Tonight: Lazlo Hollyfeld & Friends Play Arcade Fire

Beloved Buffalo experimental rockers Lazlo Hollyfeld have previously taken on the music of Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, and Radiohead, and tonight they’re playing twenty… yes twenty Arcade Fire songs at the Mohawk, which is the closest we’ve gotten to the real thing since the fancy dress loving Arcade Fire has chosen to skip playing Buffalo for the last 12 years. If you caught their Radiohead In Rainbows shows last year at Iron Works and The Bug Jar you know Lazlo Hollyfeld will do a very good job, and with a whole bunch of accomplices joining them to generate that big Arcade Fire sound, tonight could be a real pre Halloween treat. Tonight as everyone gets all spooked up and dressed for Halloween. Some notable Buffalo bands will be doing the same. Starting the night, emo singalong all-star group, Girl Jeans to the stage. Complete with guyliner and lip rings, they’ll bring all your favorite My Chemical Romance and Brand New songs back to life and make them sound way better than they have any right to. Following that, brace yourself, as Lazlo Hollyfeld tackle not one, but two full sets of one of the greatest artists of the 21st century, LCD Soundsystem. It’s never too early to plan for Halloween. With Every Time I Die set to hit the road for the spooky season, we had to put our annual Soul Patch Halloween bash on hold for the year and look elsewhere for our yearly rager. In comes Lazlo Hollyfeld. The long time experimental rockers, fresh off tackling Radiohead’s In Rainbows and then some this spring and summer, will next take on the catalog of DFA heavyweights LCD Soundsystem on Friday, October 28th at Mohawk Place. The legendary dance-punk group triumphantly returned to the festival stages this year, and with a new album in the works, it seemed hitting for the Buffalo band to dive into James Murphy and crew’s collection of tracks. Joining the Lazlo crew will be tribute band Girl Jeans. It’s been good times/bad times lately for local Radiohead fans: good times because the legendary UK art rockers just released their 9th studio album A Moon Shaped Pool, bad times because as of right now the band hasn’t scheduled a show for Toronto, depriving us for now of our customary pilgrimage up the QEW to see them. Hopefully that will change; hopefully Radiohead isn’t put off from playing Toronto after that regrettable stage collapse five years ago. In any case the new album is great (and their darkest record to date), and Lazlo Hollyfeld and friends from Applennium will be all we need, with a special performance of the band’s 2007 classic In Rainbows tonight at Buffalo Iron Works. Unlike the album, the performance will not be  “pay what you will” (a strategy that only works for Radiohead… the brilliant buggers) and will instead feature an entirely reasonable $7 cover. There are just too many jokes I could make about the title of this post, so I’m just going to leave it alone. All jokes aside, Allentown house venue Little Baltimore is hosting a stacked lineup of bands tonight for your listening pleasure that is just straight up dreamy. The all local bill consists of dream pop act Coral Collapse, folkgaze act The Leones, post jammers Lazlo Hollyfield, and the return of Buffalo post rock / shoegazers, Tomoreaux. Doors open at 8pm, with a music starting some time around 9pm. For only 3 bucks at the door, how could you possibly have a better Saturday night? After dropping a crowd stirring performance at the Night Lights Festival this past September, long time experimental rockers Lazlo Hollyfeld (& Friends) will once again tackle their reoccurring tribute series to the Talking Heads this evening at McGarret’s. Since its debut at Pearl Street’s New Years Eve covers party in 2009, the tribute show has seen many different variations at venues and events all over town. Playing the part of the always revolving “Friends” role this evening will be Dave Calos (Bearhunter, Applennium), Chris Groves (Fourem, Applennium), both of whom joined Lazlo at Night Lights for the performance, and Ryan Campbell, currently drumming in Lazlo lead guitarist’s Sonny Baker’s fleshed out solo project. Music kicks off at 10pm and will go long into the night as the band plans two long sets. Cover will be $5 at the door.

