Jack at Mohawk Place (3/1/18)

Singer-songwriter Brittany Costa, working under her creative moniker Jack, celebrated the release of her newest album, Alchemical Rounds (Sad Cactus Records), with a powerful and dynamic show at Mohawk Place on March 1st, in the midst of a sudden and violent winter storm. As a songwriter, Costa pulls no punches with her frank and unsparing depictions of emotional duality, the struggle between gut-wrenching despair and incandescent elation, and the music itself follows suit––sparse guitar chords giving way to gnarled waves of pummeling noise, with Costa’s resonant voice rising from a soft coo to an anguished scream. Local supporting acts that evening included lo-fi gutterpunks Saturn V, newly-minted punk quartet Slinky X, and baroque-pop favorites dreambeaches. Saturn V dreambeaches  Slinky X Jack

Tonight: Jack EP Release Party

Jack will be celebrating the release of their latest EP Alchemical Rounds with a shindig tonight at Mohawk Place with some help from Slinky X, dreambeaches, and Saturn V. Opening the show will be lo-fi punk skullcrushers Saturn V, the always wonderful dream pop of dreambeaches, and mysterious local punks Slinky X. Doors open at 8pm and cover is $10. dreambeaches – Disappearing Act

dreambeaches is a band who needs little, if any, introduction around Buffalo right now. The quartet has been making waves on the local indie rock circuit for a few years now, and after an electrifying show last week (and a forthcoming tour to boot) to celebrate the release of their latest EP, the band is bound for more than just a bit of local success. dreambeaches’ new EP Disappearing Act is our album of the week. Disappearing Act picks up just about where the band’s 2016 EP Habits left off, tightening the screws on their unique blend of math-infused indie pop. If you enjoy bands like Bombay Bicycle Club and Foster the People but crave a little something more out of your indie rock, Disappearing Act has your name all over it. The EP finds its best moments in sheer walls of tangled and exacting instrumentation, swooning choruses, and vocal harmonies[...]

Tonight: Smokin’ Black Tar

Tonight, Nietzsche’s is slated for a unique bill that boasts an impressive spectrum of genres, ranging from indie pop to rap to straight-up enthralling confusion. Arguably, the most noteworthy aspect of tonight’s showcase is the first public outing of new Buffalo-based art-rock project  Smokin’ Black Tar (featuring former members of Well Worn Boot and Mr. Boneless). The creative new project has four distinct characters – Ol’ Negro, a charismatic hobo approaching his early sixties, a raccoon aptly named Raccoon, a drummer/cottonball that loves cigars named Cotton, and lastly, a wispy unionist named Yankee Joe. We sat with Ol’ Negro to get his take on tonight’s show: “I’ve always shied away from being in a band. Something about singin’ and dancin’ for white folk just don’t sit well with me. But one day, whiles we was on the drink, Yankee Joe convinced me that we ain’t gotta do it for the folks in front[...]

Tonight: SMUG

Buffalo’s music scene is definitely fluid, with bands coming and going, frequent collaboration, and sometimes bands up and change names. Case in point: the reborn punk rock band Naturalists, now known as SMUG, who took a break, changed their sound, recorded a forthcoming debut album, and rebranded themselves with a nifty all caps name that’s got fans of Naturalists eager to see what’s next. What do these guys sound like now? Nobody knows but them, but the impenetrable mystery becomes clearer tonight at their debut show tonight the Mohawk with tuneful surf rock darlings Dreambeaches, punk rock machine The Slums, and space rock explorer Moody Cosmos. Doors at 8pm and cover is $5. Wicked Dreams/ Grown Up by The Naturalists

There’s really no denying that the Buffalo music scene is cranking right now. Collaborations aplenty, bands are going into the studio left and right, and the releases are coming hot and heavy, with the Del Paxton full length LP last week celebrated at the Mohawk and tonight at Nietzsche’s for brand new Humble Braggers. Tom Burtless and the fellas (Bryan Zells, Matt Chavanne) will be celebrating the release of the very first full length album I Know Better, I’m No Better with a ridiculously loaded lineup including CHAD VALLEY, dreambeaches, and Bottler. Recorded by Elliot (M.A.G.S., KIN) Douglas, there’s been a lot of buzz around this next step for Humble Braggers, so you’re definitely going to want to snap up I Know Better, I’m No Better to have it properly digested before the summer show season gets going. Getting the show started and making it international flair will be Oxford UK electro pop[...]
