Tonight: Dads

New Jersey’s Dads have been exploding in popularity in the past couple of years due to the resurgence of the second wave of emo which still manages to lure heartbroken high schoolers and nostalgic twenty somethings. Touring in support of their latest full, I’ll Be The Tornado, Dads’ sound can be placed right in July 2001, halfway between the evolution of Chicago indiemo and 2003’s emergence of the skinny-jeaned jaded Myspace generation. Dads will be one of the first wave of bands christening the Studio at the Waiting Room (334 Delaware Ave UPSTAIRS), with support from Tiny Moving Parts and Nai Harvest.  Doors are at 7pm with a $13 cover. Make sure to wear your cool clothes.

Tonight: K.Flay

When Kristine Flaherty was in California attending Stanford University, she began making rap music as a joke. A parody track opened the door to her passion for music and writing, and sparked her career as K.Flay. She began creating tracks last fall, uncertain of what would become of them. She sought out crowdfunding to bring her album to fruition, rather than her route signing with RCA. For her album Life as a Dog, she broke off from her major label to take initiative for more creative control over her art, and also to establish a more intimate relationship with her fans. “It seemed like everybody had an opinion. It should be more electronic, it should be more dancey, it should be more pop, but I never really fit and I never really wanted to fit the mold that they had in mind,” she said in her crowdfunding pledge video. Through crowdfunding[...]

Tonight: Adventure Club

Hailing from Montréal, Quebec, Christian Srigley and Leighton James form the dubstep DJ duo Adventure Club. They have performed at festivals such as Lollapalooza, Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival, and Electric Zoo. Presented by After Dark Entertainment, Factory Nightlife, and Funtime Presents, they will be performing at Town Ballroom, tonight. Be sure to get there early for a show that’s most likely going to sell out; the opening lineup is absolutely stacked. In addition to Buffalo’s Brother Bear, catch two local duos that have been taking things to the next level. Kyle Tatum and Brian Doyle, of Eyes Everywhere, recently released an EP that climbed the Beatport charts. In the past year, SwaggleRock — otherwise known as Buzz Trillington and Shooter McNappin — have done some traveling from coast to coast and also up across the Canadian border [soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/17602302″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /] Tonight, Friday, Sept. 5 Adventure[...]

Just Announced: The Gaslight Anthem

New Jersey’s rousing, heartland rockers, the Gaslight Anthem, are set to to play Town Ballroom later next month on Wednesday, September 17th. Frequently drawing some Springsteen comparisons no thanks to lead singer Brain Fallon’s decidedly Boss-like vocals, and because New Jersey, the band’s latest record, Get Hurt, drops tomorrow. Providing support for the Gaslight Anthem will be Against Me!. The Gainesville act, led by Laura Jane Grace, has been making Buffalo a frequent stop as of late. Co-Presented by Funtime and After Dark Entertainment, tickets go on sale Friday, August 15th, at noon. Ticket prices are $26 in advance, $29 day of. Photo Credit – Ashley Maile

Tonight: Shlohmo

A blend of heaven and hell, Shlohmo has a way of lifting the black lace veil. Vocals drowning in slowing syrup and echoing sounds, reminiscent of the acoustical ambiance of a cathedral’s vaulted ceilings. He relaxes the hyphy. Un-monikered, he goes by Henry Laufer. He is only in his early 20s and under his WEDIDIT collective, has been signed to labels (Friends of Friends, Error Broadcast) and with his  Jeremih remix, became a crate staple for DJs from all over. Initially a collegiate student of fine art, he dropped out, began producing on a serious level and eventually turned out his EP, Bad Vibes. His Myspace account got him signed to the Los Angeles-based label Friends of Friends, where he is among the likes of Daedelus, LOL Boys, Groundislava, Jerome LOL, and Salva. Shlohmo incorporates unconventional experimental sounds to his lo-fi melodically straight forward produced tracks, which makes them a bit more[...]

Tonight: Claude VonStroke

In 2005, Barclay Crenshaw took on the moniker Claude VonStroke and helped create what is now known today as the “dirtybird.” Dirtybird is a record label, a player among a crew of like-minded folks, a sound that is in and of it’s own. Dirtybird, I daresay, is a way of life, at least in regard to music. The sound vibe is bass influenced house. Signature sounds of dirtybird music include pitched down vocal samples, low-toned “uhs” and staccato beats. A dirtybird song may be easily spotted as a piece of the genre, but is undeniably in a league of its own. VonStroke, along with fellow DJs Justin and Christian Martin and Justin’s roommate Worthy, gathered together with a sound system and began playing shows at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Dirtybird players are a group of friends. At a dirtybird show, you feel like you are their friend too.[...]
