Tonight: The Good Life

Grizzled Omaha indie vets, The Good Life, will be making a stop tonight at Mohawk Place in support of their latest album, Everybody’s Coming Down. The Good Life formed in the year 2000 as a solo project for Cursive front-man, Tim Kasher, eventually evolving into a full band while writing 2004’s critically acclaimed album, Album of the Year. If you are a fan of Cursive’s earnest storytelling stripped back another layer, then you won’t want to miss The Good Life’s set. Also on deck for this evening are fellow Saddle Creek Records signee, Jake Bellows, and Philadelphia/Brooklyn mish-mash, Field Mouse. Doors at 7pm with a $14 cover.

Following that, brace yourself, as Lazlo Hollyfeld tackle not one, but two full sets of one of the greatest artists of the 21st century, LCD Soundsystem. With many of us missing the actual band on their recent (and far too short) reunion tour, this is the perfect chance to catch all your favorite modern classics; from “All My Friends” to “Daft Punk is Playing At My House.” If there’s one shindig to get properly spooked to this Halloween, this is the one. Buffalo-based one-woman grunge revivalist, Telempathy is back with her first single off the forthcoming album, The Temple of Music. Five Jams for Your September Playlist

This past month we’ve been attached to multiple submissions that we just simply can’t get enough of. Instead of buffering up five separate blog posts, we decided to combine them into one succinct post (and Hype Machine list) in order to deliver the jams. Check out our list and add the acts to your next playlist. Classixx  It’s no secret to any music fan that Classixx is one of the most talked about acts emerging out of 2016. After years of flying under peoples radar, the electro producers had a strong first half of the year, releasing back to back breakout tracks “Just Let Go (ft. How to Dress Well),” and “Birds of Prey (ft. Joe Keefe).” Rounding out the slew of hits is the duo’s most recent ditty, “I Feel Numb,” where they two employed Holy Ghost! mastermind Alex Frankel’s retro 80s pop vocals to create an absolute earworm.[...]

Soffía Björg – “I Lie”

Icelandic songstress Soffía Björg released her debut single “I Lie” at the tail end of August and it’s been making waves in the blogosphere. Hailing from a rural area of one of the most remote places on earth, Björg’s songwriting is snarky, hi, and hyper aware. The single is all about sending trouble in a relationship, and figuring out whether or not you should be with someone. “I Lie’s” video is a retro Ed Sullivan type from the 1960s featuring Björg and her band. Fans of Neko Case or PJ Harvey would be into this one. Check it out below.

Incredible Change – “Montreal Is An Island”

Washington, DC based electro-pop project Incredible Change dropped their first single in over a year last month and we were quick to gobble it up. Under the surface, “Montreal Is An Island” is a driving and dance-y track about adventuring throughout with friends in small towns to big cities. It’s about appreciating the dedication of relationships while looking back on the memories one has made. Fans of Holy Ghost!’s hooks or !!!’s nu-disco vibes would like the feel on this one. Stream the track below or head on over to Incredible Change’s bandcamp page and purchase the single. You’ll need it for your next dance party / nostalgia playlist. Socks – “Forevermore”

Modesto, California-based indie rock act Socks, debuted their track via the world wide web last week and it has been stuck on repeat throughout our Labor Day weekend. “Forevermore” is all about the honey moon phase of a relationship. Nothing can go wrong and your heart is just melting constantly. Although the band is still in their infancy (playing together for only five months), the band has a forthcoming EP, expected to be out at some point in November. Fans of Mac Demarco, Summer Salt, or Pleistocene (for a local spin) will like the band’s sunny and sweet demeanor and knack for hooks. You’ll be singing along to notes you probably can’t hit, but that won’t stop you. Check it out. Super American Grows Up in New Video

One of our favorite pseudo pop bands, Super American, revealed yesterday their new single and video for “Sloppy Jazz.” The track is much what we have come to expect from lead singer Matt Cox’ holdings – literate story telling with a touch of “Wait, what? I don’t follow,” with a super hook. However, the band’s latest effort has distanced itself a  bit from the band’s earlier pop-punk leanings. There is much more of an alt-rock, indie pop vibe. Don’t worry, Super American still throws in their patented group chorus and duel vocals, which at this point they have seemed to master with the addition of Lovey’s Fred Cimatto and Pat Feeley. Shot by ex-All Blondes Go to Heaven drummer Andy DeLuca, the video cuts in and out of a high school dance-like photo opp all with a nineties tinge. “Sloppy Jazz” will be available for purchase on September 6th on Spotify and Apple[...]

Jouska – “Marcel”

Albany-based ghost rock quartet, Jouska, have slowly begun rotating into Buffalo’s local music scene. The band has an upcoming show on September 10th with Super American and Cooler in support of their yet-to-be released Topiary. “Marcel” is the lead single off of the album and a great first step into Jouska’s repertoire. “Marcel” is a highly introspective track where Jouska’s lead-singer Doug Dulgarian reflects on growing up around stifled creativity. The song comes off as a diary entry, with allusions to heartbreak and getting older. The experience is both depressing and rewarding. Life changes, and people move on. Fans of M. Ward or cryptic Brand New will enjoy Jouska’s latest. Topiary is set for release on September 6th, but you can peep “Marcel” below and catch their upcoming set at Nietzsche’s next weekend.

Bangbang – “Grabbed”

Southeast London electro-pop duo, Bangbang, released a real earworm earlier in the month with their track “Grabbed.”Bangbang is a fairly new project with its members originating from opposite sides of the world (Australia and southern England). “Grabbed” is the lead single off the pair’s self-titled EP, which you can stream over here. Under the surface, the track is about trying to take over a dream and control it, becoming fully lucid. Fans of Metronomy, Clubfeet, or NZCA Lines would be into this one. Jam out to “Grabbed” in the easily streamable link below. Gypsy & The Cat – “Tragedies Of A Love Song”

Melbourne, Australia dreamrock duo Gypsy & The Cat have an infectious new single that we can’t stop pumping on the office’s Bose Soundlink Mini™. The shoegazey track, “Tragedies Of A Love Song” is more in realm of an upbeat DIIV, The Drums, or Wild Nothing than the band’s grandiose-sounding indie pop ballads.  “Tragedies Of A Love Song” is on the duo’s new album Virtual Islands on . GOAT – “Saturdaze”

LA pop tag-team GOAT have been riding high since the release of their debut EP, Forty Love, which came out earlier this summer. The duo’s latest single “Saturdaze” is a funky retro jam about Saturday daydreamin’ bout ur #1 hunny that fans of Paula Abdul, Holy Ghost!, Great Good Fine OK, or O-Town would be into. Check it out below and try not to dance too hard.
