11 Acts to Catch at Trimania 2018

Trimania returns Saturday, April 14th for its every three year take over of the TriMain building.  The multi-faceted program is a hard dive into the local arts and music scenes, allowing the opportunity for the regional creatives to convey their art and the thousands of attendees to consume it. The event will almost overwhelm your senses, with artists, poets, musicians, and DJs performing in various rooms and  corners throughout the six stories of the building. With that, here are 11 musical performances we suggest checking out Saturday night. 8pm Hop Hop @ Insight International (Suite 556) Experimental hip hop artist Jaz Frasier performs under the moniker Hop Hop to deliver smart lyrics with abstract instrumentals Scratch by Hop Hop 9pm Little Cake @ First Floor Stage Avant garde multi-instrumentalist and front woman Little Cake dips her toe into a variety of genres and styles to produce an undoubtedly commanding performance.[...]

Tonight: Screaming Females

Buffalo is ablaze with excitement this evening for Weird Al Yankovic’s sold-out show at UB’s Center for the Arts, St. Bonaventure’s March Madness tournament chance, and rising punk act Screaming Females’ performance at Mohawk Place. Fronted by lead shredder/singer Marissa Paternoster’s distinct style of howl singing, the rising New Brunswick-based band has been a regular go-to on the indie scene, known for their raucous and commanding sets. Screaming Females are currently on tour of support of their latest album All at Once, which came out last month via Don Giovanni records. Also on the bill are power pop act Radiator Hospital and local punks Tina Panic Noise. Doors are at 8pm with a $17 cover. Bring earplugs.

Tonight: Candy Ambulance

Touring Saratoga Springs indie grunge act Candy Ambulance returns to Buffalo’s Mohawk Place tonight for a night jampacked with raw sounds. The band is coming through town in support of their latest LP titled Spray, which will appeal to fans of Screaming Females or Speedy Ortiz. Also on the bill are frantic rock act Passed Out and grunge act Nylon Otters. Doors are at 8pm with a $5 cover.

Tonight: Conor Oberst

After a bit of a prolonged local absence, Conor Oberst, sans his Bright Eyes moniker, will be returning to the Buffalo area tonight to perform within the acoustically rich walls of Babeville’s Asbury Hall. The Saddle Creek all-star has been touring in support of his latest record Salutations, the full band follow-up to last year’s bare bones Ruminations. The former reworked a number of the 2016 release’s tracks in addition to adding a handful of new songs to fill out the collection. Opening up for Oberst will be one of NPR’s current obsessions, the breakthrough folk singer Phoebe Bridgers. Tickets are still available to grab at the door for $30 or $35 dollars. Music is set to kick off at 8pm.

Tonight: Cheap Pop

Deep Space 8 is set to host Bethlehem, Pennsylvania’s most popular professional wrestling themed band, Cheap Pop, this evening. As an outspoken indie rock fan and a semi-closeted wrestling lover, it’s rare these two worlds collide on my interests Venn Diagram, but Cheap Pop manages to tick both boxes. For those of you that aren’t giant wrestling nerds, the term Cheap Pop is a wrestling term for when a good guy wrestler says/expresses something that is meant to get the crowd to cheer ie) talking about how great the Sabres are, or being happy to be back in BUFFALO, NY. Cheap Pop are no fair weather fans either. Their 2016 release In Gorilla (a production position at a wrestling event behind the curtain) is chock full of accessible punk rock tracks with insider references that will most likely go above the non-fan’s head, but will without a doubt be quirky and[...]

Digit n Kemp Release Defused via Dance & Rave

Darlington, UK house duo Digit n Kemp offer a trio of groove-laden house cuts on their latest Defused EP, the inaugural release for Buffalo based electronic label Dance & Rave. Ranging sonically from tech house to acid and more straightforward techno, the set of tracks provides near peak time jams with hefty percussion and vivid textures. The title track combines a fluid bass line with buoyant synth sounds, percussive vocal sampling that makes way for a hyper tense breakdown and buildup which allows the deep groove to burgeon. “Fallen Acid” again brings a deep atmosphere with an eccentric acid line and punchy drums, while “Ibiza70s” builds from a hypnotic synth groove and features a prominent vocal sample addressing history of the island of reference in the track’s title. Digit n Kemp are well versed in the types of immersive sounds and arrangement styles that make for dance floor weapons, their[...]

Soviet Dolls Release New Single

Soviet Dolls delivers us a taste of wholesome synth-pop with their track “Dreams.” The Rochester natives craft a sweet brew of alt-rock intensity with the synth-driven whimsy of indie-pop. It has a familiar feel, but manages to present a unique idea through stimulating production and captivating electronic elements. The group has built quite a name for themselves by sharing stages big names like The 1975, Joywave, and Broods. It seems only fair to assume this won’t be the last we hear of Soviet Dolls. Dreamland is set to play host for touring punkrockers No Parents for an undoubtably raucous Monday night. The Los Angeles-based act is touring in support of their new 7″ Chix in LA. You might have caught their set when they rode into town last fall sharing a bill with White Fang at Mohawk Place, or last spring when they opened for Bleached also at Mohawk Place.  Also on the bill are two fresh punk bands to the local scene MORBS and The Gennies. It’s an early one with doors at 7pm. There’s no advertised cover, but pack some extra Lincolns for the touring band and merch.