Tonight is one of the most stacked bills I’ve seen in awhile as four completely terrific take the stage at Nietzsche’s tonight. Kicking off things is local electro-pop artist, Space Cubs. Knowing little to nothing about her, I saw her open for Majical Cloudz a couple years ago at the Tralf and was absolutely blown away. Her fairly expansive music means at times her work sounds reminiscent of everyone from Portishead to Neon Indian. Either way, this songstress creates an utterly enchanting show. Following that is Humble Braggers who are fresh off the release of their supremely impressive Disposable Friends EP. The band’s modern synth-rock sound is immediately infectious and there’s no doubt they’s put on a truly thrilling show. But the fun doesn’t stop there. The Burchfield Penney, in collaboration with M&T Bank, will once again host its monthly Second Friday event this evening, this time featuring music from Lazlo Hollyfeld on the gallery’s front yard. Lazlo Hollyfeld is an instrumental art-rock group that originated in Buffalo in 2003. The long time act has a sound that teeters between mellow and intense grooves with a lot of experimentation. While at the Burchfield Penney, the gallery will also be up and running inside, and visitors will even have the opportunity to create their own art until 7:30pm. If you are looking for a night out away from the kids, or a place to bring them, Burchfield Penney is the place to be tonight. Music begins at 5:30pm. Sonny Baker Premieres First Single from Upcoming Full Band EP

Today we have a release from Steak and Cake that is certainly worth noting. Sonny Baker, member of a bazillion other bands (Lazlo Hollyfeld, Wooden Waves, A Hotel Nourshing, etc.), has released the first single from his new project that’s bound to rock your face off. The song is called “You’re a Disaster/I’m a Disaster,” and will be featured on his upcoming, full band EP, Flesh It Out. It’s very reminiscent of old Japandroids: loud, simple, lo-fi, and just plain fun. The single opens up loud and throws dynamics out of the window. Immediately, we have the framework for the song  — a droning rhythm guitar with a short repetitive riff floating on top of it. The first verse comes in hot with slightly distorted vocals. There are a couple of different time changes in the song giving it a tiny bit of a math-y feel, but overall this is[...]

As a solely instrumental rock band, Buffalo’s Lazlo Hollyfeld are able to create vivid, melodic tracks with often a pensive atmosphere. With three full-lengths and two EPs to their name, the latest of which being 2010’s Desert, the band is working on their newest album and have been touring in addition to playing various local shows throughout this year. Guitarist and singer/songwriter Sonny Baker, also of indie-rock outfit Wooden Waves, brings an understated, yet emotive style of playing to Lazlo, using the group as an outlet for his more challenging and experimental inclinations. Tonight the band will appear following an opening set from Rhubarb at McGarret’s on Elmwood Ave. Music starts at 10pm. On what appears to be another one of the best local bills of the nearing winter season, three revered Buffalo acts will be taking over Mohawk Place this Saturday night. The all-too-elusive Applennium will be bringing their affecting, dreamy blend of indie folk to the stage, joined by symphonic mood-rockers Strange Acres and the cerebral instrumentals of Lazlo Hollyfeld. Each of these three talented Buffalo acts really pulls out all the stops to ensure that their live shows are not easily forgettable, so if you’re not in a candy coma from last night’s shenanigans, you better make sure you’re at Mohawk Place tonight. Yes, it might snow—but this is Buffalo. Don’t be a wuss. In what we hope and anticipate to become a yearly staple in Allentown’s music triangle, Herd Fest starts this weekend at Hardware, Duke’s and Nietzsche’s. Outside of this unofficial triangle but very much a part of the action, Spiral Scratch Records, Black Dots and College St. Gallery will also be holding showcases of their own. What is a showcase, you ask? Well, it was when contestants came down and bid on things like beds and trips to the rainforest and Toyota Corolla’s and made chit chat with Bob Barker. What is a showcase in the context of this article, you ask? Well, friends of buffaBLOG were invited to host a night of music at each venue by hand-picking their favorite Buffalo acts.
