MAKEITSTOP – “Whatever You Do, Don’t Count To Five”

MAKEITSTOP is a progressive rock act from Rochester whose latest single, “Whatever You Do, Don’t Count To Five,” tickled our latent Rush sensibilities. Their music is borderline indescribable, reminiscent of the sheer fervor of RX Bandits, the musical intensity of Coheed and Cambria, and a bit of jazz flair mixed in a la The Reign of Kindo. Expect passionate sing/scream vocals overtop nimble guitar and bass riffs, with plenty of jaunty start/stop rhythmic play to engage your inner musician’s musician. There are melodies aplenty in “Whatever,” but be sure to stick around for the mid-song bass/drum interlude… The throaty bass tone paired with the snare-less snare is a real treat.   There are lots of ways to support MAKEITSTOP – check them all out here.   Whatever You Do, Don’t Count To Five by MAKEITSTOP

Alex Northrup – “Golden Child (pt. I)”

Alex Northrup is at it again, creating his hyper-unique brand of electro chamber pop with a brand new single, “Golden Child (pt. I).” Northrup has a very unique retro-meets-contemporary style that utilizes Beatles-esque instrumentation, Supertramp jauntiness, and modern-day ideation to create something just left-field of timeless, at least in the sense that it doesn’t sound quite like anything else. Plinking harpsichords and “Simply Having A Wonderful Christmastime” type synths give this a truly vintage feel, but Alex’s eclectic style keeps this rooted in 2026-type magic. Beyond all that, where are all my fellow gifted-kid-burnouts at? This one is for you, especially lyrically.   “Golden Child (pt. I)” is available now on bandcamp (embedded below).   Golden Child (pt. Singing River – Shoutin’ Good Time

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 10 years to the date that we featured Hawker M. James’ Long Playing Lo-Fidelity as our album of the week (yeah, we know, we’ve been at this for a long time)… But if it’s any indication that we’ve been on our BS for the last decade, we’re delighted to feature Singing River, which shares members (Mike specifically, more on that later); still NY-based, still making incredible music. They’re here with Shoutin’ Good Time, an Americana affair that pairs blues, country, indie rock, and folk into a rip-roaring, rowdy time… Like something you’d hear in a horn-soaked saloon. Project masterminds Mike James and Anthony Kuhn (and their accompanying band, in total, a six-piece ensemble) layer this EP thick with big guitar energy, bolstered by harmonicas, sleezy horns, and genuinely good vibes. It’s wrapped up in a nice little bow that pays homage to traditional[...]

The Ten Best Songs from Rochester in 2025

2025 felt like a landmark year for Rochester indie music, rivaling any era since buffaBLOG’s inception. We’ve dug through hundreds of songs to hand-pick our absolute favorites of the year. Did we miss that critically acclaimed jam band album or a classical musician’s final bow? Probably. But that’s not really our bag. We chose to focus on the tracks our team truly championed and debated the ones that came out on top. Here is a Spotify playlist we made with all of our picks. Without further ado, here are our favorite ten songs from Rochester in 2025.     10. Harmonica Lewinski – “Rat Race”    Rochester creepsters Harmonica Lewinski started off the year right with their beachy, 60s-era single “Rat Race,” which showcased the band’s punchbowl of surfy guitar riffs, jungle beats, and signature oddness. For a band that’s been around nearly fifteen years, Harmonica Lewinski still has got[...]

Luxury Suite – Sparrows / Starry Eyes (Evalina)

Luxury Suite might be a fresh addition to the Rochester marquee, but the DNA here is strictly local royalty. Featuring alumni from previous blog favorites SPORTS and Cottage Jefferson, the new group feels like a logical, sonic handshake between those two previous projects. They manage to fuse the angular, dancey post-punk rhythms of the former with the distinct jangle-pop sensibilities of the latter. It’s a sound that nods respectfully to New Wave titans—think the rhythmic elasticity of Talking Heads meeting the melodic jangle of The Smiths—while keeping a power-pop edge that recalls early Elvis Costello. After a summer of tightening up the set on stage, they’ve finally dropped their debut studio efforts, produced and engineered by fellow Rochester staples Josh Netsky and Sam Snyder of Maybird.   “Sparrows” serves as the high-energy introduction. It’s got a kinetic, upbeat drive where the guitars do a lot of the heavy lifting, chiming[...]

