1809 Studios Releases New Live Session feat. Secret Pizza

WNY is starting to become a hot bed for great live video sessions. If you follow this blog on a regular basis, you should already know about Buffalo’s Silo Sessions and Rochester’s Genesee Live, but how about 1809 Studios? Located just 20 mins outside of Rochester in Macedon, NY, the recording space has just begun to release its own installments of live clips, debuting just a couple months ago with Roz & the Rice Cakes. For its third installment, 1809 invited our favorite new 585-based act, Secret Pizza, in to film a live performance of the band’s fantastic, driving post-punk track, “Oh My My.” The clip was filmed/edited by studio engineer, Dave Drago, and Rochester singer/songwriter, Jon Lewis. Check it out below. For past installments of 1809 Sessions, visit the studio’s Youtube page.

Tiny Rhymes Perfoms “Arrows” at Buffalo’s Unitarian Universalist Church

Sometimes we miss out on material that we stumble across later and are shocked as to how it was not on our radar before. See Applennium’s amazing track we discovered 7 months after it was initially released. Same goes to say for this next one. Back in September, orchestral folk group, Tiny Rhymes, released a live clip of the song “Arrow” filmed in Buffalo’s Unitarian Universalist Church. The lush instrumentation and layered harmonies recall San Fermin, and may give Buffalo an answer to fellow WNYer Mikaela Davis. You can catch Tiny Rhymes at Mohawk Place this Friday, and in the mean time, watch the live performance of  “Arrows” below.

Lemuria Shares New Comic Book Paired Track

This week, one of Buffalo’s major music exports, Lemuria, debuted their new single titled “Foggy Smoke,” the B-side off a forthcoming 7-inch. The track is set to be paired with its own 40 page comic, Turnstile Comix #3: Lemuria, documenting the band’s eventful tour through Russia years back. With the band set to hit the road with Into It. Over It. later this month, this should be a nice to morsel to tide over Lemuria fans until the trio’s next proper release. Turnstile Comix #3: Lemuria, and the accompanying 7-inch, is set to be released on December 9th. In the mean time, listen to “Foggy Smoke” below.

Father John Misty – “Bored in the USA”

Ever since John Tillman stole the show while opening for Youth Lagoon a couple years ago at the Town Ballroom, I have been pining for some new music, and a proper follow up to 2012’s Fear Fun, from the former drummer of Fleet Foxes. Last night, Tillman’s alter ego of Father John Misty took over the Late Show with David Letterman stage with a massive string section to play the ballad, “Bored in the USA,” a cut from his forthcoming new album, I Love You, Honeybear. Tillman once again proves he is one of indie-rock’s best showman, frequently making himself comfortable on his piano as he casually laments on the dejected states of many of today’s post-grads and millennials, something the crowd seemed to eat up by the sounds of the laughter and applause. I Love You, Honeybear is set to drop on Tuesday, February 12th. FJM also announced some tour dates to[...]

Silo Sessions Debuts Latest Clip feat. Bryan Johnson

We like to check in with local video blog, Silo Sessions, every so often. Since mid summer, the site has been premiering a new session, filmed within the grain elevator walls, of mostly local musicians delivering stripped down performances on a weekly basis. The last few weeks have featured some great clips from Andrew Biggie, T.J. Borden, and Mink, to name a few. For the 20th installment of the series, Bryan Johnson, lead singer of Bryan Johnson & Family, performed selections from his band’s forthcoming EP, Cool Your Jets, set to drop next week via Admirable Traits. Watch the Bryan Johnson session below, and for past installments of the series, click here.

Nevergreens Releases Latest Cinematic EP, it’s already paradise

Local chillwave producer, Matthew Reilly aka Nevergreens, released his latest EP, it’s already paradise, this past weekend. The musician has been quietly dropping cinematic, instrumental scores on bandcamp since early summer. EP opener, “graduation,” is a jubilant track backed by warm synths and live drums, recalling some of M83’s more uplifting pieces from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. Stream the entire EP here, and check out “graduation” below.

Dreamers – “My Little Match”

No thanks to our current spooky season, I have been on a major found footage kick as of late with films like Afflicted, Wolf Creek, and in particular, the V/H/S series. The stories within a story, sort-of-anthology horror films have featured some truly disturbing video tapes of found footage hysteria, ranging alien abductions to zombie mountain bikers to the most fucked up cult I have ever seen. With a genre that is becoming increasingly played out, the films (a third was just released) have been a fun, and genuinely scary, watch. So I was happy to find the V/H/S inspired music video from surfy-grunge trio, Dreamers, in our inbox this morning. “My Little Match” is full of grainy clips of murders and other unexplained occurrences, plus a pretty clever use of a TV remote in the very V/H/S-type twist to finish. Its a fun watch right on time for Halloween. Watch the[...]

