Polyglam – “Loss”

The dreamlike and nostalgic indie rock from Polyglam is perfect for this slow and sparkly time of year. Their particular brand of indie rock makes it sound like it’s snowing in summer time with a gentle lo-fi feel that always manages to stay upbeat and uplifting. With tasteful touches of atmospheric noise and lush harmonies, fans of Alvvays or The Marias will like what Polyglam is putting out into this world. About the song, the band says: “‘Loss’ is about the cyclical nature of relationships. This song explores a painful process: the feeling of paralysis in the aftermath of a failed relationship you took for granted, and the simultaneous realization that you’re supposed to move forward. But as you pick up the pieces, you find yourself rewriting your last chapter, holding on to the possibility this story isn’t over. Was it a loss after all?” Find “Loss” on YouTube (below)[...]

Liam Finn – “I Just Want You To Be So Happy”

Liam Finn says his new single “I Just Want You To Be So Happy” is: “A proclamation of love in a broken world” Full disclosure, we here at buffaBLOG typically have black hearts when it comes to our music tastes, so a song about true love doesn’t normally wet our whistles… That being said, Finn knocked it out of the park on this crispy indie rock jam. Chunky guitar riffing and stream-of-consciousness lyrics give this a real sincere vibe while the atmospheric slide guitar riffing and cosmic background vocals push everything to the next level. Fans of Jeff Rosenstock, Alex G, and mid-90s slacker rock are gonna go wild for this. You can find “Happy” on Spotify, Apple Music, and most other streaming services including Soundcloud (below). Sundried Whales – “Socks”

We’re really enjoying the peppy indie rock coming out of Hamilton’s Sundried Whales – we recommend starting with their latest single, “Socks.” Bursting out of the gate with turbo-charged guitar riffs and peppy, guitar-driven flavors, “Socks” is one of those songs that would sound most at home during a sweaty basement show or on stage at some dingy dive bar. Fans of PUP, Hollerado, and Jeff Rosenstock are going to love the gigantic energy on this one. Despite sounding upbeat, the song actually has a much different meaning – here’s what Sundried Whales have to say about “Socks:” “The song’s about the aftermath of breaking up with someone who is very toxic and the trials and tribulations of being a divorced cat dad” Peep “Socks” via the Bandcamp widget below, or, add it to your fav Spotify playlist. Wurld Series – “Queen’s Poisoner”

Canterbury’s Wurld Series caught our ears with the articulate slacker rock of new single, “Queen’s Poisoner.” Bringing to mind the mid ’90s IDGAF vibes of Pavement, Grandaddy, and Guided By Voices, “Poisoner” casually meanders along with it’s mid-tempo, guitar-driven backbone. Jangly rhythm guitars warble consistently, but the real flair here comes from the “skronking” guitar solo that’s laden with the perfect amount of fuzz. Intelligent lyrics are another highlight – gotta hand it to a band that can make words like “masterful tactician” sound catchy. Preview “Queen’s Poisioner” below via YouTube or add it to your Spotify playlist.

yuniVERSE – “FALL 4 U”

Indonesian-Australian artist, yuniVERSE dives into the complexities of a toxic relationship on new single, “FALL 4 U.” “FALL 4 U” dips into hyperpop territory with its autotune-heavy delivery and blasts of sparkly synths without ever straying too far into the genre’s tendency to shred ears. Instead, we get a fusion of minimalistic electronica sounds centered around the tender-but-raw delivery from yuniVERSE, who explains perfectly: “Finally getting to say all the thoughts I wish I said, out loud.” You can check out “FALL 4 U” via Soundcloud (below) or Spotify. yuniVERSE · FALL 4 U

aeonatan – “Sad Pisces”

All the way from Finland, Jonatan Stenfors is debuting his new project aeonatan with single “Sad Pisces.” Taking experimental inspiration from shoegaze, industrial, and post-punk, “Pisces” is a masterful blend of many genres that compiles into something monumental and gripping. The song starts out with riff that could fit perfectly into any Midwest-emo jam but ultimately explodes into that noisy, wall-of-sound approach we’ve all come to know and love while we’re shoegazing. Fans of A Place To Bury Strangers, Title Fight’s newer catalogue, and Amusement Parks on Fire will surely be adding aeonatan to their playlists. Check out “Sad Pisces” through Spotify or Apple Music

Nancy Whitaker – “Mantelpiece”

Nancy Whitaker (a five-piece band, not an individual) create expansive post-rock compositions informed by 2000’s garage rock influences – their latest offering, “Mantelpiece” is the perfect amalgamation of the two. With jittery percussion, massive walls of guitar noise, and a soaring vocal presence, “Mantelpiece” transcends any pigeonholed genre and becomes something that much greater. Fans of The Walkmen; Black Country, New Road; and The Districts will find lots to love here in NW’s expansive sound. You can find “Mantelpiece” via the YouTube embed below, or, on Spotify.

Midheaven – “Heaven”

Midheaven (aka creative-and-romantically-involved couple Sarah Eiseman & Andy DeLuca) have been creating visual art for others for years, silently building up their own repertoire for this very moment. The stunning “Heaven” is the duo’s first foray into the musical world, a sparkly-but-sludgy blast of dream pop and shoegaze that sounds like it was ripped straight out of a late-90s witch/vampire movie. A dirty bass groove anchors the song while drippy guitars, swelling synths, and left-field percussive instruments go supernova in the background. Sarah’s soaring vocals are the centerpiece here and her hypnotic presence brings to mind other genre luminaries like Wolf Alice, Mazzy Star, and Slowdive. DeLuca’s been traveling the world for about a decade now, but we’d never forget his Buffalo roots… That’s reason enough to check out this outstanding new project. You can find “Heaven” on Spotify, Soundcloud, and Bandcamp. You can find lots of other ways to[...]