zahra – “bloom”

What is there to say about an acoustic backbone of a song – like “bloom” by zahra? It’s one of those breathless songs that sucks all the air out of the room (in a good way) – utilizing hush-hush, layered singing (a la Elliott Smith); minimal percussion; and gently-plucked acoustic guitars to great effect. Raised in Rochester, NY (our neighbor!), zahra aims to use unique songwriting tricks to convey emotion with without becoming monotonous – the warm and fuzzy tape-esque production value here certainly adds to that ambiance.   “bloom” is available now on bandcamp (below), Spotify, and Apple Music.   bloom by zahra

bugcatcher – “Hurry”

bugcatcher is one of our favorite local acts (check out our AOTW feature on Slacker here), so it’s a no-brainer that we’d feature new single, “Hurry.” Jake Denning does it again, nailing this hazy, indie-folk-emo-slacker hybrid with aplomb. Plodding acoustic guitars are layered thick, boosted by tapped drums and a foggy atmosphere, leaving just enough room for Denning’s emotive voice to peek through in a delightfully low register. This one won’t blow your shorts off with sweaty dive bar energy, but it will surely make you question your existence in the way that only a great bedroom-folk song can… And by now, you should know that’s a good thing, as we’re all insufferably existential in our own ways.   “Hurry” is available now on Raincoated Records. You can purchase via Bandcamp (below), or, on Spotify and Apple Music.   Hurry by Bugactcher

Milo – Valve/Whatever

Newly minted Rochester-based act Milo has just released a debut, two-song EP called Valve/Whatever. Inspired by raw and emotive music (think Buffalo greats Lemuria or the late ’90s/early ’00s output from Rainer Maria or Rilo Kiley), their music is largely guitar driven with raw-but-endearing vocals. Their poetic and nuanced lyrics focus heavily on storytelling with a hint of attitude; so much so that these songs, especially their charming production value, will make you want to dust off your thick, black rimmed glasses and pull out your ratty Get Up Kids track jacket like you’re discovering your favorite 2nd wave emo bands all over again.   You can catch Milo live at their next show on June 13th at the Psychic Garden in Rochester. Until then, get acquainted with Valve/Whatever (April 18th, 2025) – available now via bandcamp (embedded below), or, via Spotify or Apple Music.   Valve/Whatever by Milo

Alex Northrup – “Mutually Assured Distraction”

Listen, we’re no strangers to unique genres here at the blog, but “bargain-basement psych” is a new one for us… At least that’s the self-described qualifier that Rochester singer/songwriter Alex Northrup gives to his unique brand of chamber pop. “Mutually Assured Distraction” is the first single from Northrup’s upcoming LP, Victory Lapse, and it’s a great highlight of what we can expect from this eclectic songwriter. Tweaked harpsichord madness powers this retro-coded tune, fleshed out with strange organ tones, vintage drum machines, and Northrup’s pleasant tenor. Certainly sounding like a mashup of Goodwill-sourced instruments (in a good way!), “Mutually Assured Distraction” feels like a harbinger of a wildly inventive album to come.   “Mutually Assured Distractionis” out now via Raincoated Records. Check it out via bandcamp below.   Mutually Assured Distraction by Alex Northrup

Goat Farm – “Down the Spine”

We recently stumbled upon Rochester-based quartet Goat Farm in our inbox and couldn’t believe they hadn’t been on our radar until now. The “alternative metal” act sure makes a ton of noise with their guitar-forward, shoegaze-adjacent sound. They are hot off releasing their debut, three-song offering, Nature Takes Its Course – but our first introduction to this unit was actually the b-side to said EP, “Down the Spine.”   After a trippy, phaser-laden intro, bassist/vocalist Mimi Snyder launches in with a vocal presence that ranges from lilting, to pained, to ferocious (see the screaming around the 4:30 mark). Guitarists Sage Alice and Molly Mink conjure a maelstrom of guitar noise, often layered thick with swirling effects or heady fuzz – while drummer Stephen Coleman keeps the song pounding with hammering intensities. Shoegazers will love the quiet/loud dynamics found throughout this six+ minute journey, while metalheads and/or punks will appreciate the[...]

