Tonight: Real Friends

Emo/pop-punk band Real Friends (not to be confused with Buffalo’s Real People) will be stopping through Buffalo tonight in support of their new album, Maybe This Place Is the Same and We’re Just Changing. Sad songs, mean songs, these Illinois-based guys do it all. RIYL the records Saves the Day, Brand New, or Taking Back Sunday were putting out a decade ago. Neck Deep, Cruel Hand, Have Mercy, and Cedar Kites will be opening the show tonight. You can still get $15 tickets if you hit up someone from Cedar Kites, otherwise the show is $17 at the door. Doors are at 6:00, 16+.

Tonight: Modern Baseball

The clever dudes in Modern Baseball seem to be riding high on a wave of interest in their awkward anti-pop musings about post-adolescence blues. It’s nothing short of endearing and relatable – see the startlingly frank acoustic musings about Twitter on “@chl03k” or the (somehow) nerdier version of Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin on tracks “Fine, Great.” Instagram and Twitter references aside, Modern Baseball songs are smart, relatable, and inherently infectious. RIYL The Front Bottoms, Tigers Jaw, or The Weakerthans. Opening this show is a veritable treasure trove of great underground emo. Knuckle Puck is classic pop-punk, but Somos, Foxing, and Crying each bring their own, excellent take on emo to the stage in different ways. Expect some sad, awkward, and conversely delightful chiptune from Crying, who we happened to catch up with earlier this week. Local support comes from Head North. Tickets for tonight are $15. Doors are at[...]

Tonight: Terror Pigeon

Tonight, Buffalo’s newest arts space, Dreamland, is going to be pulsating with weirdness and wildness when local art electronica giant Lesionread and ambient rockers Humble Braggers collide with Nashville’s Terror Pigeon and Halifax Nova Scotia’s Rich Aucion. The pushing of limits will be the order of the night, with all acts on the bill being noted for their sonic adventurousness, and with Dreamland being a space with no rules. It could truly be a night to remember, especially with regards to an unfettered Lesionread (aka Sean Louis), currently in a social media “beef” with Sleepy Hahas’ Pat Butler, who will be in the Dreamland audience. Will he be more than an audience member? Will this critique of the War On Drugs vs Mark Kozalek feud boil over? We’ll find out tonight. There’s a $5 cover and the show starts at 8pm. And here’s a salvo from Lesionread at Sleepy Hahas.[...]

Tonight: RL Grime

Well, the show sold out a few days prior to tonight and people were in a frenzy trying to find tickets. Waiting Room will be packed to the legal capacity brim for three heavy-hitting DJs. RL Grime is headlining the evening. With the WEDIDIT Collective, he kick started his career in the electronic realm. Further releases gained him recognition from Fool’s Gold, Ministry of Sound, Boiler Room and more. On tour for Void, his most recent album release, his track “Core” had people losing their minds after the first listen.   [soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/158827653″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]   Also playing will be Branchez and Tommy Kruise. Hailing from New York City, Branchez has become acclaimed for his productions and supported by names like Diplo and Skrillex as well as  touring with Zeds Dead, Paper Diamond and Giraffage. Tommy Kruise has been rising as a big talent within the pool of Quebecois[...]

Tonight: Organic James Brown Series Featuring Bernard “Pretty” Perdie

Tonight Duke’s Bohemian Groove Bar kicks off a series of shows dedicated to the sheer awesomeness of the late but still great Godfather of Soul, James Brown. A joint effort featuring the Allen Town bar, Alien Life Form Entertainment, and Critt’s Juke Joint, Organic James Brown: An American Funk Experience promises to be an ongoing 3 month exploration of funk and groove featuring world renowned masters of funk as Brownman Ali, Freakbass, and Parliament/Funkadelic vocalist Kim Manning. Joining them will be a band including some of Buffalo’s funkiest motherbleepers like Eric Crittenden, Zuri Appleby, Michael DiSanto, and DeRay Jackson, while the Motha Funkin’ Friday Crew makes sure the funk is flowing all night long. Legendary funk drummer Bernard “Pretty” Perdie gets the series started right with a veritable history of funk tonight starting at 8pm. This is an incredible opportunity to get to the heart of modern American music while[...]

Tonight: J.Phlip and Monty Luke

Dirtybird is not just a record label. The people that comprise dirtybird are your friends. Whether it is one of the dirtybird players performing solo, or all of them at their touring dirtybird BBQ, there is no doubt that you will have an experience. J.Phlip, the dirtybird duchess, returns to Buffalo again tonight. When not monikered she is known as Jessica Phillippe. Given her Chicago house influences from growing up in Champaign, Ill., the sounds of her sets and productions have a depth, complexity and smoothness to them, you might as well be drinking a well-aged scotch. J.Phlip has the ability to draw you in with sound and take you to another place. Don’t believe it? Just take a listen to her set closing down the Beatport stage at DEMF last year. Also on tour with her is Monty Luke. From Brooklyn, he made his way to the West Coast[...]

