Tonight: Francie Moon

Tonight, the up-and-coming lo-fi blues rock singer, Francie Moon, makes her way to Buffalo to play Mohawk Place. The young singer/songwriter has yet to release a full-length album but has produced 4 spellbinding EPs that you can find on her bandcamp. With the aesthetic of all the best early lo-fi rockers like Guided by Voices and Slint, and the songwriting of a young P.J. Harvey, this music has absolutely blown me away. Francie Moon is an artist almost destined to greater things and tonight she stops by our neck of the woods to play all the beautiful tunes that have killed me for the past week. She’ll be joined by talented Pennsylvanian artist Shane Palko, whose powerful indie-singer-songwriter sound has been making waves of late in the blogger community. The bill also features local staples Alpha Hopper, Space is Haunted, and Mr. Boneless Doors open at 8pm with a cover of[...]

Tonight: Red Show

Dreamland, the new gallery/arts cooperative on Franklin near Edward, is taking Buffalo by storm. Located in an classic Buffalo building on the border of Allentown and downtown, it’s daring but welcoming ethos and welcome sense of mischief has made it a hub of avant-garde activity, and it’s glorious front room doubles as gallery and performance space that’s one of the most fun in Buffalo. The Terror Pigeon/Rich Aucoin/Lesionread show at Dreamland a few weeks back was an exuberant adventure in communal joy, and tonight, the good times continue with Sqajacuada Creeps, Lesionread, and Bryan Johnson & Family taking the front room over and painting it red. OK, not really, but they’ve swapped all the light bulbs for red ones, and everybody’s dressing in red (golden gold is also OK), including the audience, and those white walls are going to drink it up. Doors open at 7, bands start at 8,[...]

Tonight: Robot Holiday

Catch Robot Holiday shake the rust off right after work tonight as the reoccurring musical collective breaks out the tunes and holiday spirit for the 3rd annual Holiday Live at Larkin show. Since surfacing about a decade ago, the long running group has been dropping holiday flavored albums on to the Queen City at a yearly clip. Past and present members of the collective have included Vic Lazar, Son of the Sun’s Brandon Delmont, the Hussalonia Founder, and many more. Robot Holiday dropped its latest album, the well timed Between the Snowflakes, right during the heart of #snovember. All proceeds raised from sales of the album will go towards the Food Bank of WNY. Bask in the holiday glow tonight with the cast of musicians starting at 5pm right at Larkin Square. Entry for the event is the very giving price of FREE.

Tonight: Wooden Waves LP Release Party

Wooden Waves have been around for a few years so I was surprised to see they are just now releasing their debut full length, Wilder Dreams, on December 9th. This is sure to be a welcome addition to winding down year of great Buffalo music. Tonight, they will be celebrating the record’s release on One Percent Press at Mohawk Place. To really make this a party, they have invited a few friends, making for a very strong, all local bill. Starting promptly at 9pm and for the low price of $5(ish), tonight’s bill opens up with indescribable styling and creative mind meld of Little Cake & Jack Topht. As if that was not enough, Mallwalkers and TMMC round out the bill. This promises to be a real humdinger of a night, so you have no excuse for missing this. And, if these bands were not enough, DJ-about-town, Eric Kendall, will be DJing between[...]

Tonight: Secret Pizza (Early Show)

The Hoyt House has a pretty great bill tonight, which could be the perfect pre-game for tonight’s Wooden Waves release party.  The lineup is packed by three legit Rochester bands, headlined by Rochester’s growly shoegaze quartet, Secret Pizza. Also making the 75 miles journey west on 90 is power-pop four-piece, Cult Classic, and raucous Black Eyes with a punch-in-the-face duo, i cant stop wondering. From Buffalo is Real People/False Paul hybrid project, Stoop Kid, and making the return after a one year hiatus, Tony Rocky Horror. The show is supposed to start at 5pm, so tell your boss that you think you left your iron on or something around 3pm to leave you enough time to go home and change into your cool clothes. $3 cover.

Tonight: Tiny Rhymes & Andy Pothier

Tonight Allentown’s hippest low-key venue, Pausa Art House,  is set two host two up and coming acoustic acts coming out of Buffalo. On the bill is indie-folk quartet, Tiny Rhymes, a intricately pleasant act that’s lead by effortlessly gripping vocals. Sharing the stage is Andy Pothier, a local staple and current percussionist for Buffalo folk-stompers Pine Fever. Pothier’s delicate sound will make you want to pull your chair forward so you don’t miss anything. Doors are $7 or $5 if you still have your student ID with an 8pm start. Tonight: Roz & the Rice Cakes

Tonight, the Hive plays host to Providence, RI’s instrument swapping, experimental pop trio, Roz & the Ricecakes. The three-some was recently featured in the debut installment of 1809 Studios new live session series recorded in Macedon, NY, right outside of Rochester. Check out the clip here. Masterminded by local label Steak & Cake Records, the bill also features a trio of blog favs, Newish Star, Mink, and Aircraft, all for the ridiculously low price of $5. Out of deference to the neighbors (to whom you should be cool if you’re going), the show starts at promptly 7pm.