Jerry Big’s World Famous Band – “Birds Got Beaks”

Strap in, or at least grab a hold of something for “Birds Got Beaks,” the breakneck new single from Rochester newcomers Jerry Big’s World Famous Band. Hot off a sold-out release show, this record is a white-knuckle thrill ride that doesn’t let up from the moment it crashes in. Expect punk-fucking-rock in the vein of Minor Threat with boisterous vocals, bullying guitar riffs, and pounding kick/snare drums. These combustible sounds crowd-surf over each other before building to a detonation of melody and chaos.   With only a minute run time, “Birds Got Beaks” is a pure, raw power rush that will make you want to beat your head against a wall. Keep your eyes and ears on JBWFB and give this whiplash track a listen.   Jerry Big’s World Famous Band’s “Bird Got Beaks” is available now on bandcamp, Spotify and all major streaming platforms.   Birds Got Beaks by[...]

Harmonica Lewinski – “Rat Race”

Grab your boogie board and catch a psych-rock wave with Harmonica Lewinski’s beachin’ new single, “Rat Race.” If your new year’s resolution is to listen to more groovy music, this is the perfect place to start as these veteran Rochester scenesters and buffaBLOG mainstays kick off 2025 with a helluva luau. This instrumental track is a punchbowl of surfy guitar riffs and jungle drumbeats spiked with the band’s signature weirdness. Drink it in below and let this fun-loving five-piece bewitch you with the sounds of a party on the wrong side of the beach; the side where you might find skeletons clinking piña coladas or Uncle Fester sunbathing.   Harmonica Lewinski’s “Rat Race” is streaming now on Bandcamp, Apple Music and Spotify.   Rat Race by Harmonica Lewinski

Sublime Pr1me – “Black Jesters’ Revolution”

Rochester rhymer Sublime Pr1me flexes internal rhyme schemes, an off-center flow and expertly used interplay with production on his sharp new single “Black Jesters’ Revolution.” Riding an Adult Swim-flavored boom bap beat, Pr1me rapidly moves between his personal philosophies and others’ he sees truth in, such as Michele Fuko. Pr1me is explicit, insightful, playful and more on this track – relentlessly switching up his cadences and somehow staying on the sampled/flipped/reversed beat. Add this track to your Lupe Fiasco-Aesop Rock-Talib Kweli playlists for when you’re looking for a hip hop track with keen lyricism and a beat that keeps you on your toes too. “Black Jesters’ Revolution” kicks off Pr1me’s Back Forward EP, featuring more of the insightful rapping showed off on this track.

bugcatcher – “cadillac”

Rochester slowcore slackrockers, Bugcatcher, released a new single last month with their label Raincoated Records. The new track “cadillac” trudges on the tempo, it’s a slow burner reminiscent of Alex G’s early bedroom lo-fi recordings. The single has an earnest and no frills edge to it, recorded on a four track analog cassette tape as part of a year-long project via their label. “cadillac” finds itself with good company, splitting the LP with fellow Rochester DIY scene regulars Georgie, Home Videos and Kitchen. If you’re into this one, well I have good news for you. Bugcatcher and Georgie are both in town for this Saturday’s (December 14, 2024) non-binary THEYFEST taking apalce at Area 54/Amy’s. Doors at 3pm with a flexible $10-$15 cover. spit takes and split tapes by bugcatcher

Boy Jr. – I Love Getting Dumped

Boy Jr. is back in a big way with their new record I Love Getting Dumped. A collection of 13 breakup songs, frontperson Ariel Allen-Lubman (they/them) commands your attention as strongly as ever with their trademark genrefluid style. They speak to us on a heartfelt level, connecting with us in a nostalgic, at times comical way that speaks to anyone who has ever dealt with the death of a relationship.   The album opens with the haunting “Your Mom Is Disappointed In You.” The vocals are delivered so earnestly, you can feel the pain in their voice, expertly underscored with sparse electronics.  “I Hope You Feel Terrible” is truly a standout, easily drawing parallels with “good 4 u” by Olivia Rodrigo, or contemporaries like Kim Petras or Billie Eilish. Allen-Lubman sets the scene with a fuzzy, bouncing riff that really lets the vocals shine. Slowly building the texture, by the[...]
