Tonight: The Tins

Local indie pop act The Tins are returning to Mohawk Place this evening.  Recently releasing their self-titled full-length album, The Tins have received a warm welcome among listeners.  Notably, The Tins has been included in the NACC Chart’s “20 Most Added Songs.” Having formed nearly ten years ago, The Tins continue to evolve as a band, most recently  introducing more psychedelic flavor with their latest release.  “Jubilee,” a new single from the album, is especially airy and light, seeming to take influence from The Beatles (“Penny Lane” crossed my mind on this one).  Having collaborated with the Goo Goo Dolls’ Robby Takac, The Tins is something to be admired, adding to the phenomenal sounds coming out of the Queen City lately. Joining The Tins tonight are Buffalo groups Witty Tarbox, and newcomers Leyda.  From the Capital Region, indie pop rock band Lucy rounds out the lineup. Doors open at 8pm to[...]

Tonight: Seafox

Ethereal folk act Seafox is returning from a romp on the west coast for a night of beautiful, intimate music. Seafox (aka William Fortier) specializes in lush compositions that sound beautiful fleshed-out, but could also certainly stand on their own. Support tonight comes from bedroom folk quartet heave and solo-act (and purveyor of sorrow), Ian McCuen. Tonight’s show is $7. Show up early at 7pm – music will end by 10pm. A friendly reminder that Sugar City is an all-ages venue with no drugs/alcohol/bad attitudes.

Tonight: Social Distortion

Legendary greaser punk rockers, Social Distortion, roll through Buffalo’s Main Street tonight to rock Town Ballroom as part of their cross-country tour. Having stood the test of time since their inception in 1978, Social D is the Cadillac of the original SoCal punk movement. The seemingly invincible singer and guitarist, Mike Ness, has led the group through a storied three decade run and pioneered an invigorating throwback punk rock ‘n’ roll sound with rockabilly style. Throw on your whitest tee, slick your hair back and don’t miss this once in a lifetime chance to see Ness strum his Les Paul and croon jukebox classics like “Story of My Life” and the Johnny Cash cover, “Ring of Fire.” Opening acts include Will Hoge and Pony Bradshaw. Doors at 7pm. ID required for entry. Show is sold out.

Tonight: William Elliott Whitmore

Iowa DIY artist William Elliott Whitmore is live tonight at Rec Room! Throughout his almost 20-year career, Whitmore has released seven full-length albums; his most recent release, Kilonova, is starkly different, being his first cover album. As an artist that takes influences from folk, blues, and punk rock genres, Whitmore pays homage to those that have greatly impacted him. Most notably included are Bad Religion (“Don’t Pray on Me”), Johnny Cash (“Five Feet High and Rising”), and Bill Withers (“Ain’t No Sunshine”). Keeping the integrity of the included songs, Whitmore delivers the messages in a significantly different manner that’s wholly and beautifully his own. Rec Room doors are at 7pm tonight. Tickets are $12 in advance. For those 16 and older, please be ready to show ID. Those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Written by Samantha Schweitzer

Tonight: Titus Andronicus

Tonight is a perfect night to have your face melted off by the incomparable indie rock champions, Titus Andronicus, performing at the 9th Ward. Formed in New Jersey in 2005, singer-songwriter, Patrick Stickles, leads this rousing quintet with an unmistakable wild man voice that’s impassioned and rough as sandpaper. After years of silence, the group has returned with a new full-length, A Productive Cough, and the All Hallows’ Eve EP, Home Alone on Halloween. Their robust and evocative catalog has evolved from frenetic indie rock with punk accents to ensemble, working class piano rock that will make for an unforgettable live show. Sharing the stage is your new favorite band and Portland, OR’s very own, Summer Cannibals. If you like loud, female-driven garage rock with loads of attitude then you can’t miss this set. Singer-guitarist, Jessica Bourdreaux, glues everything together with her perfectly snobby vocals and heavy, crunchy riffs for[...]

Tonight: Sugar City’s 10th Anniversary Party with Calvin Johnson

Sugar City, the city’s only remaining DIY arts and performance space is celebrating ten years of existence in both the material and immaterial worlds tonight with two parties, an excellent lineup featuring friend of Sugar City, indie rock hero Calvin Johnson, and you beautiful people. It’s been quite the adventure for Sugar City since it’s grassroots founding back in 2008, existing first in the hearts and minds of it’s early organizers and supporters, then in a magical physical space on Wadsworth at the base  of Allentown, where magical things happened… before being gentrified out and/or beset upon by unfriendly forces, depending on who you’re talking to. Then it was back to the whole hearts and minds thing as Sugar City regrouped, staging events around the city and keeping the flame alive until an unsolicited grant from Robert Rauschenberg’s foundation put enough wind in their sails to land another wonderful space on[...]

Tonight: The Beths

Delaware Avenue’s best basement bar, the 9th Ward, plays host tonight for touring New Zealand buzz band, The Beths. Playing in support of their new album, Future Me Hates Me, The Beths will be churning out punchy lyrics with sweet vocals and driving indie rock instrumentals. The band may sound familiar as they’ve been featured heavily on SiriusXMU over the past couple months, in addition to securing clutch write-ups via Pitchfork. MC Chris is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of MC Chris is Dead tonight at Mohawk Place! Originally self-released in May of 2008, MC Chris is Dead relays the tale of the rapper’s journeys in his worldly afterlife following his red carpet assassination in the album Dungeon Master of Ceremonies. The album features the artist’s iconic high-pitched rapping voice, geek knowledge, and seamless flow. Being performed in its entirety, the album’s tantalizing rhythms and thoughtful story line will have everyone in Mohawk Place jamming! What better way to kick off the Halloween season than dancing to an album about a zombie nerdcore rapper? Doors are at 7pm with music starting at 8pm. Tonight: Kal Marks

The fourth stop in their fall tour, touring Bostonites Kal Marks play the Tudor Lounge tonight! Having humble beginnings as a solo project, the indie rock trio have released three full-length albums through Exploding in Sound Records. Typically described as “the loudest band in Boston,” Kal Marks decided to switch things up for their latest release Universal Care, reigning in their volume and lightening the tone on a few tracks. Universal Care has influences in Nirvana and sludge rock, as well as the sounds we hear coming from more modern indie rock bands, namely Pile. The latest LP has been nominated for the “Album of the Year” award for the 2018 Boston Music Awards. Kal Marks is also a nominee for “Rock Artist of the Year.” Local artists Bold Folly and Soul Butchers are joining tonight’s show. Doors are at 9pm with music beginning shortly after. $5 at the door.[...]

Tonight: Iron Chic

Kick off your weekend tonight with a rowdy punk rock show hosted by Buffalo’s freshest venue, the Rec Room. Headlining and continuing their fall tour are the fantastically kinetic and spirited Long Island five-piece, Iron Chic. These guys will slap you in their clutches with dynamic punk records that are so musically robust and melodic it will blow your mind. Expect hopscotch drumbeats driving brash, high-powered riffs tied together by lose-your-voice, sing-a-long rebel yells. If that doesn’t sound good to you, check your pulse. Adding their support are tour mates and L.A. grouch rockers, Spanish Love Songs. With instantly addictive tracks that are more like punk rock therapy sessions, this West Coast quintet are sure to turn Rec Room into a full-body bumper cars rink. Bounce off the walls and everyone around you to energizing, full-hearted melodies and full-throated vocals. If Spanish Love Songs is anything it’s emotional, so show[...]