Tonight: Facility Men

Facility Men are messy in the best kinda way. Loose and gravelly, discordant rock, with a rough-around-the-edges approach…probably one of the coolest current bands in the Buffalo crop. Plus Teo’s a madman live so you should probably check em out. They’re playing tonight at the Jungle Gym (9pm), with those fleshiest of Fleshy Mounds and Slotfillers. You know where the Jungle Gym is and if you don’t, well, don’t ask me. $5 as per the usual.

Tonight: Peelander-Z

Mohawk Place welcomes music (and anime) festival staple Peelander-Z to Buffalo tonight for a colorfully comical show. The NYC via Japan via outer space group formed in 1998, and have made an indelible mark on the music scene, mainly due to their live performances, which rely heavily on audience participation and sassy superhero-esque costumes. The group is color coded, and after Peelander-Blue left the group in 2008, Peelander-Green joined Yellow and Red on their quest to become the best Japanese action comic punk band in the game. They are joined by Pink (vocals), Purple (bass), and Black, who plays guitar and produces. Their bold anime-inspired costumes are just that, so don’t believe the band when they tell you that it’s their actual skin. Concertgoers may want to consider wearing workout clothes, as the group fully expects audience participation in various cardio-friendly activities, including bowling, limbo, and some ubiquitous cowbell-ringing. Joined[...]

Tonight: Single Mothers

After quitting the band for a few years to do some gold prospecting (no, I’m not kidding), singer Drew Thomson has rejoined Single Mothers to come back with a vengeance. Let’s just say the London, Ontario punks are going to make Buffalo a filthier place tonight. Their songs are full of straightforward dirty guitars and half-grunted, half-Hold Steady vocals. A few words to describe these dudes: brash, dirty, self-loathing, and loud. Tonight’s support comes from some of WNY’s sleaziest sounding bands, including The Slums, Cal Dripken, and Rochester’s DRUSE… Sleazy in a good way of course. The show is at 6:30 at The Studio at the Waiting Room. $10, all ages.

Tonight: Mitski

Hump day is upon us. And if you’re sitting at home thinking to yourself “I wish my hump day wasn’t such a drag…”, then read on, my friend. Brooklyn-based indie songstress Mitski will be performing at Northrup House tonight in support of her marvelous new record bury me at make out creek. There is a pleasing duality to the new record, sometimes folk-tinged and smooth like an early Jenny Lewis, other times angular and challenging like some of St. Vincent’s newer material. Mitski’s songs are equal parts beautiful, wounded, and weird, but her lyrical prowess is what drives it all home. bury me at make out creek is a buzz machine, so this may be one of the last opportunities to watch her play in such an intimate setting. Also on the bill for tonight: Portland’s psych-folker Johanna Warren, blog favorite Alex Berkley, Cobalt Blue, and Lawyer Sam. There is a $5[...]

Tonight: Attack of the Vinyl Mondays – Malarchuk Edition

In what should be the start of a very busy couple weeks here in town, ease the month gently as Buffalo’s best vinyl night, Attack of the Vinyl  Mondays, is back in action at Essex St. Pub later this evening. Tonight, stoner rock trio, Malarchuk, will be setting up behind the tables to spin some of their favorite records. Vinyl Mondays’ ringmaster, Eric Kendall, will also be on hand as usual to play the best in garage, rock, punk, and more. The vinyl starts spinning tonight at 10pm. Cover is, as always, free.

Tonight: Alex Berkley

End your stuffed holiday weekend strong tonight as Elmwood village every man, Alex Berkley, takes the stage at the Gypsy Parlor over on Buffalo’s West Side. 2015 looks to be a busy year of projects for Berkley, between a hopeful full length with his backing band, the Atlanta Falcons, to a new solo album to some collaborations with fellow Queen City singer/songwriters, Damian and Sonny Baker. The latter pairing just released a couple demos earlier this week that you can listen to here. Music begins later this evening at 8pm. Folkfaces will also appear on the bill. Cover is $3 Photo Credit – Silo Sessions

Tonight: Zealot

For some people, Thanksgiving has made this whole week one big weekend. For others, especially folks working in retail, it’s been a few pieces of turkey and a mad dash back to work to sell people happiness. My point: we’re just coming out of that haze. It’s the real weekend now and your familial, occupational and gastronomical responsibilities are hopefully, momentarily behind you. So if you’re so inclined, check this show at Milkie’s. We’ve got The Beggar’s Best bringing some rock on the grunge spectrum that touches on Nirvana and Sonic Youth while still leaving room for poppier moments. And we’ve got Zealot, WNY’s fuzz-rock-shoegaze-college-indie-punk-grunge-noise-rock-lo-fi-princes-or-kings-or-paupers. You’ll be delighted. Kicks off at 9:30 pm. Facebook event here. Tonight: Public School

With the first month of The Public, Buffalo’s newest alternative publication, in the books, the paper is set to host its first party later this evening at Hardware. Titled Public School, and brought to you behind the minds of Artvoice’s Night Shift series, the monthly dance series will bring you a new collection of DJs and bands from WNY and beyond for each installment. Tonight’s showcase features sets from DJ Dovey, MAXY NY, and Rick Jameson. Cover will be $5 at the door, and the party gets started at 11pm.
