opener, “Don’t Worry Darling,” below.

Just Announced: Mikal Cronin

I feel like the only posts I write for this blog lately are show announcements, but that would mean Buffalo is getting a lot of good shows, consistently, which is the whole point of this thing, so why am I complaining? Anyways, the latest to add to this endless news cycle is Mikal Cronin at Mohawk Place. The former Ty Segall bandmate has been quietly releasing stellar power pop albums over the last few years, with his latest record, MKIII, dropping last week on May 5th. Cronin will play the downtown venue on Tuesday, September 15th. Tickets for the show will go on sale this Friday, May 15th, for $13 in advance, $15 day of.

Yes YES Drops Latest Song “Korean girls”

Buffalo’s most interesting man, Michael Ersing (aka Yes YES), continues to make Korea his new home. The always fascinating folkie has been making the most of his time overseas, appearing on Korean shows Hey Rookie and BalconyTV over the past year, and just last week, Yes YES dropped his latest song, the understated “Korean girls.” Featuring a very Andrew Bird like whistling intro, a melancholy Ersing delivers a bare bones, Jeff Buckley-esque number. Give it a listen below.

Just Announced: The Tallest Man on Earth

Only because ESI seems to be bringing every other musician to town this summer, this morning’s announcement that The Tallest Man on Earth will be returning to Buffalo later this season was not much of a surprise at all. Kristian Matsson will be touring in support of his lush new album, Dark Bird Is Home, and will include Buffalo on his tour itinerary on Wednesday, July 22nd, graduating from Babeville’s Ninth Ward basement to its upstairs confines in Asbury Hall. I missed Matsson’s first visit to Buffalo, choosing my slow pitch softball team over the show, so I am already calling in this game (I play every Wednesday in case you were curious). In support of The Tallest Man on Earth will be the equally excellent country-folk act, Hiss Golden Messenger. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 15th, for $26.

Just Announced: Alabama Shakes

Along with this weekend’s Avett Brothers show announcement, Artpark has had a busy couple days rounding out its summer 2015 schedule. Earlier this afternoon, soul rockers Alabama Shakes revealed they too will be playing the Lewiston venue on Tuesday, September 22nd. Led by the powerhouse of Brittany Howard, the quartet released its sophomore album, the weird and diverse Sound & Colour, a few weeks back. The two shows, both presented by Funtime, will go on sale this Friday, May 15th, at noon.

Five Acts to Catch at Buffalo Porchfest

After an unfortunately soggy fall installment this past October that saw some porches take drastic measures to not cancel their shows, the Elmwood Village Associations’ Buffalo Porchfest returns tomorrow afternoon for what looks to be a pleasant day to stroll around the neighborhood for some outdoor music. Since its inception in October of 2013, the young festival, now in its forth installment, has seen a growth steady growth over its short lifespan. And while there is certainly plenty to check out this year (see the full map here), if you need some help on who to catch, here are the five acts we think you should try to check out in your travels tomorrow. Lesionread @ 179 Richmond Ave 3pm If you follow this blog regularly, then Lesionread should not be a stranger to you at this point. The pop musician is one of Buffalo’s most unpredictable and exciting live[...]

Tonight: Joe Pug

The weary, Austin via Maryland singer/songwriter, Joe Pug, makes his return to Buffalo tonight with an intimate evening set for Babeville’s Ninth Ward. The Americana artist has been making regular appearances in town on a near yearly basis, and is returning tonight to support his latest album, Windfall, which dropped earlier this spring. The gifted story teller recalls fellow folk acts like Bob Dylan, M Ward, and Tallest Man on Earth. Tickets are still available for purchase at the door for $14. Andrew Combs will be opening the show. Music begins at 8pm.

KOPPS Premiere Music Video for Single “Dumb”

Yesterday morning, Joywave BFFs, KOPPS, saw the music video for the electropop quartet’s new single, “Dumb,” premiere via All Things Go. The song has passed one million listens on Spotify so a video was most certainly in order. The Cultco Music presented clip, which was directed by Joywave guitarist Joseph Morinelli, finds a female runner becoming quite nauseous after listening to what I would assume is pretty unfavorable music. Even KOPPS’ own record doesn’t seem to help settle her stomach. KOPPS will be back in Buffalo later this month, opening for Priory at Waiting Room on May 18th, and perhaps maybe they’ll find themselves back at some point this summer. In the mean time, watch the clip for “Dumb” below.

Sixties Future Premieres Debut Tracks

New to the scene, Buffalo four-piece, Sixties Future, debuted its first two tracks this morning. Featuring Mo Halliday, the former bass player of Sleepy Hahas, the quartet dropped the double single, “Skeleton”/”Shot” via soundcloud. Of the two, “Skeleton” is the stand out track, kicking off with a very “Heroes”-esque melody and featuring bassy National-like vocals and some retro organs. We hear a lot of Teddybears in the song. Both tracks can be streamed over at the band’s soundcloud page. Listen to “Skeleton” below.

Live at Larkin Unveils Summer Schedule

Minutes ago at a drizzly Larkinville, the Live at Larkin summer schedule was revealed.