Baxter Roy Long Releases Acid-Folk Collection, Palms on the setting stone

Former Denver resident, Baxter Roy Long, recently moved to Buffalo, and upon settling in, released an 8-track collection of dreamy, yet challenging acid folk, titled Palms on the setting stone. While most of the album was recorded in the Pacific North West, the lone locally recorded song, “Whale calls at night,” may be the most ambient, sounding like early, ethereal Animal Collective or Young Prayer era Panda Bear. You can stream Palms on the setting stone in its entirety over at Long’s bandcamp page. Check out stand out, Collections of Colonies of Bees-esque, “March of Saginaw,” below.

Tonight: This Will Destroy You

The Tralf, of all places, has been the host to some pretty great post-rock shows over the last few years. From Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai (maybe the loudest show I have ever attended) to the brain crushing Swans shows this year and last, the Main Street venue is becoming one of the go-to spots for deafening, slow building, and you guessed it, epic instrumentals. The tradition continues this evening with San Marcos, TX outfit, This Will Destroy You. The band name itself is quite the threat to audience members’ ear drums. Since forming in 2005, the band has released a steady output of material with its most recent being this summer’s Another Language. Check out the album’s first devastating single, “Dustism,” below before heading down tonight. Doors open this evening at 7pm. Tickets are available at the door for $15. Furture Death and Silent Land Time Machine will[...]

Skirts Debut First Single From Semesters EP

Rochester garage-pop act, Skirts (formerly the dorm room outfit Meanagers), dropped the first single from its forthcoming EP, Semesters (Dadstache Records), early this afternoon. Led by a bouncy surf rock lick, “Pink Hair” features a peppy, playful melody and bursting guy/girl vocals from Hayden Ford and Brianna Battista. The single and new EP are follow ups to the great, basement session filmed by Genesee Live this past summer, which you can view here. Listen to “Pink Hair” below and keep an eye out for Semesters later this fall.

Spooky Stephen Drops “Boom Room” Session Mix

If you happened to be one of the many who attended our sold out Hamlin House Halloween Party this past weekend, you may have caught Spooky Stephen, one half of Buffalo party DJ duo, Spooky Business, keeping the party lively in between Soul Patch sets. The always busy DJ recently released a new mix cut at DJ Flo’s “Boom Room” studio in Brooklyn late last week, in addition to a fresh mashup on his SoundCloud page. With another round of Halloween parties going down this coming weekend, make sure to add Stephen’s mix to the docket of spooky soundtracks. Listen to the mix below, and catch Spooky Stephen on Saturday, November 1st at Epic along with Josh Yourmoms and MAXY NY.

Just Announced: Sam Roberts Band

Proof that Buffalo’s love of Canadian acts will never die, Montreal power pop outfit, Sam Roberts Band, is set top hold a two night stand at the Town Ballroom early next year on Friday, February 6th and Saturday, February 7th. Over the years, the band has played various Buffalo stomps, from Canalside to an in-store appearance at the dearly departed New World Records. Tickets will go on sale this Friday, October 31st, for $22 in advance, $25 day of. If you wish to hit up both nights, discount ticket packages will also be available for $32.

Anthony Del Plato Covers Stepfriends’ “Strangers, Friends, and Pictures”

Batavia musician and blog all-star, Anthony Del Plato, has long been teasing his forthcoming local covers album. This weekend, he released the first track that could be a part of the project, a cover of “Strangers, Friends, and Pictures” from emo revisionists, Stepfriends. The original has been floating around bandcamp for a few months now, and was formally released this past Tuesday as part of Stepfriends’ debut album, All We’ve Got. Del Plato delivers a lush and gripping interpretation, departing from the bursting pep of Stepfriends’ initial take. Listen to the original over at Stepfriends’ bandcamp page, and check out Del Plato’s cover below.

Damian Preps Remix Album, Releases Re-Worked “They Fill The Space They Believe In”

Earlier this year, local mumblecore artist, Damian Weber, released one of our favorite local releases in You Don’t Need It, which, as the year starts to near its completion, has the staff over at the blog already arguing over which track should make our year end, best of list. I personally am pulling for the title track… Regardless, over the past weekend, Weber released a re-working of one of the album’s many standout songs, “They Fill The Space They Believe In.” The song is the first leaked track of a complete remix album he plans to release soon, titled You Don’t Need Shit. The new take is layered with nervy guitar picking and warm, subtle keys, adding a dreamy quality to the already celestial slow-burning rocker. Listen to the original take on “They Fill The Space They Believe In” over at Damian’s bandcamp page, and check out the remixed version below.