Tonight: Slingshot Dakota

I was lucky enough to catch a set from Topshelf Records’ Slingshot Dakota the last time they rolled through Buffalo at Sugar City. Singer Carly Comando had a wicked sore throat, but powered through an energetic set full bolstered solely by bouncy keyboards and drums. For lack of a better word, it was really punk. Luckily for us, the duo is back in Buffalo tonight supported by Real People (who also played last time they were here), Cross Stitch, and Red Heat. The show is $5, doors are at 6:00pm, music starts at 7:00pm, and it will be over by 10:00. Ask a punk if you don’t know where the Glitterbox is. Brass Pro and the Waterfront Revivalists Offer Try-Outs

Wanna join Brass Pro and the Waterfront Revivalists? They are having a “Try-out” PIZZA PARTY tonight  at 7:30pm at  at 1250 Niagara St. Are you asking yourself what Brass Pro and the Waterfront Revivalists are? Well, you can read the statement from the group below to find out the answers. In the words of the “walking rock band” themselves… “We have successfully played two gigs as a rag tag group and we are excited to keep this project going but we need members to really make a bang. If you are curious about joining or have a slight interest in how this group operates, please join us. It won’t be as much of an audition as a meet up to gain more members, talk about what our bands goals, what music we should cover, and what events we should crash. Bring an instrument if you have one. We know some possible rental opportunities and we have a few pieces of[...]

Tonight: The Irving Klaws

All Hallow’s Eve in Allentown… when the weird go pro and Halloween gets back to it’s primal roots, and there’s no better place to let your freak run wild than at the Nietzsche’s Halloween Party featuring local freaks The Irving Klaws, Small Smalls and ronaldraygun. Billed as a “freakshow tribute to music from the movies,” there is no way it’s not going to be bonkers (especially with the wonderfully sinful Irving Klaws involved), but if you throw in giveaways and a costume contest with a $100 prize, a bonkers time is guaranteed. $5 gets you in and the wildness jumps off from 10 PM.

Tonight: Pianos Become the Teeth

No costume? Abstaining from the spookiest of holidays? Well, you could probably still wear your costume to a show, but regardless, Pianos Become the Teeth are coming through Buffalo to provide a much-needed source of entertainment if you’re afraid of handing out candy on this rainy Halloween. In case you missed them last time they rolled around with Circa Survive, the post-hardcore band is back again, this time, hot of the release of their new LP,  Keep You. Tonight’s show is at The Tralf with support from ambient rockers Gates, fellow post-hardcore band Frameworks, and New Jersey’s Vasudeva. Doors are at 6:30 and it’s only $12 for a stacked lineup. Bring your kids if you want, it’s all ages too. Tonight: Keys N Krates

In the year 2008 in Toronto, Adam Tune, David Matisse, and Jr. Flo decided that they wanted to do something different. Live electronic music with their own style, the three perform with  turntables, keys, a synth, and drums  to re-create the trap genre as Keys N Krates. Elementally transformative, Keys N Krates establishes a show that is complex. The members have had recognition from major names, including the signing of their EP to major record label Dim Mak Records. With the release of their Every Nite EP in September, the group is on a 40-50 city tour, along with other impressive names in the game. Keys N Krates will hit Buffalo tonight, hosted by MNM Presents, at Town Ballroom. Tonight: Soul Butchers

It’s going to get hella weird tonight at Nietzsche’s when some of Buffalo’s (and beyond) more out there bands – Soul Butchers, Bike Cops, and Supergoner – unleash some high octane pre Halloween wildness. There’s something delightfully skeevy, dangerous, and wrong about Soul Butchers, whose 18 Wheeler EP makes for excellent reckless driving music, while Chicago  thrashers, Bike Cops, and 90’s rockers, Supergoner, will round things out with more music from the wrong side of the tracks. Doors open at 9pm and expect a modest cover.

Tonight: Merchandise

Big night of indie rock tonight at the Buffalo Iron Works  when Tampa post punkers, Merchandise, and Copenhagen’s Lower play that excellent Cobblestone district stage. 4AD Records buzz band are on tour in support of the well received After The End, an ambitious arena rocker, released this past August, that ought to translate well in Iron Works’ excellent brick performance space, while Danish noise rockers Lower will continue to make inroads with American audiences in support of their current Matador Records release, Seek Warmer Climes. Tickets are still available at the door for $14 and doors open at 7:00 PM.

Tonight: Hardware Pop-Up Party

Tryna dance and get weird? Get to the back room of Allen Street Hardware tonight for a pop-up party featuring sets from Buffalo’s finest and mind-fucking visuals from Malt Disney.