Field of View – “Mess”

Field of View is a Chattanooga-based punk band whose “Mess” caught our ears for it’s anthemic raucousness. With it’s punchy power chord grind, “Mess” constantly maintains the spirit of punk while injecting it with a fun, jangly, almost Midwestern-esque sound. This sound is absolutely made for basement show singalongs or sweaty VFW hall pits – fans of Title Fight, SUGAR COAT, or Joyce Manor are going to dig this one a lot. All the different ways to listen to “Mess” can be found via this handy link, or, check it out via YouTube below.

Joy Downer – “Alright”

buffaBLOG mainstay Joy Downer knows how to write an indie-pop banger – we’re recommending their latest offering, “Alright.” With its bouncing bassline, simple-but-driven guitar strumming, and a nicely lilting vocal presence, “Alright” has all the markings of an iconic indie rocker. There’s something to be said about simplicity perfected, and “Alright” definitely falls into that category. Fans of The Strokes, St. Vincent, or even the vintage appeal of The Cars are gonna love this one. We’re Joy Downer stans over here at the blog – check out our previous writeups here, here, and here. Peep the music video for “Alright” below, and when you inevitably enjoy it, be sure to add it to your Spotify playlist.

Sheer Calm – “Stagnant”

Three-piece London-based act Sheer Calm put out a staggering amount of noise for being a trio, and latest single “Stagnant” is perfect proof. The group has a penchant for cacophony – between the absolutely massive bass tones and screeching, squelching guitar energy, “Stagnant” could sit comfortably on a shelf next to your favorite Death From Above 1979 or Drive Like Jehu record. If walls of guitar noise and speaker-shredding tones are your thing, Sheer Calm may be your next great obsession. You can find “Stagnant” via Sheer Calm’s Bandcamp page below. Frog – “DOOM SONG”

New York-based duo Frog (composed of brothers Danny & Steve Bateman) are back on the grind with their latest release, the 11-song GROG. We’d like to highlight the discordant fervor of single “DOOM SONG;” with it’s cacophonous guitar-driven jangle and droning vocals, “DOOM” brings to mind genre luminaries like Pile or even Modest Mouse with a touch of swampy twang. Its ascending, chromatic chord progression also brings to mind the haunting and soul-crushing crunch of Alice in Chains’ “Them Bones” without ever dipping into grunge territory. About the album, Danny further elaborates: “There are really exciting places we were able to get to on this record, places that I didn’t know existed before I found them. It feels both gothic and cartoonish to me, big gargoyles, dark skies, storms, but the statues are of ‘Aaahh!!! Real Monsters.’ Every song is a step deeper into the abyss.” Be sure to check out[...]

ALIAS – “Cursed”

French act ALIAS is here to crush your soul with the menacing indietronica of their latest single, “Cursed.” Propelled by an ultra-distorted bass thump, “Cursed” gradually transforms into a neurotic indie-rock tinged banger that seems tailor-made for dancing around your living room. Fans of the smart-but-smarmy stylings of LCD Soundsystem or the synthed-out pulse of CHVRCHES are gonna love this one. About the song, ALIAS says: “CURSED is the sweet spot where everything goes wrong.” Check out the music video for “Cursed” below, or, add it to your favorite Spotify playlist.

Day Video – “Needles and Pins”

Day Video is a solo project from David Yeend of Atlanta, Georgia and “Needles and Pins” is his latest track off of his extended play the Day Video EP. A soulful indie rock song with an infectious guitar lick, the lyrics a play awkward part of a relationship when you fuck up and are stuck walking on… wait for it… pins and needles (or needles and pins). Formed during the worst parts of the pandemic for many and finally seeing a proper release, this project is Yeend’s way of telling his own stories separate from his other project, the equally impressive (non-solo) Hearts on Speed. Mainly showcasing Yeend’s vocals, “Needles and Pins” keeps it simple with a steady backing drum beat and a warm guitar tone with an occasional background solo guitar. Fans of Pinback, Buck Meek’s less folksy tracks, or boygenius’ pop sensibilities would find a lot to enjoy here,[...]

Fan Girl – “American Cowboy Song”

Australian-based indie rock outfit Fan Girl brings us their latest track “American Cowboy Song,” and it’s a rollicking banger, to be sure. Coming in just over 2:30, it’s a perfect sandwich of blistering guitar glued betwixt (comparatively) a subdued intro and a boisterous outro. The drums, lead guitar, and synth form the crux of the aforementioned “blistering” portion of the song, giving me pleasant reminders of bands like Tired Lion, or, Jet and The Hives at their rawkiest. Speaking to the track, the band had this to say: “The song started as a silly, glitchy beat that we saw something in, and decided to flesh out and overcomplicate. In true Fan Girl spirit, we turned it into something more colourful, obnoxious and cheeky.” You can find “American Cowboy Song” on Spotify along with the equally catchy “MCF” – although a complete changeup from the zany controlled chaos of the former. If Spotify[...]
