Soul Patch w/ Sixties Future at Mohawk Place (10/30/15)

For the second year in a row, we teamed up with Buffalo alt-rock cover kings Soul Patch for sold out, Halloween party banger. With buzzing local rockers Sixties Future opening, Soul Patch proceeded to unleash two nostalgia heavy sets on to Mohawk Place’s packed crowd. Tonight: Halloween Tribute Party

Cover shows are hands down my favorite Halloween tradition. When else can you see all your favorite classic punk bands on the same stage? One year, I got to see Slayer, SSD, the Misfits, and the Ramones together on the same stage and Lifetime, the Lawrence Arms, NOFX, and Descendents in the same weekend. This Halloween at Mohawk Place, you can see the Naturalists as Pavement, Wolf as the Replacements, members of Orations, A House Safe for Tigers and TMMC as Joy Division, and a Governess’ rendition of Turbonegro. The Halloween tribute is $5 if you wear a costume because why wouldn’t you. The punk imposters go on at 8pm. CC Death Squad will play creepily in between sets. Don’t miss your probably only chance to see Pavement and the Replacements.

Tonight: Soul Patch

Keith Buckley is a man of many talents. Of course, you may know him as the local guy who yells a lot as the singer of hardcore act, Every Time I Die. Other than that, he leads a fairly simple life: getting tattoos, hanging out at the Pink, giving out wise and loving advice in The Public, writing for Comedy Central shorts… and of course, dressing up like Kurt Cobain and covering 90’s alternative hits. You can see the latter of those things happen tonight at Mohawk Place as Soul Patch headlines buffaBLOG’s now annual Halloween party. Soul Patch is of course fronted by Keith, with Steve Micciche (also of ETID), Niko Georgiadis, Joey Dynamite, Jeff Schaller, and Jessika Schreiber joining the party. Sixties Future, who have been making plenty of waves locally in 2015 with their indie-alt rock sound, will be opening. If you haven’t seen them yet, now[...]

Column 34: Shaun of the Dead‘s Harmonious Relationship with Pop Music

Annnnd we’re back. After a long hiatus, we’ve returned with the latest installment of Screened Plays, the place where cinema and pop music collide. And just in time for Halloween, our good friends at North Park Theatre are showing one of my all-time favorite comedies: Shaun of the Dead. While many directors (Quentin Tarantino, Danny Boyle, Martin Scorsese) have a famously close relationship with pop music, I would argue perhaps no filmmaker has ever had quite as harmonious a relationship as Edgar Wright. Even going back to his early days with Spaced, his comedies looked different, moved different, and definitely sounded different from anything else on television. This is because Wright’s approach to filmmaking much more unique than that of most comedy directors. While many comedy films rest on the strength of either their writing or lead stars, Wright’s comedies are notably more visual. Perhaps the greatest weapon in his comedic arsenal is[...]

Howlo & Pleistocene Team Up for Halloween Split

Halloween is always a fun time to track new music out of Western New York as bands get into the holiday spirit and share some new spooky flavored tunes. And right on cue, early this week, two of our favorite Rochester acts, Howlo and Pleistocene, teamed up to release a timely split LP, Ghost Walk. The childlike harmonies on Howlo’s menacing opening cut, “All Hallow’s Eve,” make comparisons to Dead Man’s Bones hard to ignore, while later on, the four piece dips into some 90’s nostalgia on its cover of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer theme. Pleistocene’s half is decidedly lo-fi featuring some eerily haunting and rather sweet cooing from Katie Preston. The quartet’s split contributions feature some surfier vibes than its normal catalog as the LP stand out track, “Natura Combo,” sounds like the band has been hanging out with Harmonica Lewinski a bit as of late. The two bands will be playing cuts[...]

buffaBLOG Halloween Playlist 2015

Halloween is a wonderful time of year. Parties, scary movies, inappropriate uses of black face, schizophrenic weather, sexy Donald Trump costumes, themed playlists… this time of year has it all, and we here at buffaBLOG have you covered for the first and last ones. David Bowie with Frank Black – “Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)” In honor of news that Sir David will be releasing a new album January 8, 2016 (his birthday), here’s a live clip from 1997 featuring Bowie and Black Francis performing the 1979 classic. Can’t believe this clip is almost 20 years old. The Flaming Lips – “The Terror” (live) The terror in question is more existential than diabolical. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds –  “Red Right Hand” This one is for The X-Files fans out there. Two more months to new episodes! Hopefully they live up to our expectations! Pink Floyd – “Careful With That[...]

Just Announced: buffaBLOG Presents Halloween w/ Soul Patch

buffaBLOG is pumped to announce our second annual Halloween party, teaming up once again with local 90’s alt-rock cover band, Soul Patch, and buzzing indie rock newcomers, Sixties Future, on Friday, October 30th at Mohawk Place. Expect a riotous night filled with zany costumes, debauchery, and losing your voice screaming along with some of the very best(?) songs from two decades ago. Pre-sale tickets can currently purchased here, and it might be a good idea to grab one ahead of time: last year’s Hamlin House party sold out, so don’t sleep on this.

Tonight: The Irving Klaws

All Hallow’s Eve in Allentown… when the weird go pro and Halloween gets back to it’s primal roots, and there’s no better place to let your freak run wild than at the Nietzsche’s Halloween Party featuring local freaks The Irving Klaws, Small Smalls and ronaldraygun. Billed as a “freakshow tribute to music from the movies,” there is no way it’s not going to be bonkers (especially with the wonderfully sinful Irving Klaws involved), but if you throw in giveaways and a costume contest with a $100 prize, a bonkers time is guaranteed. $5 gets you in and the wildness jumps off from 10 PM.

Camp Counselors Releases “Sighs” on Halloween Compilation No. 2: Gatherings

Spookytacular WNY expat, Kyle J. Reigle, records under the moniker Camp Counselors and for the second year in a row, released another track to producer’s yet-to-be-created slasher flick. The creepy new single “Sighs” has the same feel as Camp Counselors previous works, pairing well with fog coming from the ground, being unsure you locked your door on a windy night, and irrational fears that Freddy Krueger is actually a real person that wants to kill you. The track is included on Halloween Compilation No. 2: Gatherings, the second annual seasonal collection released via Reigle’s Snowbeast Records label. Gatherings also includes contributions from Teen Daze, Psychic Twin, and Medina native, Seismograph. Listen to the full comp here, and check out “Sighs” below.

Pre-sale tickets are no longer available, so get yours at the door for $20. Doors are at 10, and while costumes aren’t required, there is a costume contest. Suggestion: don’t be that guy. Yes,[...]
