Wednesday, November 13th @ 7:30pm Say Anything @ RiverWorks Mid-aughts pop-punk royals Say Anything are in town mid-week to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their breakthrough album Is a Real Boy on Wednesday. Is a Real Boy holds a place in the heart of many millennials, as the album was almost anthemic with themes of defying the norm and embracing oneself. The band will be playing the album in its entirety, which will surely be accompanied by a chorus of hundreds of die hard fans. Hopefully, the band has time for their latest album …Is Committed, as it is a promising evolution on the band’s signature edgy delivery. Tonight: Handsome Jack Album Release Party

Tonight is a shockingly busy night for Buffalo music fans, with shows going off all over downtown, and Buffalo Iron Works has a killer show lined up with soulful Lockport rock revivalists Handsome Jack celebrating the release of their third album Everything’s Gonna Be Alright at Buffalo Iron Works with heavy duty psych rockers Deadwolf and garage rock outfit Johnny Nobody. If you know anybody who says “rock is dead” you can tell them to get out of the house more and  send them down to the Cobblestone District to hear up to the minute new tunes from Handsome Jack, and possibly catch a taste of the new stuff on the horizon from the ever ambitious Deadwolf, who’ve been hard at work on a follow up to Heavy Heart. It’s all going down tonight, and doors are at 8pm and cover is $12.

For the second year in a row, Nietzsche’s will be the site for a Harvest Sum reunion as the widely influential collective of musicians and friends will come together for the label’s Herd Fest showcase. Since forming in 2004, HS has featured some of Buffalo’s finest bands, including the Old Sweethearts, Besnyo, Sleeping Kings of Iona, Roger Bryan & the Orphans, and more. As groups have called it quits, band members have come and gone, and children have arrived, HS shows have started become a rare occurrence. The temporary closing of Mohawk Place, the surrogate home to most of the bands’ members, certainly didn’t help either. But once or twice a year, a handful of the acts get together and remind you how special each of them still are to the city. Tonight: The Soft Love

Don’t miss new-kids-on-the-block The Soft Love playing Nietzsche’s tonight at 9pm The young local group, which played its debut show at the same Allentown venue on Jan. 17 of this year, brings together members of the Buffalo-based rock groups Son of the Sun and the Thermidors. With The Soft Love being so young – and with next to no recorded material of theirs yet released – it’s still anyones guess what exactly they will bring to the stage tonight. But the Thermidors have a clear affinity for classic rock, blues and garage rock. Meanwhile, Son of the Sun – now defunct – were more informed by shoegaze and moody post-punk (think Interpol or Joy Division with more traditional rock vocals). Desert rockers Johnny Nobody and the garage rock trio, The Naturalists, will open the show. Nietszche’s is located at 248 Allen St. Cover is $5.

By all accounts, Johnny Nobody is a forgotten band. The trio of Lockport natives—Andrew Vaeth (guitar/vocals), Colin Roberts (bass) and Jay White (drums)—haven’t released an album or been out on tour in over three years. According to the now-thirty-something Vaeth, he may be old to even be in a band. “I’m getting too old for this shit,” he coyly said with his signature crooked smile, eyes hiding behind his Ray Ban sunglasses. “Oh, what are you doing tonight?” he said, mimicking what may have been an actual conversation. “Oh, my band is playing at this shitty bar, and you should definitely not come.” Roberts smiled and shook his head from the backseat of the moving van. Vaeth jumps onto the 190 North to make the thirty minute trek to Lockport, New York, where Nobody now rehearses. “You ever been to Lockport?” he asked. I shake my head no. “That’s probably a good thing,” he said with another smile.[...]

Back in 2006, I really didn’t know much at all about Buffalo’s local music scene. I just graduated from college and returned home to figure out my next move. While working part time at UB, my boss turned me on to this band he liked from this local label. He told me a guy he went to high school with played guitar in it and I should check it out. Said it had some poppy Wilco vibes going on. He burned me a copy of the Old Sweethearts’ Arms of the Town and I was hooked. I didn’t know there was local music that could affect me like those bigger bands that stopped in our city once in a blue moon, if we are lucky. I wanted to find more acts like this. Local H, the Zion, Illinois native grunge act, is celebrating twenty four years as a band this year. If you are like me, you have not seen the alternative rock veterans with their new drummer, Ryan Harding. Harding marks the third to sit behind the drum kit. As a 90’s kid, I grew up with Joe Daniels, who appeared on the albums Ham Fisted, As Good As Dead, and Pack Up the Cats. Those albums produced such favorites as “Bound for the Floor,” “High Fiving Motherfucker” and “All the Kids Were Right”. I am also vaguely familiar with Brian St. Clair, but Daniels will always be my favorite “Darren.” After over two decades worth of work, Local H still manages to pique the interest of old fans and new fans a like.
