Tonight: Sonny Baker

Mohawk Place is host for tonight’s jam fest where Sonny Baker will be playing another of their exciting live shows in anticipation of their new EP, Steady Hands Dead Tired. From the single,”Reluctant Thief” the EP is looking to be a solid release to close out 2017. It’s going to be a packed night of jams, as sharing the stage will be hip-hop/jazz outfit, RADARADA who are going to keep everyone warm everyone up with their funk grooves. Also on the bill are indie rockers, Passed Out and Hundred Plus Club, who are just coming off their recent release, Everybody’s Friend. Hundred Plus Club – Everybody’s Friend

Everybody’s Friend, the recently released album from Cheektowaga indie rockers Hundred Plus Club, gets going right from the start, with the frenetic opener “Twice the Pride, Double the Fall” bringing forth all the attitude one might expect from a tune about dismissing a relationship on the brink of toxicity, not to mention employment of a thrilling guitar sound similar to something one might hear on a Sleater-Kinney record. Despite its title seeming somewhat silly, the second song in the tracklist, “Grilled Cheese for Stephanie,” changes tones from its predecessor, deceptively acting as an emotional and romantic reveal of fervent feelings for the eponymous girl. “Exit” is a catchy-as-can-be track built upon unrestrained rhythm and a guitar line evocative of surf rock. The ensuing song, the subtle display of confidence “Cooler,” is engaging and soothing, with its guitar line trickling down like raindrops. It reaches an epoch two and a half[...]

Tonight: Hundred Plus Club

Head down to Allen tonight for a nice little gig celebrating the release of Hundred Plus Club’s new EP.  Their new 6 song EP, titled Everybody’s Friend, just dropped on Admirable Traits Records, and will be bringing their live set to Nietzsche’s tonight with the help of some nice locals and one touring act.  Newly formed local pop punk act Mason Jar will be kicking things off, followed by Little Image, and indie act all the way from Dallas, TX.  Hundred Plus Club will play some tracks off of their new EP, and then Buffalo’s own raucous rock trio, MAGS, will close things out. Doors open for the show at Nietzsche’s at 9PM, and with a cover of only $5, you can’t go wrong.  Beware though, the show is strictly 21+.

Hundred Plus Club Drop Music Video for “Cooler”

Buffalo indie rock act Hundred Plus Club have dropped a new visual for “Cooler,” the latest single off their upcoming EP Everybody’s Friend, a video that manages to capture the band’s true lo-fi essence. Nestled between a giant projection screen and projector, the band churns out their latest indie rock entry as a myriad of hazy colors, including plenty of blues and reds, and shapes dance across their faces. Angular guitars and cymbal crashes swell and build to a satisfying crescendo as the video fades out with the band’s name and song title flashed across the screen in a familial 80’s graphic font. The new clip was shot by James Carriero, directed by drummer Burak Spoth and co-directed by singer Zain Shirazi. Tonight: Hank & Cupcakes

Tonight Nietzsche’s will be jumping thanks to an incredible slate featuring the thunderous dance punk of Hank & Cupcakes and some of Buffalo’s most forward looking acts. Hailing from Brooklyn, Hank & Cupcakes, aka Sagit Shir and Ariel Scherbacovsky, rock an evolving, mighty sound that currently skews more punk than dance on their third full length release Cheap Thrill, while still keeping those danceable beats coming. Opening the show will be R&B crooner from the future Saint Opal, grunge rock heroes SMUG, and charming vintage alternative rock revivalists Hundred Plus Club. Doors open at 9pm and cover is $6.

buffaBLOG is proud to launch the first day of events for this year’s Herd Fest. A lot of planning and curating went into crafting these shows and we are psyched to gather some of the most buzzed about local and regional acts for your viewing/listening pleasure. We encourage you to seek out bands you are not familiar with, and bounce around from venue to venue to get a real feel for what Western New York’s music scene is like in 2017. Mohawk Place opens it doors at 7pm for a night that will please any music fan. Tonight: Cooler EP Release

Phantom Phuzz, the newest six song release from Cooler, comes as a follow up to their hard-hitting EP 1993 released last September. From beginning to end, it’s easy to hear growth in musicality from the local four-piece. The EP opens with a haunting post-rock influenced jam that does its job setting the tone for what follows. Dynamics and harmony between male and female vocals is this EP’s strong suit. The conscious approach to bringing out each lead vocalist’s natural abilities  is evident. I’m a huge fan of Run For Cover Records’ shoegaze all-stars, Pity Sex, who Cooler reminds me a lot of. But in contrast to them, it’s really nice to hear deliberately crisp vocals paired with all the fuzz. It amplifies the melodic hooks and adds a whole new element of charm to each tune. “Days”, the second track on the EP and also my favorite, is the best illustration of this. In celebration[...]

Hundred Plus Club – For You

Hundred Plus Club is an impressive group that shred something similar to Tokyo Police Club and Dinosaur Bones. For You, their newest six-song effort, is a glorious scientific approach to solid indie rock that will make you want to see them live. The first track, “Reversed” starts off with post-punk distorted guitar chords. Then, the whole band kicks in  with deliberate fashion – the song is very urgent despite sufficient reverb. “But I never know what you’re think of, what you’re thinking on,” tells the sad story of relatable anxiety. The verses are stuffed with full-sounding guitar chord strums. The chorus’ guitars bounce excitingly between the phones. There’s one last flourish before the song ends as timely as it began. “Entropy” is more bass-y than the first song – a lush electric bassline pulls the listener in. These boys remain just as urgent. Tonight: Pinkerton 20th Anniversary Show

Tonight celebrate the 20th anniversary of Weezer’s sophomore classic Pinkerton with some of Rochester’s best musicians at DBGB’s on Allen Street.  The frankly terrific Rochester scene will be represented by members of Pleistocene, the Ginger Faye Bakers, Talking Under Water, FM Green, and Down To Earth Approach, who will be in town to convene a tribute to the dark and abrasive cult hit, a favorite of Weezer obsessives. Local indie rock quartet Hundred Plus Club, celebrating the release of their debut EP will be opening the show with harmonious Buffalo grunge rockers Cooler. Doors open at 9pm and cover is $5.

Hundred Plus Club Releases Debut EP

Local garage rockers Hundred Plus Club have just released their debut three-song EP, full of frantic, dance rock. This fresh-faced act recently recorded with Nick Borgosz at World of Noise Studios (Bryan Johnson & Family, M.A.G.S.). We recommend these guys if you would be interested in hearing what Dave Monks (Tokyo Police Club) would sound like as front man of The Rapture or Interpol. Tonight: The Leones with Applennium

Headlining their first show in Buffalo, local shoegaze/dream-pop band The Leones are a newly formed duo comprised of singer/songwriter Justin Bachulak and guitarist Dustin Lau, who met at show at Babeville’s 9th Ward while Bachulak was playing with Americana act Crows and Jays. Combining ethereal, contemplative guitar tones with jazzy keys and dark atmospherics, the pair plan to release their debut LP, Ghost In The City early next year after a string of regional tour dates to promote the new material. Tonight, the band will perform at the Studio at Waiting Room along with local indie rock acts Applennium and Hundred Plus Club. Tickets for the all ages show are $8 and can be purchased here.
